This course is the pre-requisite course for the Carpentry pathway. This course includes basic safety, construction math, introduction to hand and power tools, reading construction drawings, material handling, basic communication skills, basic employability skills, and green building processes. Successful completion of this course can yield National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) credentials.
This course covers the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Core certification modules required for all of the NCCER curriculum-area programs. This course helps prepare students for additional National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Core certification that are part of the Carpentry Pathway here at Independence. Key topics studied in this class include Basic Safety, Introduction to Construction Math, Introduction to Hand Tools, Introduction to Power Tools, Construction Drawings, Basic Communication Skills, and Basic Employability Skills. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include apprenticeship, cooperative education, internship, and job shadowing. SkillsUSA competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences.
