MUSIC

MS Music Course Options 

The CNG Middle School believes that all students should participate and perform in a music course. This school year, all students will select one of the following band or choir options for their schedule. 

Please note: 

• All students are required to perform in a band or choir.

• Band or choir have no piano, guitar, or bass options. Students will be able to choose a new instrument that is similar to one of those in the band. (Ex. mallet percussion is similar to piano)  

• Percussion (drums, mallets, auxiliary drums) is offered in Band class, however, students will have to audition and/or have a discussion with the teacher about playing those instruments. 

CHOIR

Choir Grade 6:

This is a performance class for students singing for the first time or for those that have sung in a choir. It is an exciting, energetic class that focuses on the fundamentals of music, the changing voice, part singing, and vocal technique all while having fun singing together. Students will rehearse in large and small groups, and perform a variety of music including world music, a cappella, classical, pop, or rock. Come ready to sing, create, explore, and grow together in music. This class will perform one or two times throughout the semester.

Choir Grade 7 & 8:

This is a performance class for students singing for the first time or for those that sing but have not been in choir. It is an exciting, energetic class that focuses on the fundamentals of music, the changing voice, part singing, and vocal technique all while having fun singing together. Students will rehearse in large and small groups, and perform a variety of music including world music, a cappella, classical, pop, or rock. Come ready to sing, create, explore, and grow together in music. This class will perform one or two times throughout the semester.

Advanced Choir Grade 7 & 8 (Prerequisite one year of choir or teacher recommendation):

This is a performing class for more advanced singers. In this class students will learn more challenging music and music concepts with a focus on higher level performing. Students will continue working on music fundamentals, vocal technique, and ensemble skills all in an inclusive and welcoming community. Students will rehearse in large and small groups, and perform a variety of music including world music, a cappella, classical, pop, or rock. This class will perform many times throughout the year, have the opportunity to travel, and perform around Bogota.  

BAND

Beginning Band Grade 6th 

This is a performance class for students who want to start an instrument for the first time. In this class we learn about music reading, music vocabulary, listen to a variety of music, and perform. The class will focus on instrument technique and having fun while playing together. Students will rehearse in large and small groups, and perform a variety of music. Students who want to learn to play: flute, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, percussion, and other symphonic band instruments should join this class. Come ready to play, create, explore, and grow together in music. 

Concert Band Grade 6  (Prerequisite one year of band or teacher recommendation):

This is a performance class for students who are more advanced band players. In this class students will play more challenging music and focus on performing at a high level. We will study music theory, history, and composition. Students will rehearse in both large and small groups and perform a variety of music including pop, jazz, classical, or rock. Students who want to continue or learn to play: flute, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, percussion, other symphonic band instruments, or other band instruments should join this class. Come ready to play, create, explore, and grow together in music. 

Beginning Band Grade 7th and 8th 

This is a performance class for students who want to start an instrument for the first time or have not played an instrument for a few years. In this class we learn about music reading, music vocabulary, listen to a variety of music, and perform. The class will focus on instrument technique and having fun while playing together. Students will rehearse in large and small groups, and perform a variety of music including pop, jazz, classical, or rock. Students who want to continue or learn to play: flute, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, percussion, and other symphonic band instruments should join this class. Come ready to play, create, explore, and grow together in music. 

Varsity Band Grade 7th and 8th

(Prerequisite one year of band or teacher recommendation):

This class is for band students who want to be more advanced players and find community within their class time at CNG. Band is both a class and club. In band students will play more challenging music and focus on performing at a higher level. Students will rehearse music that they select, work in small groups, and play as a large band. Students get the chance to work with professional visiting artists, play different instruments, and be involved in a variety of different activities. Students who want to continue or learn to play: flute, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, percussion, other symphonic band instruments, or other band instruments should join this class. Come ready to play, create, explore, and grow together in music.
