It should be a fun day for our Eagles to close out the 2023-24 school year. Students will be able to go to the field with their class to enjoy many fun activities like Ninja Nation’s mobile obstacle course, Now It’s a Party bounce houses, and more. Kona Ice will serve snow cones as a fun treat. Your student will bring home a bright pink permission slip. Parents will need to complete BOTH the permission slip and an online waiver required by Ninja Nation (link to online waiver: https://bit.ly/JJWaiver ) and return to your student’s teacher by June 3.

Good afternoon!
I have a request that I need your help with!
Every year on the mornings of our EOG's the third grade team likes to do classroom snacks/breakfast for the students to ensure that each child has something nutritious in their bellies before having to sit and take their test! I will be sending out a Sign Up Genius on Friday for those of you who want to bring in snacks. (5/24 and 5/29). We also like to do a small treat both afternoons for the students to get a break, go outside, and celebrate being done!
We would need 3 to 4 people per morning to send in enough for the class (18 students). Remember we are a nut and sesame free classroom and any food that is to be cut should either be cut at school our bought in individual pre cut packages
Some ideas for snacks for the mornings are:
-string cheese
-granola bars
-mini muffin packs
-yogurt sticks
-sliced fruit
- anything else you can think of that would work!
We probably just need one volunteer per afternoon to provide enough of one treat for the class
Some ideas for afternoon treats are:
-popsicles
-ice cream sandwiches
-little ice cream cups
-freezy pops
-?? any other ideas
Please let me know if you all have any questions.
Thanks so much,
Katie Day

Message from CMS
Dear Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Families, Guardians, and Caregivers:
All students and members of our school communities deserve to feel safe, welcomed, and included. It is on all of us to work together to prevent firearm violence and to avoid the harm and tragedy that shootings of any kind can cause in the spaces in which we live, learn, work, and play. Safe firearm storage is one of many preventative actions that you can take in keeping our school community and school buildings and grounds safe. When firearms are stored safely, it can help prevent them from getting into the hands of children and teens, who may use them to, intentionally or unintentionally, harm themselves or others. Safe storage can go a long way in preventing lives from being lost or permanently altered. If you have firearms in your home or if your child spends time in a space where firearms are present, there are important steps that can be taken to keep firearms secured and out of reach of unintended users. Firearm-Related Injuries and Deaths: A Problem We Must Solve Together Firearm-related injuries and deaths are a public health crisis that communities across the nation face every day: • Since 2018, there have been more than 100 school shooting incidents per year in our country and those numbers have steadily increased. i • Approximately three-quarters of perpetrators in school-based active shooter situations acquired their firearm from the home of a parent or close relative.ii This illustrates the close connection between your role as families, caregivers, and guardians and the role of CMS in keeping students safe while on school grounds. • However, this issue goes beyond school-based active shooter situations and includes a variety of firearm injury types, including interpersonal violence, suicide, and unintentional fatal and nonfatal firearm injuries.iii • More than 4 million children live in a household with at least one unlocked and loaded firearm.iv Studies have found that households with both locked firearms and locked ammunition have significantly lower risks of self-inflicted firearm injuries and even lower risks of unintentional firearm injuries among children and teens compared to households that did not safely store firearms.v Safe Firearm Storage: Actions to Take to Keep Our Communities Safe Safe firearm storage can help prevent and minimize the risk of firearm-related deaths and injuries. Everyone, both firearm owners and non-owners, has a role to play in building awareness of safe, responsible firearm storage. Below are simple, highly effective practices that can help to reduce firearm-related incidents in our community and help protect our kids. In addition to these practices, it is important to also engage children and adolescents in conversations about the dangers associated with using firearms and what to do and not do in the event they access a firearm, to prevent fatal or non-fatal injurie
Panorama Survey- April 30th
Dear Sharon Families,
We thank you and your family for being our valued partners as we work together to educate the children in our school this year. We value input from our community and we need to hear from your child(ren)! They are important partners as we work to improve their overall experience and support their needs.
In order to learn more about student experiences, we will be asking for your child’s feedback via an online survey. The survey shouldn’t take more than 20-30 minutes to complete.
We are asking that all of our students participate in the surveys, as their feedback will provide invaluable insights into their experiences and how to improve and adapt our school to their needs. If a student doesn’t feel like they have enough information to answer a question, they will be able to skip the item altogether. The survey content will ask students to self reflect on their own social emotional learning skills, like self-management and self-efficacy.
We thank you in advance for your support. If you have any questions about the survey administration, please don’t hesitate to contact the counselors, Deanna Powell and Grace Cascone.

It is an opportunity to show me and the other 3rd grade teachers and administration what they already know and what we may need to go over again. Please have students at school rested and ready, we will begin soon after the bell rings at 8:00. If you have any questions or concerns please message or email me!

Audience Etiquette for School Performances
Mr. Hood, Ms. Escalante and Ms. Gaines are excited to share 2 upcoming musicals with Sharon School. 3rd grade will be performing Go Fish and Encore Ensemble will be performing Lion King Jr Kids! In order for our performers to feel encouraged on stage, it is important for audience members to have great audience etiquette during performances.
In order for grade level classes to be invited to see the upcoming productions, students must show proper behavior in their classes at Sharon Elementary and during Special Area Classes. If a student or class is struggling with behavior, they may not be invited to attend the performance. Mr. Hood and Ms. Escalante will review audience etiquette with all classes at Sharon so they understand expectations both in the classroom and during performances.
Here are 3 things to remember:
Stay seated on your bottom so friends behind can see.
Do not talk. Your attention should be on the performers.
Clap at appropriate times. If you aren't sure, wait for the adults around you to clap first.

Costumes from Mr. Hood
Hello Parents of Talented Performers!
March 21st is the day of our 3rd grade show. You should have received details about the show by now, but if you should have any questions please reach out to me (bradleyp.hood@cms.k12.nc.us) or check out our website here.
For the show, we would like for you to try to provide a costume for your performer. It does not have to be extravagant, and can be either bought or made. If you have not already, please look at the costume notes on the show website for your child's role. If they do not have a specific role, they will be listed as "ensemble" and have options as far as which animal to dress as. If you have trouble acquiring a costume, or if you are unable to please reach out to me.

Hi Parents,
Classes will not go outside for recess unless the temperature is above 32 degrees this winter. Please write your children's names on the tags in their coats, scarves, and hats. We'll need the children to wear sweatshirts and warm clothing in the event that it takes a while in the mornings for the rooms to warm up on the days when the weather is extremely cold. Thank you.

End-of-Grade Testing (EOGs)
End-of-Grade testing is for students in grades 3 through 5. All students in North Carolina (including students with disabilities and students identified as English Learners) are required to participate in the testing program per state and federal requirements. To date, North Carolina does not allow any student to opt out of required testing unless there are extenuating circumstances, primarily related to serious health conditions. The EOG testing window is assigned by the state and takes place during the last ten days of school. The Beginning-of-Grade (BOG) state reading assessment will be administered to third-grade students at the beginning of their third-grade year.
EOG testing will take place during the ten days of school beginning May 24, 2024. Please plan accordingly.

Beginning of Grade Testing (BOG's):
This is a state mandated test that will see where your child is with reading and will be given WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 6th. The state uses these scores to show growth for the End of Grade tests (EOG).
