Hi, Fabulous Fifth Graders!
It is that time of year to choose, research, create a slide show presentation, and present the information you learn about your favorite Decade! As a former 5th grade teacher, this was one of my very favorite fun projects! You will be using your Social Studies Specials time over the next 2 weeks to continue working on your class Decades Day project.
-You will be using the information, directions and rubric your classroom Social Studies teachers have already provided for you.
-I have attached the links for the directions/ rubric and and the Example Slide show below. (These are the same as what your teachers are expecting.)
- I have also added a document with a list of safe research sites below.
- When you complete your projects and share with your teacher, please share it with me also "can comment" or "can edit". My email is: erical.brown@cms.k12.nc.us
- The project is due in approximately 2 weeks (May 15th) and your teachers will be setting up Zoom presentation times with you. I am hoping to join in as many of these as I can to see what great things you learn and come up with!
** Please remember to ADD ALL GROUP MEMBER NAMES on the TITLE PAGE of your slide show - so teachers viewing can see who contributed to each presentation.
Thank you for all of your hard work and initiative in this project! Happy learning and have fun! - Ms. Brown :)

History of Memorial Day:
Originally Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day, meant to honor the Union and the Confederate soldiers who died during the American Civil War. By the 1900s it had become a day to celebrate all American soldiers who died while serving in the military. It wasn't until 1967 that it was legally named Memorial Day.
On Tuesday, June 2nd throughout the day, Connect Team will be hosting Zoom meetings with each grade level. Please check emails from classroom teachers for your Zoom ID and passwords to join the meeting. The classes and times are listed below. I know this year didn't end the way we thought it would. I loved teaching Social Studies this year and learning how to be a global citizen with you. Remember as a student of Matthews Elementary School, the community of Matthews, and a citizen of the United States of America and the world you have rights and responsibilities.
