Your child needs to memorize these words in order to start reading. There are 5 sets of cards. I will send home a pack of cards with your child's first language on one side and English on the other side. You can use these cards as flash cards and to play games. My advice is to practice a few words a week and then next week add more. We will be studying them in the order below.
Memory: Make a double set of cards with the English words only and put them face down. Have your child turn over the card and read the word and then chose a second card to try to mach the first. If they do not match, then they must turn them back over. If they do match, they can pick up the cards. The player with the most cards is the winner.
Slap It: Put the cards out with the English side up. One player says a word and everyone must race to touch it. The person to touch it first can keep the card. The player with the most cards wins. Take turns being the person who says the words on the cards.
Go Fish: When your child has memorized most of the words, you can make a double set of cards with the English on one side. Mix the cards and give five to each player. The first person chooses someone and says, "Do you have ________?" If the person has that word then they must give it to the person who asked. If not, they say, "Go fish!" Then the person who asked must pick up an new card from the deck and add it to their hand. The person with the most pairs wins.
Word Hunt: Give your child a book, magazine, or even a cereal box. Have them circle any words that they can read from their list.
