Wednesday, May 1 Day 6 - No Duty

Thank you for taking my absence. My Grade 2 students' concert was last night and I woke up feeling terrible. The other teacher, Ms. Dahn will be in the gym most of the day preparing for her students' concert on Thursday. All music classes will be doubled up today. Here is the schedule. There may be some differences for the Grade 2 classes as some of Ms. Dahn's classes may be rehearsing, especially in the afternoon:

8:40 3E & 3G

9:10 1G & 1H

9:40 KI

10:15 Recess for 2 & 3 No Duty

10:30 KD & KF

11:00 2A & 2B (some 2B students may be rehearsing in the gym)

11:30 PREP

12:00 Lunch

12:25 Recess for 2 & 3 No Duty

12:55 1C & 1D

1:25 2H & 2I (Likely only 2H as 2I will be rehearsing)

1:55 3B & 3C

Each class starts with "Kid of the Day" using the Wheel of Names (click the wheel to open).

"Open" to find the class

Click to spin the wheel. There's a song the kids will sing.

After the "winner" is shown, click "Hide"

Then click "Save".

Kid of the Day is the helper and choses a prize from the treasure box at the end of music class.

Kindergarten

The book is on the music stand next to the piao. Grade 1 have already read this. They heard this as part of the Grade 1 Love & Kindness Assembly. Play this video first and then share the book.

Sing the words to the tune of "Frere jacques" and they repeat after you.To extend the activity, start a discussion about which instruments on our percussion shelf can bring the story to life (shakers on Swish, swish, swish; hand drums on Thread of Love, etc.)

Most have seen the video but we haven't practiced it. Students will stand and move however the music inspires them (shake hips, knees, play "drums", dance). Then show the Dora video and have them "mix" the chocolate in the air. Notice how they go from slow to fast. Talk about the difference between the way we say chocolate in English (and french for KI) and the numbers 1, 2, 3. If you've done this before, feel free to adjust the activity.

Kid of the Day can hand help hand out scarves. They can move gently during the verses and sway back and forth during the chorus.

Grade 1 & 2

It's Diversity Week so we are celebrating other cultures as well as Black History Month. You may read the book on your own or use the video from Symphony Story Time.

Start by asking the class to think about their name. Do they know where it came from? Does anyone ever say their name wrong and they have to correct them? Start by watching this video by the other who explains how to say the names in the book.

Kid of the Day can hand help hand out scarves. They can move gently during the verses and sway back and forth during the chorus. Next read the book and see if there's anything they recognize.

Grade Three

We have been working on our new note, Low E. Remind them to use slow air and make sure all finger holes are covered.

This is a warm up. First listen (blue), then play (yellow). Click on the wheel to adjust to .75 if it's too fast. It won't change the pitch.

In this version the "test" takes away the note names.  Adjust the speed to .75 if necessary. It won't change the pitch.

Extra activites. Please also see Emergency Sub Plan for extra activities.

Copy of February Music Activities

There are lots of activities in this collection.

Grade 1

Grade 2 & 3

We have used these percussion play-alongs before. I usually put students in rows and have each row do an instrument:

Row 1 - Handrums

Row 2 - Tambourines

Row 3 - Sticks

Row 4 - Triangles

Feel free to rearrange rows so there are an even(ish) number per row.

They will want to do it again so I included two videos and they both have the same instrumentation.

We learned about, listened and moved to "In the Hall of the Mountain King" before Halloween. We do lots of body percussion in music. But not like this!

Movement

Please have the Kid of the Day hand out scarves. Remember to pull from the bottom of the holder and you get what you get and don't get upset! While they're being handed out ask if they can name some ocean creatures. Then they can act out with their scarves the way that creature might move.

Follow the video and sing along.

Just play a few rounds, around 5 minutes. Remind the classes to be safe and respectful.

Please hand out B (with cap), C, D. E, F, G Boomwhackers. They will love this. You, maybe not so much.

Extra activites - students are expected to stay in their spots for movement activities.

The instructions are pretty simple although we haven't done this one before. Do as much or as little as you like.

Students will stand in their spots. Ask them to choose Green, Red or Blue and arrange them in a group. They will clap (or you can call out "pat", "stomp", "snap" only on the yellow circle. It's lots of fun

Student do actions along with the video.

RHYTHM

Have students clap and speak the rhythm.
