WHAT is AVID?
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is a college/career readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll and attend four-year colleges and universities. At Harding University High School, we are committed to exposing students to new opportunities and equipping them to be successful in a global society. The AVID program challenges students with a rigorous curriculum and researched methodologies that promote academic and personal success. As each student strives to accomplish his/her goals, AVID serves as a support system of encouragement, accountability, and sustainability.
Who does AVID serve?
The AVID Program is designed to accommodate students in the academic middle. The academic middle students are profiled as often having difficulty reaching or being aware of his/her maximum potential. The following criteria is taken into consideration when students apply for the AVID program:
- 2.0 – 3.5 Grade Point Average (GPA)
- Average to High State Test Scores
- Attendance
- Desire and Determination
- First in Family to Attend College
- Economically Disadvantaged
As students apply for the AVID program, all acceptance criteria is taken into consideration and is not limited to the aforementioned. Specific criteria does not disqualify students from being accepted into the AVID program.
What do we do in AVID?
Research & Apply for college
Students in the AVID program will research colleges/universities to identify application criteria, as well as the requirements for any programs of study offered by the college/university.
Visit College Campuses
Students will be afforded the opportunity to visit colleges/universities virtually, locally, and within the state of North Carolina.
Prepare for a Professional Career
The AVID program will provide students with the opportunity to explore different career paths. Students will not only complete a Career Interest Survey, but they will also actively research careers of interest, as well as attend Career Fairs.
Interact with Guest Speakers
AVID features various Guest Speakers to help students broaden their perspective; encouraging them to be inquisitive, as well as increase their depth of knowledge.
Participate in community service
The AVID program helps to develop student character by providing opportunities to give back through community service. It is essential that we serve our community and build mutual partnerships in order to increase the value within the communities in which we live.
Learning with Tutors
As an academic support, tutors volunteer to assist students within their academic studies. The tutors are trained to facilitate the AVID tutorials helping students identify and correct their points of confusions.
Learn AVIDized Strategies
Students learn researched strategies and methodologies such as WICOR which promotes their academic success. WICOR stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading.
