IB MYP

J.M. Alexander offers the IB Middle Years Program (MYP). What do children experience in the MYP?

A Balanced Curriculum that includes world language, technology, physical education, and the fine arts each year. Students study French or Spanish. Fine arts options include band, chorus, dance, drama, orchestra and visual art.

A unique curriculum framework that organizes children’s learning around key concepts and global contexts. The framework encourages connections between subjects, fosters inquiry, and offers scholars opportunities to explore real-life issues.

Inquiry units that emphasize critical thinking, analysis, reflection, and the development of independent research skills. Open-ended learning experiences such as investigations, debates, hands-on experimentation, and student-driven projects are common.

Meaningful assessment: Scholars are assessed through a wide-variety of authentic tasks, including essays, projects, performances, labs, investigations and presentations.

Service as Action: MYP scholars participate in service learning inside and outside of school. 8th Graders complete the MYP Community Project.

Approaches to Learning: Scholars in the MYP develop a range of approaches to learning in all courses. Skills emphasized include research, communication, self-management, collaboration, and thinking skills.
