School Counselors work with stakeholders to remove barriers to education. They focus on the social/emotional well-being of students by providing short-term, solution-focused individual counseling as well as group counseling and guidance lessons based on student needs. All counselors are licensed, Master's level professionals.
For more information & FAQ's, please see CMS' Middle School Counseling website here.
School Counselors also strive to run a comprehensive school counseling program as an integral component of the school's mission. Comprehensive school counseling programs, driven by student data and based on the ASCA's National Model, are delivered to all students in a systematic fashion. See more about the ASCA School Counseling Model here.
School Psychologists are mental health specialists who have advanced graduate degrees with training in both psychology and education. The preparation focuses on child development, the psychology of learning and behavior, curriculum and instruction, and skills in mental health and educational interventions. School psychologists are licensed by the North Carolina Department of Instruction and some may be recognized by the National Association of School Psychologists as Nationally Certified School Psychologists (NCSP).
School Social Workers promote academic achievement by supporting and linking students and families with school based services and community resources which will enhance total student development. School social workers advocate for the best needs of the student at home, school and in the community. They provide McKinney Vento Services for students in transition who need transportation and other services enabling school continuity. School social workers also provide individual and group counseling, and work to assist with attendance, drop out prevention, as well as crisis intervention and management.
Please note that Student Services staff adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines meaning that information shared by students remains confidential and is not shared with parents, school staff, or others without consent. The exception to this guideline is if the child states that they are hurting themselves, hurting someone else, or someone is hurting them.
