How Can I Help at Home?
It is important for a child to be able to identify a body part that is hurting or feeling sick. This is one reason why we learn these words quickly. However, your child can practice these words while playing with dolls, drawing people, or playing "Simon Says."
In Canada, it is not okay to say things about another person's body. It is wrong to say that someone is fat or ugly or too tall/short or that they look like an animal (even if it is a cute animal.)
Clothes (especially seasonal clothes such as hats, mittens, scarves, and snowpants) are something we talk about at school. Children often lose these items. If you are unsure of what kinds of clothing your child will need for winter, please ask the teacher for help. It can get very cold in PEI.
Ask your child what they are wearing in their first language and English. Talk to them about giving complements to others on their clothes. For example: "I like your shirt." This is a simple way to start an interaction and it is sure to make someone smile! Remind them that it is better to stay silent if they don't like someone's clothes.
