ECC Art

Spots and Dots

In ECC we draw inspiration for our art projects from books and stories. Today we read "Put Me in the Zoo" by Robert Lopshire. This funny book is about an animal that impresses two children with his interesting and colorful spots.

We thought that the art room would be improved by adding some spots so we went to work to re-decorate! We then created out own spots and dots by printing with a variety of found objects.

Colors!

We read a book called, "Bear Sees Colors". This is a wonderful book where Bear explores his world of color with his friends.

We explored our world of color by going on a color hunt. Then, using monochromatic color schemes, we created multimedia collages!

Heritage Week

We celebrated Guatemala Heritage Week by exploring the people and places of Guatemala by reading the book "Guatemala ABCs".

I then gave each student air clay in the primary colors: red, yellow and blue, to create something that is from Guatemala. There was only one problem; we needed green for a quetzal and orange for lava on the volcano and all the colors to create a rainbow. We solved our problem by referring to the classroom interactive color wheel for guidance. The students learned how to mix all the colors of the rainbow from just the three primary colors! Look at their beautiful creations!

Our Classroom Garden

We started ECC art the usual way by reading a book. We read, "Our Community Garden". Audrey Aubergine and her friends enjoy their neighborhood’s community garden, where they play hide-and-seek, tend giant sunflowers, and discover nature’s possibilities.

We then listed what we would like to grow in our class room garden. We talked about what kind of critters would live in our garden. We then voted as a class community on what (marker, crayons, cut paper shapes) we should use to create our garden. Between both of the ECC classes our classroom garden was well attended to and very fruitful!

3D Line Sculptures

Today we started out reading and then reciting the poem, "Larry the Line". We made many kinds of lines with our arms and then drew the lines that Larry can make on the white board.

We then created 3D line sculptures. We learned what a sculpture is and the students had to make "feet" on the paper strips so they could "stand". They used a brush and glue to attach the strips to the base.

Chamaleleons are Cool (and Warm)

In the book, "Chameleons are Cool" we learned all sorts of interesting facts about chameleons. One interesting fact is that chameleons change color according to their moods.

The students learned to identify warm and cool colors and they were introduced to the concept that colors emanate different moods. The students used crayons to color their own chameleons by using warm colors on one side and cool colors on the other side. We then finished the chameleons with watercolor.

Printing Ice Cream Cones

We read and discussed the book "Should I Share My Ice Cream?” by Mo Williams. We then use pencils to create texture on ice cream scoops and cones. We then mixed “ice cream flavors” by making tints (adding white). The students printed the cones and added the scoops one flavor at a time.
