I am extremely pleased to be working with you this school year. I will do my utmost to make this an enjoyable and educationally successful year for each student. My educational philosophy is to challenge each student to accomplish more than they thought they were capable of doing. This will be done through presenting students with a wide variety of materials and activities to teach them not only the curriculum, but also problem solving and information access skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. I am also very aware of the need for students to feel supported emotionally and I will do my absolute best to work with parents to ensure the emotional well-being of all students that I work with.
I have a bachelors in Liberal Studies with a minor in Spanish and a Masters in Teaching. This year is the start of my nineteenth year teaching sixth grade in the Corona Norco Unified School District with all but one year as an A track teacher at Harada Elementary. When A track was going to change to only dual language immersion teaching positions a couple of years ago, I decided to complete the exams required to earn my certificate to teach DLI and I am very glad I did so. Teaching DLI, and continuing to work in a grade level I love has been very challenging, but also extremely rewarding. Most recently, I completed the examinations required to become a level 1 & 2 Google Certified Educator and am also working on completing numerous learning pathways through Microsoft Educator Center. I feel it is very important that as an educator I continue to stay current with the latest teaching strategies so that I can reach all students.
I have lived my entire life in Southern California and have lived most of my adult life in Norco with my husband and two daughters. We have an expectant mare, a colt, a goat, and a potbelly pig that thinks she is a dog.
In my free time, I enjoy hosting backyard gatherings with family and friends and now that my family is fully vaccinated, I look forward to safely returning to doing so. I also enjoy sewing, and though I am always learning, three years ago, I was able to make the skirts and blouses for all the girls in my class for Fiestas Patrias with the help of my good friend, Mrs. Frey.
Students need to take responsibility for their learning and ask for help when they need it. In a remote learning environment they may need to attend office hours or send a message to me, but at school, students need to also take the initiative to raise their hand and ask questions.
Students will be held accountable for their own work. At the elementary level, grades are the way educators communicate with parents about how students are doing. If students are not completing their work, or not putting in effort into the assignments they turn in, their grades will be impacted.
Students need to show integrity so that their work reflects what they know, not what someone else knows. Additionally, they need to speak honestly so that solutions to problems can be found quickly.
Sixth grade students are the leaders on an elementary school campus. As leaders, they need to make sure to set a good example in the classroom, on the playground, and online.
Students need to practice safe behavior and should expect the same of those they interact with. Students that are participating in unsafe behavior online, or on campus, should understand that consequences may be applied.
Remind-Sign up information for Remind will be sent home with all students in the class on the first day of school. Please make sure to add yourself to the group so that you are included in classroom communication. If possible, please include your child's name after your name when you sign up. (example: Joe Smith- Sue's Dad)
Email-On occasion, communication is sent out using the mass email system connected to Parent Connect. Please make sure that the email addresses and phone numbers enter in Parent Connect are kept current.
