Did you know that as School Counselor I am responsible for teaching a curriculum just like a classroom teacher does?
School Counselors design and deliver comprehensive school counseling programs that promote student achievement. These programs are comprehensive in scope, preventive in design and developmental in nature. A comprehensive school counseling program is an integral component of the school’s academic mission. Comprehensive school counseling programs, driven by student data and based on standards in cognitive, career and socio-emotional development, promote and enhance the learning process for all students (NCDPI).
This year ALL CMS students will participate in equitable Caring School Community - Social Emotional Learning Programs. This is exciting for me as a School Counselor to see great work supporting student SEL needs!

At Piedmont I teach the students in various ways:
Classroom Guidance - When I go into a class and deliver a lesson on Academic, Career, and Personal/Emotional /Social topics.
My lessons are tailored to the needs of the students in their classes.
Assemblies - I present topics that are pertinent to issues that touch middle school aged youth.
Every fall I invite a guest speaker from the FBI. We learn about internet safety and cyber-bullying.
Advisory - The counselors write lessons targeted at Academic, Career and Social/Emotional education.
These lessons are taught to the entire school once a month on a grade level basis.
I participate as teaching partner with our CSC SEL curicullum.
Small Groups - Sometimes it is necessary to meet with students in smaller groups.
This year I am working with groups on organization, grief and academic success. In addition, I have drop in sessions called Delaney's Zoom Room.
Digital Classrooms - Meeting with students as groups using technological platforms.
I am using the platforms FlipGrid and Remind. I am work with students on long term goal setting projects using these digital tools.
Did you know that the proper term for my role is School Counselor? We have not used the term guidance counselor for over a decade as guidance is just one facet of what we do. Did you know that I am responsible for teaching staff ways to support students academically, career-wise and on a personal/social/emotional level? Each month I give professional development to Piedmont staff. I have also served as a Lead Counselor for the district where I provided mentor-ship, and ongoing Professional Development.
