The CMRU-KSCST Intellectual Property (IP) Cell, in collaboration with the CMRU-Centre for Skill Development, successfully organized a One-Day Certificate Course on “IP and Its Role in the Business and Creative Ecosystem” on 12th April 2025. Held at the Auditorium on the OMBR Campus, the program was an initiative under CMRU’s continuing efforts to bridge the gap between legal theory and practical application. The course was exclusively attended by students of the School of Legal Studies, CMR University, providing them with a focused opportunity to explore intellectual property from a multidisciplinary and real-world perspective.
The event commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. V.J. Praneshwaran, Director of the School of Legal Studies, who set the tone by emphasizing the growing intersection of law, business, and creativity in the digital era. He noted that IP literacy is not just a legal necessity but a strategic tool in today’s innovation-driven economy.
The certificate course was thoughtfully curated to offer a blend of conceptual clarity and applied learning. It focused on the practical relevance of IP rights in business strategy, branding, content creation, and commercial negotiations. The sessions were designed to instil critical thinking and application-based understanding among law students.
The sole speaker and facilitator for the day, Ms. Nishvitha, an experienced legal practitioner specializing in intellectual property law, delivered four deeply insightful and interactive sessions.

The CMR University School of Legal Studies in association with Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology, Bengaluru and Refry and Sagar (IP law firm) conducted a “Workshop on Challenges and Opportunities in Intellectual Property Rights” on 22nd November, 2023 at CMRU OMBR Campus at Bangalore. The inaugural of the seminar marked the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding between CMR University and the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology. The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Dr. U.T. Vijay, Executive Secretary, Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology, Dr. Sarasija Padmanabhan, Consultant KSCST, Patent Agent & WIPO Tutor, Neha Srivastava, Partner, Remfry and Sagar along with Dr. Praveen R, Registrar of CMR University and Prof.(Dr.) T.R Subramanya, Dean, School of Legal Studies, CMR University, Bengaluru. The event included two sessions. The first session consisted of the inauguration of the event and renewal of MoU between CMRU and KSCST including an inspiring and thought-provoking address by Dr. U.T.Vijay. The second session related to challenges and opportunities in intellectual property rights included interesting talks by Dr. Sarasija Padmanabhan and Neha Srivastava who addressed the key aspects of IP awareness and related challenges.

The Seminar commenced with the welcome address by Prof.(Dr.) T.R. Subramanya, Dean SOLS extending a warm welcome to the distinguished guests. In his opening remarks, he expressed appreciation for the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) and emphasized the pressing need for the dissemination of knowledge related to Intellectual Property Rights in the contemporary era .He invited Dr. U.T. Vijay, the Executive Secretary of Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology and Dr. Praveen R, Registrar of CMR University to sign the MoU.

Dr. Vijay spoke about different kinds of IP filings and its importance in protecting the same for effective commercialization. He encouraged students to apply for the internships at Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology and motivated them to learn IPR.

She spoke about different forms of IPR and techniques behind patent commercialization. She conducted surprise quiz to the students during her lecture and made the lecture more interesting and engaging. She gave a clear understanding about the difference between patent agent and patent attorney and the qualifications regarding the same.

The CMR University School of Legal Studies in association with Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology, Bengaluru conducted a “One Day National Seminar on Recent Trends in IPR” on 01st September, 2023 at CMRU OMBR Campus at Bangalore. This Seminar marked a momentous occasion as esteemed dignitaries graced the dais, bringing together an assembly of knowledge, experience, and vision in the pursuit of Recent Trends in the field of IPR. The distinguished assembly on the dais featured notable dignitaries including Dr. U.T. Vijay, the Executive Secretary of Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology; Prof. (Dr.) T. Ramakrishna, Chair Professor, IPR at National Law School of India University, Bengaluru; Dr. Brinda Varma, Patent Agent and Legal Consultant, IPTel, IISc, Bangalore; Mr. M. G. Kodandaram, IRS (Retd); Ms. Sangeetha Murali, Senior Assistant Professor of Law, Ramaiah College of Law, Bengaluru; Mr. Nagarjun M.G, Project Associate, Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology; and Mr. H. Hemanth Kumar, Chief Scientific Officer at Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology; were all graced by the esteemed presence of the college's Dean Prof. (Dr.) T. R Subramanya and Pro-Chancellor Prof. Subbareddy.
The inaugural address was delivered by Dr. U.T. Vijay, the Executive Secretary of the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology. He highlighted the paramount importance of comprehending Intellectual Property Rights for law students. He articulated IPR as an important and emerging facet of contemporary life. He also shared insights into India's position in the Global Innovation Index, showcasing the country's progress in the field of innovation.
Prof. (Dr.) T. Ramakrishna, Chair Professor, IPR at National Law School of India University, delivered the keynote address, where he underscored his deep concern regarding Intellectual Property protection and placed a strong emphasis on the necessity of applied research. He elucidated the challenges involved in drafting IP applications, highlighting the importance of an IP cell that extends its support beyond traditional boundaries, actively assisting individuals with creative, innovative ideas and unique products.
Dr. Brinda Varma's presentation provided invaluable insights into the intricacies of patent application drafting. With a focus on key criteria - Novelty, Non-obviousness, and Industrial Application; she illuminated the essential prerequisites for a product to qualify for patent rights. Furthermore, she skillfully differentiated between discovery and invention, emphasizing that discoveries, though significant, are not patentable, while true inventions merit patent protection. Dr. Verma went on to elucidate the rules governing patent laws, offering guidance on how to navigate and comprehend their intricacies effectively. Her presentation provided a practical application of these principles, enabling the audience to grasp the practical aspects of patent application drafting with greater clarity and insight.
Mr. M. G. Kodandaram delivered an insightful discourse that delved into the intricate relationship between IPR and cyber crimes. He began by underlining the alarming growth of cybercrimes, emphasizing their fundamental differences from traditional real-world crimes. In his address, he spotlighted the widening gap between cyber laws and the theft of intellectual property, a gap that poses significant challenges. Mr. Kodandaram also acknowledged that in a landscape where legal remedies fall short in countering contemporary crimes, technology must step in as a temporary solution, though not a permanent one. His speech shed light on the complex intersection of technology, law, and intellectual property, raising important questions about the evolving nature of cybercrimes and the need for adaptive and innovative responses in the realm of IPR protection.
Ms. Sangeetha Murali, a distinguished Senior Assistant Professor of Law at Ramaiah College of Law, delivered an insightful presentation on the intricate subject of safeguarding plants, plant varieties, and agriculture within the realm of IPR.
Mr. Nagarjun M.G, Project Associate at the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology, delivered a comprehensive speech on the subject of laws related to industrial product design. His presentation was enriched with numerous real-life examples and compelling case studies that illustrated the practical implications of the laws discussed. During his speech, Mr. Nagarjun delved into the legal frameworks governing innovations in design and their registration, offering valuable insights into the intricacies of this area. He also elucidated the fundamental prerequisites for design registration, providing clarity on the essential criteria. Furthermore, Mr. Nagarjun explored the India Innovation Index framework, shedding light on its significance and relevance within the context of industrial product design. His informative and engaging speech left the audience with a deeper understanding of the legal aspects surrounding design innovation and its role in fostering innovation in India.

Hemanth Kumar, Chief Scientific Officer at the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology, highlighted the crucial roles played by patent agents and patent attorneys in facilitating the IPR process, recognizing their significance in safeguarding intellectual property. Furthermore, he stressed the need for increased government funding in support of IPR-related initiatives, recognizing the pivotal role it plays in fostering innovation and knowledge protection. Mr. Kumar also highlighted the crucial roles played by patent agents and patent attorneys in facilitating the IPR process, recognizing their significance in safeguarding intellectual property. The CMRU-KSCST IP cell organized a guest lecture on 15TH November, 2022. Dr. Kayan C. was invited as the speaker who delivered a lecture on the topic ‘IP as a Career Prospect- 2022’. Dr. Kalyan leads a team of highly qualified, experienced and accomplished patent, trademark and copyright attorneys and agents.
The speaker began with sharing his experience in the IP field and then conducting a poll to find out the number of students interested in IP as a career. He highlighted on the status of intellectual property in the legal world. IP means the protection of ideas in a person’s mind. Intellectual property involves specific statutes combined with certain protection of common law.
From a career point of view, the speaker spoke about the various aspects of intellectual property. He mentioned that it can be approached in a general sense or one can choose specific stream. The speaker further proceeded to provide a detailed understanding of six different streams of career aspects relevant to Intellectual properties. Firstly, as a copyright/ trademark or patent lawyer, secondly as an IP lawyer from business perspective, thirdly as an IP manager and technological manager from university context, fourthly as an IP lawyer on technology aspect, where one can specialize in technology patent, fifthly pertaining to entertainment law which is a promising option and finally, sports law form, which is an excellent area and has IP in its core.
The speaker emphasized on different options which IP can provide for career prospects. Primarily as IP Counselor who explains clients how to make money, secondly filing and prosecution, thirdly litigation where cases filed regarding IP aren’t that high and only about 10% of cases go for full trial, fourthly celebrity rights which has grown significantly and finally auditing, i.e., for checking if all files and processes are in order. He opined the current era as Golden era for IP.
The speaker by referring to the landmark judgements discussed various matter related to IP. For example copyright matter - Kantara and Thaikkudam bridge case, trademark matter - Fresheys Vs. Hersheys case (double identity test), Design Infringement - Peps Vs Travel Blue case, creative commons, and patent filed by Stephen L Thaler, in which he was personally involved in.
The guest lecture was fruitful and our students enhanced their knowledge regard to building of career in IP field.

IP AWARENESS PROGRAMME

As a part of extension to IP awareness Programme, in collaboration with the CMRU Legal Services Clinic our CMRU KSCST IP Cell coordinators visited two villages and schools in Chinthamani Taluk, Kolar District, Karnataka. With the prime motive to create a global form of awareness in the minds of young growing children and among rural people we extended our Intellectual Property awareness programme for government schools and rural areas.
We visited two schools in the Kolar district, namely the New India English school situated in Chintamani and Kuruburu High School. The awareness was enhanced to school children in different ways, such as, through distribution of pamphlets and posters, by exhibiting different products to get a clarity on Intellectual properties, performance of the roleplay on varied forms of IP and chart-based presentations in local language. The awareness programme emphasized on IP Rights also. We also highlighted on patents and copyrights specifically to create a more interest in the young minds pertaining to new inventions. This programme provided with first layer information of intellectual property. They got to know the basics involved in IPR and how IPR tools such as Patents, Copyrights, Industrial Designs, Trademarks and Trade Secrets, Integrated circuits can be used to protect diverse features of effective commercialization of products. The response of the children and teachers was positive at both the schools. More than 150 students and 20 teachers were oriented.
Further, as a part of awareness programme we visited the houses in those villages, met people and discussed about their local TK and GI matters. Either way the participants gained a good experience and knowledge from this visit.
The purpose and outcome of the IP Cell Awareness programme was successful. It exposed the students to various types of IPR which has ignited their intellectual property thoughts and motivated them to innovate and further transform their innovative ideas into intellectual property assets.

CMR University, School of Legal Studies, KSCST-IP cell celebrated its Annual day on 14th May, 2022. The event was presided over by the Chief guest of the event Brinda K Verma advocate, IP consultant and IP tech IISC Bengaluru, Hon’ble Dean, Professor Dr. T R Subramanya and Director V J Praneshwaran, CMR School of Legal Studies. The event was hosted by Harshita Raj, a student of 4th year B.B.A., LLB. The auspicious began with taking the blessings from almighty followed by the lightening of the lamp by the dignitaries. Mr. Adish Kulkarni student of 5th year B.A.LLB., delivered the welcome speech followed by displaying of the journey of IP cell from 2020-to 2022 through video by Adarsh Kumar, 3rd Year B.Com LLB student.
Further, the Chief guest of the event Brinda K Verma advocate, IP consultant and IP tech IISC Bengaluru, addressed the gathering regarding importance of Patents in the recent times and how initiative can be taken to do further research on the said field. Further, the event succeeded by speech of our Hon’ble Dean, Professor Dr. T R Subramanya. The main section of event was introducing newsletter of CELL- Lex Artis, 2022 which consist of various articles about different domains of intellectual property, latest development in IP, etc.
The letter was released by the dignitaries present in the event after which our Director V J Praneshwaran appreciated the events the conducted by the cell from September, 2020 and encouraged the participants for their active participation. Ms. Mariya, a 2nd Year student of BBA.LLB read the annual report that contained information regarding events, lectures, competitions conducted by the cell.
Next, the event was followed by prize distribution ceremony where the dignitaries distributed the prize to the winners of Poster Making competition, Cross-word Puzzle competition, quiz competition and exhibition conducted by the Cell. Finally, the event was concluded by vote of thanks delivered by IP Cell Faculty Coordinator, Professor, Vidya M N.

The CMRU KSCST IP Cell had organized two day IP Exhibition on 13th & 14th May 2022. It was an Inter-class competition. Totally 15 teams participated in the IP exhibition. Mr. Vijay Singh and Ms. Shruthi from IP tech, IISC Bengaluru judged the competition. The VI semester LL.B team stood as winners and VIII semester B.B.A., LL.B(Hons) team stood as Runners. The event was a grant success. All the participants showed their creative talents through this event. More than 250 to 300 students & faculties viewed the event.

The MC of the webinar was Mariya Biju Thattil of 2nd year BBA., LL.B(Hons). Mr. Adhish Kulkarni of 5th year BA., LL.B(Hons) delivered the welcome speech. Harshitha Raj gave vote of thanks. More than 90 participants attended the session.
Dr. Asif began his talk with the quote ‘IPR have important role to play in evolving technologies and their development – statute and laws’. He dealt with the last 20 years huge transformation into technologies, especially the Frontier Technologies and its classifications such as Digital and Physical Technologies. WIPO supports the IP and Frontier Technologies.
Through his talk participants are enlightened with the basic info of AI as the simulation of human intelligence process by machines, how the AI works and its impact in normal daily life, how does the AI impact the World IP and its progress such as Google Home devices, Alexa, Siri etc., classification of AI into two types - the Weak AI and the Strong AI, the working of AI – learning, reasoning and self-corrections.
The Speaker viewed that with AI the work distribution is faster which affects drastically in the near future as it will be found in almost every sector. The speaker stated that Indian laws in relation to IP laws are restrictive to AI. He believes that the commercialization of AI is inevitable (AI in Health Care, Agriculture Sector, Education system). The speaker concluded by stating that development of IP laws should and will be done keeping AI in mind.

VIRTUAL GUEST LECTURE ON TRADEMARK AND GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Independence, the Government of India has begun a mission to spread awareness on IPR among faculty students under the scheme – National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM). As a part of this mission, CMRU KSCST IP Cell had organized a webinar on Trademark and Geographical Indication on 13th of April, 2022.
The webinar had been a comprehensive dialogue, with detailed description of the concepts in the trademark and G. I. arena. The webinar was kick started with a brief explanation of the different Intellectual Properties, with the typical illustration of how a single Apple MacBook holds various IPRs. The discussion was taken ahead details of each IPR, expounding on the meaning, the essentials and the duration of protection along with various real-life examples from past and the present. Trademark was dealt with in great detail, wherein its functions and importance and how there are 45 classes for different goods and services and other intricacies of TM had been stated. Additionally, there had also been a detailed explanation about the Geographical Indication, regard to the nature of goods which can receive GI tags with appropriate illustrations of the various GI.
The session has been a highly knowledgeable one, supplementing to the student’s as well as the faculty’s awareness.

[Inter-class Online Quiz Competition]
The CMRU KSCST IP Cell organized an intra-class IP quiz competition on 11th January, 2022. Around 100 students [IX semester B.A., LL.B(Hons) & B.B.A., LL.B(Hons) and V semester LL.B] participated in the competition.
The quiz was organized during the class hours. The quiz was conducted through online with the help of Google Form. The quiz consisted of total 15 MCQ questions carrying of 2 marks each. And the students were asked to fill in the google form within the allotted time.

PRACTICAL ASPECTS AND CHALLENGES RELATED TO INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY REGISTRATION IN INDIA

For the month of December CMRU-KSCST IP cell had organized a special Guest lecture. The event was presided over by Dr. T.R.Subramanya Dean CMR SOLS, Dr. V.J.Praneshwaran Director CMR SOLS and other faculty members.
Mr. Sanjay Sethiya delivered an insightful guest lecture on the topic Practical aspects and challenges related to Intellectual Property registration in India.
The Guest Lecture was highly informative and knowledge enriching. Various nuances of the IPR registration in India were covered by the Guest speaker. Sir gave a practical understanding of the topic to the students. Mr. Sanjay began by explaining the basic concepts of IP and went on to highlight the benefits and modes of protection received after Intellectual property is successfully registered. He then explained the provisions of law relating to registration in simple manner and throwed light on how there are overlapping provisions in different IP laws. He made a mention of many judicial decisions made by Indian Judiciary in this aspect.
The lecture not only covered the theoretical aspects of the IP registration but also involved the practical intricacies of the subject. As being a IP practicing Advocate gave many real-life examples from his experience which made the students understand the topic better.
The lecture was received with admiration by the students of IX semester B.B.A., LL.B., (Hons, B.A., LL.B (Hons), V semester LL.B and LL.M (Commercial Law) programs.

OUTCOME: Students will learn new terminologies related to IPR.
The month of December was set in motion with an exigent yet edifying crossword puzzle competition, conducted by the CMRU- KSCST Intellectual Property Right Cell. The competition was open to both the undergraduate as well as the post-graduate students. A total of 15 teams, consisting of two participants each, were a part of the event.
The crossword comprised of a total of 15 words, ranging from the various fields in the intellectual property arena; with hints provided. Each word is allotted 2 marks, with the total score being 30.
The highest score secured was 24, being the team ranked the first, while the teams that had secured scores closest to the highest score, were ranked the 2nd and 3rd.

With this conviction the CMRU KSCST IP Cell had come up with DE NOVO 2021, a Poster making contest which aims to enhance and bring out your creativity to think the scope of IPR in changing the world. And to gauge your knowledge and awareness of various trends in Intellectual Property Law.
The purpose of the Poster Making Competition is not just to judge the students based on their artistic and innovative aspects but also to trigger thought process among the students towards emerging changes in the area of Intellectual Property. The competition focusing mainly on following themes:

· Intellectual Property Rights vis-à-vis COVID-19
· Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and IPR
The De Novo was open to all students (UG / PG / Ph.D / PG Diploma). Both Hand-made and Digital graphics posters are accepted. The Submissions were accompanied with brief write up explaining the poster. The evaluation was gone through two rounds.

Guest Lecture on the occasion of World Intellectual Property Day - 2021
The CMRU - SOLS had organized a web event on the occasion of World Intellectual Property Day on 26th April, 2021. In order to grace the event we have invited a guest speaker Mrs. Prem Rajakumari, Advocate and Legal Consultant, who has imparted knowledge on the topic 'Trademarks- Practice and Procedure'. The event has taken place on the online Zoom platform. There were about 65 participants.
The guest speaker shared the basic information about trademark as an intellectual property and registration of trademarks and its practice and procedure. The practical approach of trademarks filing has been explained by the speaker.

Inauguration of CMRU- KSCST IP Cell
The Inauguration of CMRU- KSCST IP Cell and National Workshop on significance of IPR was held on 4th May, 2019 at CMR University, School of Legal Studies. The workshop was organised with the motive of spreading the knowledge on the Intellectual Property Rights, its importance and protection.

He explained the meaning of the intellectual property through video sessions followed by the inspiring examples in this field such as Dr. Vishal Rao, Noted Scientist Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar, and Mr. Suresh Garimella. He also gave current cases to explain the protection of these rights and the responsibility of lawyers to protect these rights.
Mr. Hemant Kumar H., Chief Scientific Officer at Karnataka State Council for Science & Technology. He is currently investigating the Karnataka Natural Data Management (NRDMS). He inspired the audience by sharing his working experience in this field. He elaborated on the policies and technologies being followed by the KSCST. He concluded by sharing his aim to establish 100 IP cells. He also shared that he had been successful to establish 10 cells from 2015.
