Majors at Glasgow

Major academic areas available at the University of Glasgow

Biology

Classes are 7 credits each (or 30 Scotcat Credits) and offer short list of options each semester. The Functional Anatomy course is worth 5 credits and is only open to international students.

Business

Fall Semester:

Equivalents for business core classes BUSN 300 and BUSN 304 are often taught. Students can take MGMT 310 for the Management Major or Leadership minor. If a students has taken major classes, there may be options to take upper level course within the major.

Spring Semester:

Equivalents for business core classes BUSN 311, BUSN 323 and BUSN 305 are often taught. If a students has taken major classes, there may be options to take upper level course within the major.

Note for pre-business students: There are not many pre-business courses available either semester. In the fall semester, we have seen business law available.

Classical Studies

There are a variety of courses available each semester for major or minors in this subject.

Economics

There are two departments for Economics at the university. Students have taken classes in either area.

English

There are three literature departments and a English language department. Students can take classes in English, Scottish or Comparative literature. It is not as common to find writing concentration courses, but on occasion these are offered.

Fine Arts

The Art History department regularly offers courses for fine arts students. If any studio art classes are taken, there will be an additional fee, because these are taken at the Glasgow School of Art.

History

Students can take up to two history classes for HIST 395 credit. Often, the area is European, but on occasion there will be an American history or other area history offered.

Mathematics

Spring only - students may be able to take upper level math courses in the spring. The fall is not an option for math due to courses being an entire year long.

Philosophy & Religious Studies

There are academic options for both majors at Glasgow.

Physics

Courses are available in Physics, but it is advised to meet to learn more about the course offerings before applying to the program.

Political Science

Students can take courses in political science. Specific courses may not be available until arrival to Scotland, but upper level courses will be offered.

Psychology

Students take 300 level electives for the major. It is less likely to find specific 300 level courses and 400 level lab courses will not be available. Psychology majors and minors have often taken their three 300 level courses elective requirements while in Glasgow.

Sociology

The sociology department offers upper level courses each semester.

Theater

There is a theater department, but most students have taken lower level courses. It is less likely to find 300 or 400 level courses.

Anthropology

Students can take the Sociology electives for the major, but should not plan to take any anthropology credits.

Communication Studies

University of Glasgow does not have a communication department. Once in a while, we will have a COMM course from a different department, but we recommend contacting the study abroad office to learn about programs that fit better academically for you.

Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Cyber Security

University of Glasgow does not have a cyber or engineering department. We have had Computer Science students study for a semester abroad, when they are able to attend without taking any CS courses that semester. There is a CS department, but it is not advised to take courses due to the teaching methodology and academic yearlong courses.


Criminology

Students can take the Sociology electives for the major, but should not plan to take any criminology credits.

Environmental Studies

University of Glasgow does not have an environmental studies department. We recommend contacting the study abroad office to learn about programs that fit better academically for you.


Language Majors

Although we have sent language majors to this program, we recommend speaking with the study abroad office to discuss all your options. This may work if you are double-majored in another subject area or can work on your minor.

Leadership

The fall semester offers a management course equivalent to MGMT 310 for the leadership major. There is no leadership department, so students would not be able to take any leadership in the spring semester or one course in the fall.

Music

Although there is a department for Music, the courses are not open to visiting students. Please contact the study abroad office to learn about alternate options.

Neuroscience

There is no neuroscience department, but students could take courses in psychology or biology. We recommend speaking to the study abroad office to learn about options with neuroscience courses.
