What is World History?
This course is designed to be a historical study of societies, nations, economies, events, and cultures of the many regions of the world, providing historical background for each area and details inclusive of change over time, historical impact, religion, diplomacy, culture practices and beliefs, and economic, political, and social institutions.
Standard World History students who typically perform well in the class...
¨ commit 20-30 minutes per night (typically, not always) reading, taking notes and reviewing content for the next day
¨ come to class prepared to participate in class discussion with teacher guidance
¨ take an active part in the learning process and benefit from the increased flexibility with the pace (pick up / slow down as needed)
¨ occasionally need teacher assistance to initiate group discussions in class
Honors World History meets the same expectations as Standard AND…
¨ understand the course requires them to work at a faster pace and learn the material in greater depth
¨ accept a greater expectation to seek out addition help outside of class when needed without teacher prompting
¨ focus more intently to synthesize complex ideas and concepts about causation and the overall historical process.
¨ take an active part of leading the class discussion and activities within the classroom setting and experience
Standard World History & Honors World History sample test questions:
Standard Ex.: 1. Identify the major causes of the “New Imperialism.”
Honors Ex.: 1. To what extent were the ideologies of the 19th century responsible for the “New Imperialism?”
Note: both questions are very similar in terms of the overall concept it is evaluating from the student. However, the Honors questions require students to synthesize the information within the answer as well as how it may apply to content previously discussed within the class.
