As an IB requirement 8th grade students are required to complete the IB Community Project, in order to maintain their magnet seat for the following school year (high school). Through this experience, students reflect on areas of interest that are in need of support within our school community. Through research, direct/ indirect service, or advocacy, students make a difference in our world.
8th Grade - Year-Long Community Project
In the community project, students should be able to:
Objective A: Investigating - Journal Entry 1 - GRADED
1. Define a goal to address a need within a community, based on personal interests
2. Identify prior learning and subject-specific knowledge relevant to the project
3. Demonstrate research skills
Objective B: Planning - Journal Entries 2, 3, & 4 - GRADED
1. Develop a proposal for action to serve the needs of the community
2. Plan and record the development process of the project
3. Demonstrate self-management skills
Objective C: Taking Action - Journal Entries 5, 6, & 7 - GRADED
1. Demonstrate service as action as a result of the project
2. Demonstrate thinking skills
3. Demonstrate communication and social skills
Objective D: Reflection - Journal Entries 8, 9, & 10 - GRADED
1. Evaluate the quality of the community project
2. Reflect on how completing the project has extended their knowledge and understanding of service learning
3. Reflect on their development of Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills

WORK INDIVIDUALLY (NOT AS A GROUP)

A. No, the Community Project can be completed in a broader community (with adult supervision).
The project could be done in the student's neighborhood, place of worship, or abroad.

A. No worries. This is probably the first time students have an assignment on this scale.

Collect money for any charity.
SPORTS are NOT a Community Service
Clubs are NOT a Community Service
(unless the members are going off-site to help another agency ex. homeless shelter)
No religious-based projects
No political-based projects
No Drives at school (ex. book drives, pet supplies, homeless supplies)
(your box will have to be in your neighborhood, church, etc...not at school)
Always check with an agency BEFORE organizing a drive
(grade counts as a Social Studies Project rehearse grade)

Feedback Scores 1, 2, 3, & 4 = FINAL GRADE
