Section 504 of the Rehab Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination based on disability. It was reauthorized as the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) of 2008, which extends the prohibition against discrimination to the full range of state and local government agencies (including public schools), programs, or activities that receive federal funding. Through Section 504, your student may be eligible to receive instructional, behavioral, or health accommodations to ensure that he or she has equal access to the public school experience. Accommodations are based on individual student needs. Section 504 plans are not designed to enhance a student's educational experience by undue advantage, but to remove any barriers impeding his or her access to education.
