Guidance lessons are an integral part of the elementary school counseling program and important to every student’s academic success. One of the most effective ways for school counselors to help prevent academic problems is by discussing self-esteem issues such as peer relationships, stress, or dealing with feelings and emotions in large group guidance lessons in the classroom. The lessons are preventative in nature, designed to reach all students, and are taught in the classroom regularly by the counselor.

In 1st grade students learned strategies to deal with and recognize bullying. Each week a continuing story is presented in each lesson as Mrs. Grasshopper, the teacher, helps the children learn how Brenda Bee and Anthony Ant learned to deal with the bully, Big Beetle. The students participate in role-play using puppets they make from a puppet pattern acting out ways to handle difficult bullying situations. Music is also used to reinforce their learning of strategies by suing reproducible lyric sheets and singing different verses to a familiar tune during lessons. s, Mrs. Grasshopper, the teacher, helps children learn how Brenda Bee and Anthony Ant learned to deal with the bully, Big Beetle.
