A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer tool that helps people make and study maps. It collects and organizes information about places, like weather, roads, and populations, and shows them in layers on a map. One way GIS is used is to create thematic maps, which focus on a specific topic, like population growth, pollution levels, or natural disasters. For example, scientists use GIS to track wildfires, and city planners use it to design better roads. By layering different types of data, GIS helps people see patterns and make smart decisions about the environment, cities, and communities.
Today, we will use a "GIS-like" tool of Google Sheets to develop a basic thematic map. You are tasked to create a thematic map involving countries from around the world (see the rubric below).
As you know, there are endless number of themes to use in making a thematic map. Possible themes for your map could be one of the following for your countries:
Average Income Olympic Medals Animal Populations Average Temperature Literacy Rates
Birth Rates Life Expectancy Minimum Wage Computers per Household
There is an unlimited amount of themes that you can choose to create your thematic map. You can even choose the states of the U.S. rather than countries.
