Week of October 21-25
Hi Families!
This past week was a lot of fun! Students used their imaginations and drew and made toys from recycled materials. We had a great week with Project Energy, and our trip to Hodge’s Farm! Thank you to all our Parent Chaperones for making our field trip a huge success! We learned about insects, pollinators and the important role they have on the farm, jumped on hay bales, had a wagon ride around the farm, saw many farm animals (a 850 lb. pig ) and picked out pumpkins!
Please come out this Sunday for the PTA-Family Fun Event at 2:00-4:00pm outside in back of the school on the field.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will start this week. If you have not signed up, please do so. Click here: https://signup.com/go/nattEJi
The Sharon Book Fair begins the week of October 21st and will feature a wide variety of wonderful children's books from Scholastic. This is a great opportunity to build up your personal libraries. Our class will visit the book fair and shop on Tuesday, October 22nd at 12:45 PM. I highly encourage parents to join their children if you can! It is hard for students this young to understand how much something is, and how much money they have. Some students also like to pick books just because it has a 'toy' with it (like a Lego man, piece of jewelry etc.) or they like to pick out pens, posters etc. and it is helpful if a parent is right there to help them make those decisions. If your child is book shopping without you, plan to send in your child's spending money in an envelope or Ziploc bag, labeled with his/her name and how much is included. Please keep in mind there is sales tax. You may also cut out and send in pictures of things from the flyer if there are specific books you would like for them to get. We appreciate your support of the Sharon Book Fair and hope you use this opportunity to purchase books for your child's personal library!
Students may dress up on Friday as a Storybook Character. If possible, please also send them with a book showing the character. This is a great opportunity to show creativity. Students are not expected to go out and buy a costume. For example-Pete the Cat: dress in blue and make a headband with cat ears, Fancy Nancy: Wear bows and a dress. Masks, swords, lightsabers, or other weapon toys are not allowed.
Our Fall Party is on Friday! Thank you to our Room Parents for coordinating our volunteers and preparing a fun party for our class! We will have games, a fall craft, and a special snack provided by the PTA. If you have not joined the PTA at Sharon-please do so-it is wonderful and teachers appreciate all they do for our students and our school!
UPCOMING DATES
October 22nd- Book Fair at 12:45 pm
October 25th- Storytelling Festival 8:00-8:45 and Fall Party 12-1pm

Week of Oct. 14-18
Hi Parents!
Students LOVED meeting Gus the Bus on Friday! They were very surprised when he talked and knew something about each of them! Tomorrow is picture day! These are individual pictures.
Our Field Trip to Hodge’s Farm is on Friday! Please apply sunscreen and insect repellent at home. We are not able to apply it at school. Students should dress for the weather. We will not be taking coats because they tend to get left behind. We have received our class shirts and I will send them home on Thursday. Please wear a long sleeve shirt under it if the weather is chilly on Friday. Students will need to bring a disposable bag lunch unless you emailed me that your child needed one from the cafeteria. (These are the students that signed up for a cafeteria lunch- Alana, Jeronimo, Nova, Angel ) Please email me by Monday if your child needs a cafeteria lunch. All items must be disposable. Please do not include fruit juices or other items that attract bees since we are eating outside at the farm. We will leave school around 9:15 a.m. We will eat lunch at the farm upon arrival. Children will pick a small pumpkin to bring home. We will return to school around 1:00 -1:15 p.m. Thank you to our Chaperones!
*Many students are returning their class Book Baggies weekly-if you have not done so yet-please ensure they are reading all the books multiple times and record students reading on their yellow reading log. You may record all reading, not just the books in the baggies.
UPDATES AND REMINDERS
Last Tuesday, October 8th, your child brought home his/her mid-quarter Progress Report. This is a general overview of how well your child is participating and succeeding in our kindergarten curriculum. Please sign the Progress Report and return it if you have not done so. You will keep the white copy, and just send back the yellow copy after you have reviewed it. There are 5 levels that will be included on each progress report and report card. Let me explain them! Grades are based on end of year expectations, so you will be seeing mostly "D's" for Developing due to having just introduced most of our topics. The November Report Card will be much more specific in each category.
D means developing. This means your child is just starting to grasp the concept or they have just been introduced to it.
P means progressing and this means your child is understanding the concept and is well on their way to end of year expectations.
M means Mastery and this means your child has met the end of year expectation for that skill.
E means exemplary and that means your child is above grade level and is on the level that they should be during that time of year in first grade.
N/I means I have not taught that skill yet, so we have not had proper testing to assess their level.
Storytelling Festival- It's not too early to start planning your child's costume for our annual Storytelling Festival, scheduled for Friday, October 25th in the morning. This is a fun event where we encourage the students to come to school dressed as their favorite storybook character, and bring along their favorite storybook to match! (This is not associated with Halloween costumes) We'll share our books with each other, discuss story characters and settings, and have fun guessing who we are all dressed up as. Please do not let your child bring in any toy weapons, light sabers, or anything associated with superhero fighting. I'm looking for Pink-a-licious, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Curious George, Pete the Cat, Flat Stanley, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, etc. Also, please make sure that your child is able to easily go to the bathroom while in costume, and feel free to pack an extra change of clothing for later. We are excited to have a few parents dress up and read to us as well! That same afternoon, the students will enjoy a Fall Party hosted by our Sharon PTA and our wonderful Room Parents. It's a fun day for everyone!
It is now October and that means families are welcome to come eat with their child if they want! If you would like to eat lunch with your child, please start your visit in the office to sign in and meet us up in the lobby on our way to lunch at 10:20. You are welcome to sit at our empty table with your child. We ask for 'quick goodbyes' at the end of lunch to avoid tears on our way to recess! (You know best if your child is emotionally ready for another morning goodbye) Please let me know if/when you plan to attend lunch . Also tell me if it is a surprise, so I don't spoil the special event. Thank you!
We also have "Father Fridays" this year! Dads are invited to come eat with their child any day of the week, but especially on a Friday(s)!
I will be holding on to your child's purple field trip shirt until the day before our farm field trip. It will come home this Thursday.
UPCOMING DATES

October 16th- In house field trip about Natural Energy by Duke Power
October 18th- Pumpkin Patch field trip

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
We have started "Secret Student" in our social emotional learning time! We play this every Wednesday. How it works, is I will randomly select a student but not tell students who it is. I will give them 3 clues to try and guess the secret student (the clues may be related to something they are wearing, the table they sit at, how they get home, syllables or letters in their name, or other widely known facts about the student). After we guess who it is, we pick 4-5 students to ask them a question they want to learn about their friend (favorite food, restaurant, show, movie, letter land character, game, etc.) Students LOVE playing this, ask your child about it on Wednesdays!!
We will continue unit 2 in math which is on counting/ writing numbers 0-10 and comparing numbers/objects with "more, fewer, and the same number".
In literacy we have started our last unit in our first module of Toys and Play. This unit is on comparing and contrasting old toys and new toys. We will read Have Fun, Molly Lou Melon which is a book about a girl who used her imagination and invents toys but has a friend who has store bought toys. We will practice story elements (characters, setting, describing how characters change etc.) with this book.
Our interactive read aloud is Pumpkin Jack. We will practice discussing and writing our comprehension skills: predicting, describing characters and setting, making a connection and retelling the story.
We will do a deep dive on letters Cc and Nn this week.
We will learn all about pumpkins this week. Monday we will finish up with our Five Senses. On Tuesday we will switch to Social Studies- Geography. We will be learning about maps.
Have a great week,
Mrs. Parkey
Week of October 7-11
Hi Families,
Students will be taking the new iReady Assessments for Reading and Math on Tuesday and Thursday this week. Please make sure they are rested and have a good breakfast. No other preparation is needed. These assessments allow them to show what they know and what they are ready to learn. They will take this assessment 2 more times during the school year.
Thank you to the Cooke family that sent in the LCD Writing Tablets for our class Amazon Wishlist that will be fun to use in small literacy groups in writing words. Also thank you to whomever (no name was in the box) sent in the magnetic writing board that will be great to use this week for demonstrating how to write the letters and the morning message! Thank you so much!
*Quarter 1 Progress Reports will come home this Tuesday. Progress Reports along with Report Cards are based on an entire year of curriculum. Students are typically scored Developing at the beginning of the year.
*Please read and record book titles onto the yellow card located in students’ Book Baggies. Students should read the books with you multiple times and answer the comprehension questions. Students will bring the baggies to school once a week to exchange for new books and will shop in the Treasure Box each time they fill up both sides of their Reading Log.
*Students will have a Bus evacuation drill on Wednesday. We will learn how to exit the bus safely in case of an emergency.
*Gus the Bus will visit Sharon on Friday. He is a talking bus that teaches children about bus safety. He has been around since I was in elementary school at Beverly Woods Elementary.
*Our Field Trip to Hodge’s Farm is coming up Oct. 18th! Please apply sunscreen and insect repellent at home. We are not able to apply it at school. Students should dress for the weather. We will not be taking coats because they tend to get left behind. We have received our class shirts and I will send them home the day before. Please wear them over a long-sleeved shirt if the weather is going to be cool. Students will need to bring a disposable bag lunch or pre-order one from the cafeteria. All items must be disposable. Please do not include fruit juices or other items that attract bees since we are eating outside at the farm. We will leave school around 9:15 a.m. We will eat lunch at the farm upon arrival, rotate through stations to learn about pollinators, the life cycle of plants, take a wagon ride around the farm, learn about farm animals, and pick a small pumpkin to bring home. We will return to school around 1:00p.m. If your child will need a cafeteria lunch please email me. So far I have Angel, Nova, and Jeronimo.
Parent/Teacher conferences sign up will be sent out this week through an email.

Hi Parents!
I hope everyone is having a nice weekend! Fall is around the corner! Last week was our first full week of kindergarten and everyone did a great job in learning the rules and procedures of the classroom and school. On Tuesdays our student teacher Alexis Widener from UNCC will be coming to observe and to work with students through December. She will be working just 5 hours per week in the classroom learning to be a teacher. Welcome Ms. Widener!
Thank you to the families that have purchased items from my amazon Wishlist for our classroom! A thank you note came home:) Thank you to whomever sent in the Number Blocks Puzzles a name was not included!
Are you interested in helping in the classroom this school year? That could include reading during our storytelling festival in October, helping at our class parties, chaperoning a field trip, coming to be a mystery reader for our class, helping with field day or June Jamboree and so much more! If so, you cannot come in if you are not a cleared volunteer. If you would like to gain clearance or remain an active volunteer for the 2024-2025 school year, go to https://www.cmsk12.org/Page/3550 keep in mind this needs to be completed each year even if you have done it in the past. Please let me know if you do this as I have to turn in names to our school secretary to be sure you have been cleared. Thanks so much!
Please mark your calendar for Curriculum Update on September 25th from 3:00-3:30! This is over Teams Zoom. You will learn more about what your child will learn in Kindergarten. (September 25th is an Early Release Day where students will be leaving at 11:40am)

Please flag this email for future reference because it contains important information and links you will need throughout the school year. Let me know if you need me to add or delete any parent/guardian emails for ongoing communications.
I will send this also through Parent Square but I wasn't sure who has not signed up for it yet.
-Blue Nametags: Please send your child in for the first couple of weeks wearing the blue Nametags that are in the blue folder with Child's name, K-(Insert Teacher Name) & PM(Car, PM Bus #, JCC, Providence Prep, or ASEP). Please submit all same day transportation changes online before 1:45 pm to notify the front office. Also let your child and me know. I appreciate being notified, however when our day begins, I may not have an opportunity to check texts or emails, so the online form is very important. Please let me know if your child has a peanut allergy, egg allergy, etc. Remind your child that we do not ever share our food at school because it may make some children sick.
-Bathroom: We follow a schedule and will go as a class throughout the day. Please speak with your child and have them always try to use the bathroom when it is our scheduled time to avoid accidents. Students need to be able to use the bathroom without assistance.
-Snack: Students will need to bring in a labeled healthy snack each day. Practice opening and closing items at home. We will have our bottled water with a snack. Please do not send juice, sport drinks, or soda for snack because it gets our floors and tables sticky when spills occur.
-Lunch: Students may bring a labeled lunch or buy lunch from the cafeteria. Please add money to your child’s PayPams account for the cafeteria. Kindergarten students will not purchase ice cream due to eating so early in the morning. School Menu is in this link- https://www.cmsk12.org/Page/9928

Children should exit on the passenger side of the car for their safety. If your child needs more time exiting the car, you may pull up to additional parking spaces at the end of the carpool line.
Dismissal- Use the afternoon carpool sign and place it in your window with your child’s first and last name and grade level written large and with a dark marker. We will have extras at the school if needed. Carpool will begin at 2:50 PM. (Early Release Days will begin at-11:50 AM).

Transportation Services in CMS:
Transportation Services takes great pride in providing reliable and safe transportation services to students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
Led by Executive Director Adam Johnson, CMS Transportation employs over 1,201 staff members who work tirelessly to support students' safe and efficient transportation in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The CMS transportation service area is vast, with 14 operation area offices, including an entire turn-key maintenance division, a safety and training operation, a routing and scheduling division, and central office support staff. The Transportation department maintains a fleet of nearly 1,120 buses—CMS Transportation Call Center (980)-343-6715 or transportation@cms.k12.nc.us.
· Sharon Elementary is assigned to the Myers Park Transportation Department (980)-343-5808. Bus assignments, routes, and drivers are managed through the CMS Transportation Department, not Sharon Elementary.
· Parents, please ensure you have applied for bus transportation for the 2024-2025 school year. Applying for an AM and PM stop is best. To request bus transportation for your child, please click here: Transportation for 2024-2025
If your child will be riding the school bus this year, you should sign up for two critical accounts: Here Comes the Bus App and AlphaRoute. Schools will no longer have bus labels to send home to families. You will need to check AlphaRoute to access your child's bus information.
Here Comes the Bus App
Families with children who ride school buses can use a free bus tracking system. The app allows families to download and access the real-time location of their child's bus on a map and scheduled and actual arrival times at their assigned stop and school.
The CMS Transportation Website (linked) provides directions to sign up for the Here Comes the Bus App.
The app will not track the substitute buses for families.
Here Comes the Bus Hotline: 844-854-9316.
AlphaRoute Portal Account
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools now uses AlphaRoute to process transportation requests. To use the platform, parents must create an account that allows them to submit requests and keeps them informed about the status of their requests via email or text message—whichever communication method they prefer.
Directions to sign up for an AlphaRoute Account can be found on the CMS Transportation Website (linked).
If you have questions about AlphaPortal, contact CMS Transportation at (980) 343-6715.
STUDENT IDs:
It will be essential to maintain your child's Student ID number. This number is assigned to your child from kindergarten through 12th grade.
Where Can I Find My Child's Student ID?
Child's Student ID through Parent Square.
In the Parent Square App, click "Students."
Then click your child's name.
At the top, under your child's name, click "Dashboard."
Then click "Overview" to access your child's Student ID.
Students in grades 2-5 may have their Student ID memorized, which is used to log into devices at school; ask your child if they know their Student ID.
Student report cards contain Student IDs in the top right corner.
You can contact the school office for more help if needed. 980-343-6725.
