Welcome to First Grade!!!!
My name is Veronica D. Smith, and I will be your child’s First Grade teacher at J.H. Gunn Elementary in Room C-9. This is my sixteenth-year teaching Elementary Education. I’ve earned my Bachelors & Master of Science Degree in Elementary Education from The Alabama State University. I am thrilled to be your child’s teacher for the upcoming 2021-2022 school term.
First grade is a very crucial, yet exciting grade. Your child will learn the skills that will be important for his/her entire school career. The subjects taught in first grade are EL Curriculum, Math, Science and Social Studies. In order for your child to reach his/her fullest potential, the learning must not stop after your child leaves school. It is very important to your child’s development that the skills taught in the classroom are reinforced at home by you with your child.
As we embark on this school year, I would like to say thank you for giving me the honor of instructing your child this year. I am excited to work hand in hand with you so that we can have super fantastic fun school year!

Literacy: Unit 1 - Tools and Work Your child will begin to study the topic of tools and work with a focus on learning about tools and the jobs they do. The learning will be focused on these ideas:
Tools make our lives easier by helping us do work.
There are different types of tools for different types of work.
Your child will also practice these reading foundation skills:
Identify and write the sound for most consonants and vowels
Segment (break apart) the individual sounds of spoken, one-syllable words, and blend them back together
Decode (read) and encode (write) regularly spelled, one-syllable words
Math: Topic 7 - Extend the Counting Sequence
Social Studies Understand the Importance of Rules
Science - Essential Question: What are science tools and how do we use them to discover and learn?
I love to read books from my favorite authors- Eric Carle, Audrey Penn, Wilson Rawls, Fred Gipson, Gene Zion, Debbie Herman, Ezra Jack Keats and Dr. Seuss. During the year, I like to help students find authors they like and have author studies and Book talks. It's so much fun to share and read our stories to each other.
Two of my favorite books I love to read to my class are
The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn and The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle. I hope you get a chance to read them with your family!
Read these two books and the discuss the moral of the story. The both teach a very important life lesson.
Here is a wonderful site for you and your child to find and read books from a wonderful storybook collection. https://www.storylineonline.net/
