June 21-25, 2021
Important Dates:
June 21st- End of Year Celebrations
June 22- 3C/4A Talent Show
June 28th- Last day of School
Hi families,
Can you believe this is the last full week of the school year?! I am looking forward to a fun week with the class by starting it off with our end of the year celebration tomorrow! We will be watching a movie, have an artist teach us how to paint using watercolors, followed by pizza and snacks throughout the day! Please have your child bring in a water bottle, as it will be another hot day.
I have received most of the money for our End of Year Celebration for tomorrow! If you have not yet sent in the $10.00 please do so as soon as possible. You can e-transfer or send in cash.
We are going to have a Talent Show on Tuesday with our cohort buddies 4A. I told the students if they would like to record something they are not able to perform at school such as, gymnastics, riding lessons, basketball etc. you can email it to me (ssellar@edu.pe.ca) or take it in on a scan disc and I can put it on the projector for everyone to watch. Please keep it under 2 minutes if you chose to make a video. I will bring in my keyboard for anyone who wishes to play a song on the piano. But, if you choose not to participate that is okay too, because being part of the audience is also a very important role to putting on a show! I can’t wait to see all the talent in 3C!
Last week we finished our health program on personal safety and the class did so well on this unit.
As you noticed I started sending home some of your child’s belongings last week. I plan to send home more throughout this week.
I have mixed feelings as we enter this last week of school. I am so glad we got to be in school all year and looking back I am so thankful for all of your support with the online homework and flexibility you had with a school year like no other. It has been an absolute joy each day being your child’s teacher and having the privilege to watch them learn and grow. I am going to miss them so much, but I know they are ready for summer break! Anyway, to end the year we are going to have a wonderful last FULL week together in 3C!!!!
Enjoy the week!

Last week, the kids finished typing up their persuasive speeches and we hope to share them this week. The students will be starting another special writing activity this week!
In math we started perimeter. The students have been creating shapes and finding the outside measurement around the object. This week we will introduce centimeters (cm) and meters (m) as the two units of measurement we focus on in grade 3. It is important for your child to continue to work on their basic math facts to 18 both addition and subtraction.
In word work this week we will be looking at r-influenced o words that have or/ore/oar/ w+or.

Fidget Tools
I have spoken to the student on the proper use of fidget tools and how they are to be used in the classroom, but unfortunately they are becoming an issue. Please only allow your child to bring one fidget tool to school and only if it is needed. I have noticed students taking them out to play with for recess and trading them which is not allowed! Fidget tools have a purpose, but when they are being used as a toy and distracting others they do not serve their purpose. Thank you for your understanding!

Important Changes Starting Monday, April 12
Construction on our addition is currently underway. They are making a new parent drop-off/pick-up loop at the top of our current bus loop. Construction on the new drop-off/pick-up loop will be taking place this weekend. The new parent drop-off/pick-up loop will be in use first thing Monday morning.
Procedures for Regular Parent Drop-Off in the Morning
– Please note that parents can no longer drop students off in front of the school. This area is reserved for busses only and staff.
– Parents are asked to proceed into the right side of the new parent drop off/pick up loop. Please go as far as you can to the pylon at the top of the drop-off loop.
– Parents are asked to remain in their vehicles. When parents get out of the vehicle, you hold up traffic in the drop-off zone. The new drop-off zone is much smaller than the one we were previously using.
– Students are required to get out of the car on the passenger door side. Please make sure your child’s car seat is located on the passenger side.
– Students need to be ready to get out of the car. Staff will be there to help if necessary. Students need to be dressed and ready to exit the vehicle quickly.
Procedures for Parent Drop-Off in Morning for Hang-Outs Students
– Parents are to drop their child off using the new parent drop-off loop.
– Staff will be there to direct students on the first day.
– Parents are asked to stay in their car. Staff will direct students.
Procedures for dropping off/picking up a child during the school day 8:45-1:30 – During these hours, parents can drop-off/pick-up your child using the front driveway. Please note that the front doors will be locked and students will need to be buzzed in (as they currently are). If you are picking up your child, please call the school office, and we will send your child out to meet you. If you are picking up or dropping off your child outside of these hours, you need to use the new parent drop-off/pick-up zone.
Walkers -For safety reasons, walkers will be held until busses leave the school.
We are anticipating that it will be very busy during drop off and pick-up times. If possible, it might be good to have your child travel on the bus. Otherwise, we are asking for everyone’s patience.

Hi Families,
I hope you had a great weekend! Although we are now into spring our weather has turned back to winter. Hopefully the snow won’t last long and the warmer weather is near.
We started our persuasive writing unit and the students are loving it. Last week we learned about writing persuasive speeches and how to come up with a thesis. Our first strategy was finding a problem and how we could fix that problem. The students came up with so many wonderful examples to write about such as speed bumps, new playground equipment, picnic tables at the school, etc. Our second strategy we learned about was people who deserve attention or about places, things or ideas that are noteworthy. So many students wrote about someone special in their life and it was wonderful to hear how important the noteworthy person is in their life.
We will continue with our procedural writing this week. Students will be learning about who their audience is and how to address their audience in their writing, as well as editing as we go. Once we complete our first bend in our writing unit the students will choose their own topic to develop into their persuasive writing project over the next few weeks.
In Reading workshop, we will be reading persuasive texts and looking to see what the author is trying to convince us to think or do.
In math we have been working on division and how to determine if we are equal sharing or making equal groups with our division story problems. This week we will introduce a division strategy called repeated subtraction.

Hi Families,
We had quite a week last week! I was so happy to be back in school on Thursday and see my students. With only having one day of school last week it just shows how fast things can change. At the beginning of the school year I provided each student with a red duotang that contains all their login information for google, epic books, IXl and their email. If you could please take the time to check that you have this information at home I would greatly appreciate it. My hope is that we will stay in the school and not need to go to home learning but last week just proved how quickly things can change and I want to make sure we are prepared.
Although I would have preferred in person interviews to show you all of your child’s wonderful work it was so nice to chat with you about your child’s progress last week.
We just finished our non-fiction writing unit and will be having a celebration this week. We are going to take this week to complete some material I signed up for before we start our new writing unit after march break. This week we will be working on a program developed by Junior Achievement called ‘Our Community.’ Your child will be bringing home an interview form for them to conduct an interview with someone in their family to learn about jobs. If you could please have this done and send it back by Wednesday, March 10th that would be greatly appreciated.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Our parent/teacher conferences will no longer be in person and it will now be a phone interview. I will call each of you at our scheduled interview time. I do apologize if you have tried to reach out me through email and I have not responded. It is due to our email system being down...horrible timing I know! I hope to send out a group email when the system is back up and working to clarify phone numbers and interview times. I appreciate your understanding and patience.
Have a wonderful evening and I will be in touch soon!

March 1-4, 2021
Hi Families,
With the news last evening from Premier King and Dr. Morrison it has definitely changed the outlook of our week. As of right now, I do not know how parent teacher conferences will look. When I find out more information I will let you know. I encourage your child to continue going on IXL, xtramath and epic books over the next few days. Below I have information for meal support through our healthy lunch program.
Take care,
Shanda
As per the most recent COVID-19 update, meals ordered between Monday, March 1 and Wednesday March 3 will be canceled.
Those families who placed meal orders for these days can expect to see a meal credit(s) on their account during the next ordering cycle.
With all schools closed until at least Wednesday, March 3, we understand that this may leave families who depend on school meal programs in a difficult situation.
If you are a family in this situation, the Department of Education and Lifelong Learning would like to extend the offer of a healthy meal for each school day beginning Tuesday, March 2 until Wednesday, March 3. Meals will be delivered directly to families' homes daily.
If you would like to enroll in this program, please contact us by Monday, March 1 at 4 PM by email: peischoolfood@edu.pe.ca or by phone: 902-438-4895.
Thanks,
PEI Healthy School Food Team

Hi Families,
I hope you enjoyed the long weekend! It was so nice to spend some extra time with our families. Last week was a busy week with the storm day on Monday, our Valentine’s Day celebration and the final Thumbody presentation. We weren’t able to complete all the activities we had planned last week, so I did not have a spelling test on Friday…the kids were thrilled!!! We will continue working on the same word list this week to further our understanding on homophones.
Writing Workshop
This month we will continue working and finishing up our nonfiction writing unit.
Reading Workshop
In reading workshop we will continue to learn about text features and how they add to nonfiction books. We will work together as a group and independently finding the main idea in non-fiction texts.
Math
Multiplication has been a huge success in 3C! They are loving this outcome and are doing so well with representing multiplication sentence with equal groups, repeated addition and skip counting. This week I will introduce arrays, which are arrangements of objects or pictures in rows and columns to represent a multiplication sentence.
Word Work
We will continue to work on the same words from last week due to not having enough time with the storm day and Valentine’s Day activities. We are working on the long and short U and also learning about homophones.
Word List: thumb, new, blue, grew, truth, flue, plump, chew, do, due, brush, glue, few, junk, true, stuck, flew, stew, knew, crew, blew, dew, trunk, sew.
Homework

Hi Families,
I hope you enjoyed the weekend! It was so mild Saturday it almost felt like spring was in the air, but it looks like we will be getting snow on Monday. Last week was a busy week in 3C. We made Valentine’s Day cards for seniors that will be dropped off at a Nursing Home. The students did a wonderful job decorating and writing a kind and thoughtful message inside. We also had the Thumbody program come into our class for a presentation on Friday. This program is developed by the Canadian Mental Health Association. I sent home the brochure on Friday if you would like to have a look through it and talk with your child about the presentation. The Thumbody program will be back in our class this Friday for their last presentation.
Writing Workshop
This month we will continue working and finishing up our nonfiction writing unit.
Reading Workshop
In reading workshop we will continue to learn about text features and how they add to nonfiction books. We are working on finding the main idea on each page as we read. To find the main idea we need to find the ‘who’ and the ‘what’ on the page. We call this our pop out sentence and it is usually the first sentence in a paragraph explaining what the section is about.
Math
• representing and explaining multiplication using equal grouping and arrays
• creating and solving problems in context that involve multiplication
• modelling multiplication using concrete and visual representations, and recording the process symbolically
• relating multiplication to repeated addition
• relating multiplication to division.

Valentine’s Day
We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Friday, February 12th. At our staff meeting we made the decision to not have students bring in baked goods for our celebration due to Covid-19. If your valentine has an individually wrapped candy that can be sent home you may send that in. Students are welcome to exchange Valentine’s with each other, but I do ask that you have one valentine for every child so no one feels left out. Thank you!

Notes from the Office:
Bring your own Cutlery to School:
The PEI Healthy School Food Program recognizes the importance of environmental sustainability. To reduce the program’s foot print, we will be moving towards a 100% bring your own cutlery model.
Beginning the week of February 15th, students participating in the PEI Healthy School Food Program must bring their own cutlery to school. Please note that February 12th will be the last day that vendors will be providing cutlery with meals.
Please note: West Royalty Elementary School does not have cutlery, so please make sure your child has a spoon or fork each day for their lunch.
Morning Drop Off:
Please do not drop students off to school until 8:05 am. Staff are not available until this time. If you arrive early and are in the student drop off lane, please keep children inside your vehicle until 8:05 am. This is when our staff head outside for outdoor supervision and when our staff inside the school are ready to receive students. (In case of a 1 hour delay in school, drop off time will be 9:05 am)
In addition, the bus loop is only for buses. Please do not enter the bus loop to drop off your child. Please drop your child off at the parent drop off zone only. Thank you for your cooperation!
Winter Weather Clothing:
Please make sure that your child(ren) are coming to school dressed for the outdoor weather. It is important during the winter months that children have warm boots, snow pants, winter jacket, hat and mittens/gloves (2 pairs). All of our classes have recess outside for 30 minutes daily. The only time we would have an indoor recess is if it is raining heavily, storming and/or extreme cold (Eg. Wind chill -20C). We do not have extra snow pants or winter coats on hand at school. It is also important to pack a change of clothes and extra socks in the event your child becomes wet or soiled during the day (E.g. spilled lunch on themselves, toilet accident, wet and cold from recess, etc.). Thanks for your help with this.
Parent Support for Remote Learning:
Parent Support for Remote Learning There is a new parent support for remote learning webpage. It is linked here: https://sites.google.com/cloud.edu.pe.ca/assistance/home. This page provides “how to” information and videos for parents on Google account access, Google Sites, Google Classroom, Google Meet, Sora and other resources.
Have a great week!

January 18-22
Hi Families,
We had another great week in 3C! It is hard to believe that it is the middle of January. Time sure is flying by!
Writing Workshop
Last week we started organizing our informational writing by developing a table contents. The students chose a heading from their table of contents that they felt most ready to start writing about and began digging into their informational writing piece. This week in writing the students will continue to develop their informational writing piece and work on elaborating their ideas. The students will also have a chance to do a bit of research to ensure accuracy in their writing.
Reading Workshop
The class is absolutely loving to read non-fiction books! They are learning to find the main idea by looking for the ‘Who and What,’ in their reading. This week the students will be teaching each other from their non-fiction texts by explain the main ideas and supporting details they find.
Math
In math we are continuing to work on our outcomes listed below. Although our main focus this week will be on subtracting 3-digit numbers with regrouping.

-3.N7 Describe and apply mental mathematics strategies for subtracting two 2-digit numerals.
-3.N8 Apply estimation strategies to predict sums and differences of two 2-digit numerals in a problem solving context.
-3.N9 Demonstrate an understanding of addition and subtraction of numbers with answers to 1000 (limited to 1, 2 and 3-digit numerals).
Word Work
We will be working on the long and short e again this week. This word sort is more complex as the ea pattern can fall under the long e and short e sound. Fortunately, most of the short ea words rhyme and the students should be able to remember them as a group.

Homework
IXL- 10 minutes each night
Reading- 20 minutes each night.
Math- I am sending home another math sheet to be sent back in by Friday, January 22nd. It is two sided and includes math facts up to 18. It does not have to be timed, but some students like to try and race their own time to see their growth. Please correct it together. Xtramath is a great program to help with math facts if you notice your child having difficulties with completing this sheet and I would highly recommend them to spend a few minutes each evening practicing.
Have a great week!

Hi Families,
I hope you all enjoyed the wonderful weekend. Last week we had so much fun in 3C incorporating art into our new procedural writing unit. The students worked so well by following the steps to draw a reindeer looking through a window. The pictures turned out beautiful! We also wrote out the steps on, 'How to Eat an Oreo Cookie' and 'How to Make Hot Chocolate,' followed by doing the activity. It is safe to say the students are loving this writing unit! This week we will continue with our procedural writing.
In math I introduced rounding to the nearest 10’s. I have been teaching the students when we round we look at the ones place and if the number is 5 or greater we would round up to the nearest 10’s and if it is 4 or less, we would round down to the nearest 10’s. We will continue practicing rounding this week and introduce estimating our addition and subtraction problems to the nearest 10’s before we solve.
Last week in Reader’s Workshop we finished the story 'Stone Fox.' It had a very sad ending and many of the students were very emotional when the lovable dog, Searchlight, had died. With that being said, we will be starting a new read aloud, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” which is a very funny story that shows the true meaning of the holidays.
In word work we will be focusing on the long and short O sound.
Word list- box, rode, road, chose, boat, love, goat, soap, knock, slope, foam, load, whole, one, goal, stop, toad, coat, float, drop, stone.
I mentioned to the students if they have a holiday story they would like me to read aloud they are more than welcome to bring it in for shared reading time.
Have a wonderful week,
Shanda
Important Dates
December 4th- Jersey Day
December 10th- Ugly Sweater Day
December 16th- Holiday Hats
December 18th- PJ Day (Last School Day of 2020)
January 4th- First School Day of 2021
Hi Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. It is hard to believe that we are now entering our first week of December. In Writer’s Workshop we finished our unit on writing true stories and we will be starting our new unit on procedural writing. I think this will be a fun unit for the students before the holidays.
In Math, the students have been working on two-digit addition. We will be working on our math strategy ‘up through the tens’ and start estimation this week.
In word study, we will be continuing our work on long and short a vowel sounds in words.
For homework this week, I would like you to practice going on to our Google Classroom. It is important that we are familiar with this program if we do happen to go back to home learning. I will post one math activity in our classroom to replace one evening of IXL/Xtramath. The activity will be a Jamboard that you will find under the classwork section and under the heading Math. The students have used Jamboards so there should be no issues. When submitting their work you will need to click ‘Turn in.’ The easiest way to find the ‘ turn in’ option is after you finish the activity go back to the classwork section and under the assignment you will click ‘view assignment,’ and this will bring you to the option to turn in. Please practice your spelling words this week and continue to read each night and record your reading.
Have a wonderful week,
Shanda
November 23-26, 2020
Hi Families,
It was wonderful finally meeting each of you last week during parent-teacher conferences and discussing the progress your child has made this year.
We are entering the last week of November and I can’t get over how fast the time is flying by. This week we will be wrapping up our unit Crafting True Stories in Writer’s Workshop. In math we will begin double-digit addition. I will be introducing the strategy front-end addition where we add the tens in both numbers and then add the ones.
Ex. 34 + 23=
Add the tens 30 + 20 = 50
Add the ones 4 + 3= 7
Add the tens and ones 50 + 7= 57
34 + 23 = 57.
We are reading the book “Stone Fox,” in Reader’s Workshop and learning how to retell by focusing on the characters, big events, problem/solution and if there is a lesson to be told. In Word Work this week we are working on the /k/ sound with ending -ck, ke, or -k. Also, there will be no school on Friday, as there is a professional learning day for staff.
Have a wonderful week!

Hi Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend! This week we will be having our parent-teacher conferences and I look forward to meeting with you and discussing your child’s progress. There are some guidelines in place for attending the conference so please read over them posted below.
This week in writing the students will continue with their Personal Narrative story and take a deeper look at the revising process. The students have taken on the role of being the “captain” of their writing and are now deciding what they need to work on in their writing. The students are very familiar with the expectations of what good writing looks like and have a checklist to guide them. By early next week they should have their final writing project complete and we will have a celebration to share all of their hard work!
In Reading Workshop we will be starting our new mentor text “Stone Fox.” We are continuing to build a reading life and will be focusing on understanding the story as we read by checking comprehension, assembling facts, making predictions and retelling our story. Last week we finished the read aloud, “The One and Only Bob,” and the excitement the students had for this story and the discussions it brought to our classroom were truly special. I am sure your child would love to tell you all about the main character, Bob.
In Word Work we finished our first unit on short and long vowel sounds and we will be having a review this week. The words are posted on our homework section of the blog. The spelling test will be on Thursday this week due to no school on Friday. I remind the students frequently that the spelling test is a check-in for them to notice the patterns in spelling they need to work on and see their improvements.
This week in math we are going to review our mental math strategies and continue practicing on skip counting by 3’s, 4’s and 25’s.
Have a wonderful week,
Shanda

Important Notices from the Office
Parent/Teacher Interviews
After further discussions with the Chief Public Health Office and the DELL, some amendments to the parent teacher interview parameters are required. Below, please find the parameters communicated last week with the amendments highlighted in bold.
Parent Teacher Interviews
– All staff and parents are required to wear non-medical masks, except when seated a minimum of 6-feet apart during the interview.
– For in-person interviews, only one parent/guardian per child should be in attendance.
–No students or other children should be in attendance.
-If a parent/guardian is not able to attend in-person, alternative arrangements should be made.
– Parents are asked to limit their time at the school to the interview time in order to minimize the number of people in the school at a given time.
– Parents are not required to sign in at the entrance but are expected to sign in with every teacher they meet.
Access to the School
Just a reminder that if parents need to pick up a student during the school day, you are asked to remain in your vehicle and call the school. We will send your child out to meet you. We really need to minimize parent access to the school unless it is an emergency situation. Parents who have children in the Hangout Program are also not permitted in the school. You will need to call the Hangout program to let them know your child has arrived, and also call the Hangout Program when you are there to pick up your child.
Drop-off Procedures:
As you know, on certain days there is more traffic than others, please be patient and do not pass any stopped vehicles as this is a safety concern.
We ask that parents pull up into the loop closest to the front door and if possible towards end of building so we can keep the traffic moving. There are staff members out front directing parents and students. Please make sure that your child knows that they need to get out of the car quickly (on the passenger side) as there will be others waiting in line.
November 2-6, 2020
Hello Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful Hallowe’en weekend and enjoyed the extra hour with the time change. We are now entering our first week of November and the school year is surely flying by. This week we will continue to work on our small moment writing piece in Writer’s Workshop. We will be finding the heart of our story and provide more detail by explaining what is happening bit by bit. Also, we will be learning about paragraphs and how to structure our ideas. In word work we will be looking at the long and short u. I will also be re-assessing the 103 spelling words later this week or early next week. Please refer to your child’s duotang and practice the words they got incorrect. In math we will continue to work on skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s from any starting number to 1000. We will be counting with money using nickels, dimes, and quarters to represent our 5’s 10’s and 25’s. My goal this week is to introduce counting by 3’s and 4’s only starting on multiples of 3’s and 4’s. We will continue to work on place value, comparing and ordering numbers, and our mental math strategies. I sent home a sheet in your child’s duotang showing a variety of mental math strategies we use for addition and subtraction.

Hello Families,
I hope you all enjoyed the weekend. It is hard to believe we are heading into our last week of October. This week we will be starting our bend II in our Writer’s Workshop. We will be choosing one of our small moment writing pieces and use this chosen piece to dive further into the writing process. This week the focus will be on rehearsing our story many times. In Reader’s Workshop we have been working on building our reading time and making sure we are comprehending what we are reading. The students have been stopping after reading each page and asking themselves what happened and if they are not able to explain they must re-read the page again. Last week we started our guided reading groups. During this time, I work with a small group on their reading. In word work we will be looking at the long and short O. For math we will continue to work on skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s from any starting number to 1000 and by 25’s starting with multiples of 25’s to 1000. We will continue to work on place value, comparing and ordering numbers and our mental math strategies.
Homework: Please check the homework section on the blog. I will send home a hard copy of the list words I would like your child to practice for the week with a picture word sort. Please look for this in their duotang.

October 19-23, 2020
Hi families,
I hope you had a wonderful weekend enjoying the beautiful weather we are having. We are back to a full week of school after a short week last week. We will be continuing with our new units for reading and writing workshop. The students were introduced to writing in their writer’s notebooks last week. We worked on our writer’s goal and strategies for coming up with an idea for writing when we are stuck. In reading, we have been working on increasing our independent reading time each day. We have been talking about stopping after each page read and doing a check in on our understanding of what we have read, and we will continue to work on reading comprehension strategies this week. We started reading the “One and Only Bob,” last week. I am using this read aloud for our classroom discussions on character development, inferences, comprehension, and working on our speaking and listening outcomes. In word work, we will be looking at the long and short i vowel sounds. I will be sending home a word sort for your child to practice this week. In math, we are working on skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s from any starting point and skip counting by 25’s following only multiples of 25. I will be introducing a strategy for solving addition and subtraction problems by using a part, part, whole chart this week.
Epic Books- I sent all of you that have not joined epic books an email to hopefully allow you access after 4:00pm. Please message me if you are still unable to access this site and I will see what I can do to help.
IXL- IXL is great program for students to have extra practice at home on their math. I will highlight the problems we are to work on. If you are having any difficulties, please reach out to me.
Reading logs- I have been checking the reading logs and noticed some have not been filled out. It is the student’s responsibility and I encourage them to record their reading each night to see the progress they are making as readers.
Google Classroom- We setup a google classroom last week. I realized it is a much easier platform for us to share work with each other. We are going to spend some more time practicing going on google classroom this week.
Notes from the Office:
Early Arrivals:
Unless your child is in the early morning childcare program, students should not arrive before 8:05 as there is no supervision.
School Supply Fee:
The Student school supply fee for the 2020-2021 school year is $40.00. If you have not yet paid this fee, there are two options for payment: 1. Send an E-transfer to Michele Coles at mhcoles@edu.pe.ca. Please include your child’s name and class along with answer to the security question. 2. Send CASH payment in to your child’s teacher. A receipt will be sent home with your child. If you want to purchase school supplies on your own, please visit https://edu.princeedwardisland.ca/psb/elsb-approved-school-supply-lists/ to view the grade level supplies required.
School Food Program Containers and Cutlery:
For those students who are participating in the Provincial School Food Program, we are asking students to take their food container home with them. These can be washed and used for other things (eg. School supplies, art project, leftovers, etc.). If you don’t want them, we encourage you to wash them and place them with your recyclable containers. In order to cut down on plastic cutlery, the School Food program is beginning a campaign called "BYOC- Bring Your Own Cutlery", where they are encouraging students and staff to pack their own cutlery from home to eat with, and bring back home for washing. Please remember to pack cutlery for your child.
Picture Retakes:
Monday, November 2, 2020- Please let me know so I will send your child.

October 13-16, 2020
Hello Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend and had a chance to enjoy some family time. Last week we completed an art project in 3C! The students created a fall scene with a forest of birch trees. I am so proud of all the artist we have in our class. We also finished the book “The One and Only Ivan.” They loved this book! We had a class vote for the next read aloud and the majority wanted to read the sequel “The One and Only Bob.” We will be starting this book on Tuesday.
We have been busy continuing to work on our small moments/ true story writing pieces. This week in Writer’s Workshop we will be starting a new unit called “Crafting True Stories.” The focus will still be on narrative writing. The students will look at themselves as writers. They will be thinking of the kind of writing they want to make and set goals for themselves. In Reader’s Workshop we will be focusing on comprehension. This will be done through envisioning, predicting, and retelling. We started our word study last week. The students sorted their words based on the long a and short a vowel sounds.
This week in math, we will be finishing up our two outcomes.
3.N2 Represent and describe numbers to 1000, concretely, pictorially, and symbolically
3.N3 Compare and order numbers to 1000.
We will be starting to look at two new outcomes this week.
3.N1 Say the number sequence forward and backward from 0 to 1000 by: 5s, 10s, or 100s, using any starting point; 3s using starting points that are multiples of 3; 4s using starting points that are multiples of 4; 25s, using starting points that are multiples of 25.
3.N10 Apply mental mathematics strategies and number properties, such as: using doubles; making 10; using the commutative property; using the property of zero; thinking addition for subtraction to determine answers for basic addition facts and related subtraction facts (to 18).
I sent home in your child’s duotang an information sheet with a username and password to access IXL math at home. This is a wonderful program that correlates with what your child is learning in the classroom
Homework: Please look under the homework section of our blog.
Reminder: Wednesday, October 14th- Fall Fundraiser Orders are due!
Have a wonderful week!

October 5-9, 2020
Hello Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I still cannot believe we are into October and the weather is holding up. Last week we had another wonderful week in 3C and I am happy to say we are settling into a routine. As I am sure your child has already told you, in 3C we use a ticket reward system for positive behavior, following classroom expectations, being a kind friend, a good listener and following instructions. Once a student receives 50 tickets they can cash them in for a prize. I am so happy with the amount of tickets I am giving out daily that I am sure someone will be cashing in for a prize real soon!
We have wonderful writers in 3C that have been so busy writing “small moments” from their lives. They have been focused on choosing a true topic that has happened to them (recount/personal narrative), planning and brainstorming, adding many details about that topic as they write a draft, and stretching that moment/event out as much as they can so their reader can see the movie happening in their heads. Once they have a first draft complete they start working on the revising process to make their writing even better. They are excited about sharing their pieces with the class and hearing two things the students liked about their writing and one wish for them to continue to work on. I am so proud of all their hard work!
In math we are continuing to work on our two outcomes, 3.N2 Represent and describe numbers to 1000, concretely, pictorially, and symbolically and 3.N3 Compare and order numbers to 1000. On Friday I sent home a booklet of math games that I will slowly introduce each game to the students. They also took home a math kit to help with the games. I recommend not writing in the booklets so you can reuse the pages throughout the year. Placing a sheet in a plastic sleeve (found at the dollar store) and using a whiteboard marker is a great way to reuse the pages.
I do plan to get the students setup for IXL. This is another online math site that our school has purchased for our students. Please keep a lookout in your child's homework duotang for the login information this week.
Last week in Reader’s Workshop we learned about fiction and non-fiction. Students were asked to write in their notebooks telling me if their book was fiction or non-fiction and explaining how they knew it fell into that category. We will continue to work on different genres of books and coming up with strategies to solve tricky words.
We will be starting our word study this week. We will be focusing on the long a and short a vowel sounds.
Homework:
Reading: Read for 15-20 minutes each night. You may read a book you have at home or go onto Epic books. Please continue to discuss with your child what they have read, to ask questions about their reading and to have your child record their reading in their homework duotang.
Math
Please have your child spend 5-10 minutes each night on Xtramath.
In our Math Booklet (sent home Friday) have your child fill out the Represent Number Mat (using a separate sheet of paper or placing the paper in a clear plastic sleeve using a dry erase marker) using the number 162.
Spelling
Continue to practice the 103 No Mistake Spelling Words.
Fall Fundraiser
Our Fall Fundraiser has started! The flyers were sent home with students last week. The fundraiser is to help provide items needed for our school. Students may win prizes for participating. The top 7 sellers in the school will earn a Cineplex Pass or Indigo gift card. The top sellers in each grade will earn a Mystery prize bag. Please help support our school by taking part in fundraising!
Please note that due to restrictions this year, our fundraiser is 100% online. All payments must be made online with a credit card or VISA debit. Orders will be shipped to the school for distribution and parents will be notified of a pick-up date.
All orders are due October 14th.
Covid
Parents are responsible to notify the school of the reason for the absence(s) from school. Families play an important role in slowing the spread of COVID-19 and ensuring that students can access educational services. It will be important for you to monitor your child’s health each day before sending them to school and to keep them home when they feel ill. If your child exhibits any of the symptoms listed below and they are unusual for your child or are not related to an existing condition (e.g. seasonal allergies), parents/guardians are asked to call 811 or your health care provider and report any symptoms of COVID-19 to the school. Students are expected to remain home until they are free of symptoms.
Symptoms include the following:
if you traveled outside regions as per the current CPHO guidelines, you are asked to declare this to the school, and follow the current CPHO measures in place at the time
e.g. self-new or worsening cough
shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
fever/chills
sore throat
runny nose, sneezing, congestion
headache
muscle aches
unusual fatigue
acute loss of sense of smell or taste
Any question please reach out to me anytime.

Fundraiser Due- Wednesday, October 14th
Update!
Just a reminder that tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day at our school.
Every Child Matters is a movement that is sweeping our country and YOU are invited to become a part of it! At six years old, Phyllis Webstad was excited about starting school. Her grandmother took her shopping and Phyllis picked out a shiny orange shirt to wear on the first day of residential school. Her new shirt was taken from her on that first day and she never saw it again. Phyllis' story is similar to many residential school survivors. Held annually on September 30th, this day honours these survivors of Indian Residential Schools. Please consider participating in Orange Shirt Day this year.
Also, I noticed that the weekly homework was posted on my weekly update, but not under the "homework" heading. I apologize for the mix up.
September 28- October 2, 2020
Hello Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! It looks like we are going to have some gorgeous weather this week. Although, most of us put away all our patio furniture in preparation for hurricane Teddy, and with the warm weather it feels like summer is back. Luckily, Teddy did not amount to anything except a storm day for the kiddos.
We are really getting into a routine in 3C. I keep reminding myself we have only been in school for a few weeks, but the kids have adjusted so well to all our new routines. This week we will continue setting up our Writing and Reading Workshop. This past week students have been working on small moment writing pieces. Students are understanding that writers do not just write, but they plan out their story by thinking, touching and telling their story across the pages, sketching, and then begin to write out their story. This week we will be revising our writing and adding more detail. In reading we are focusing on how reading is thinking. The students are making lots of connection to our read aloud “The One and Only Ivan.”
In math we are working on the two outcomes listed below.
3.N2 Represent and describe numbers to 1000, concretely, pictorially, and symbolically.
3.N3 Compare and order numbers to 1000.
I am hoping this week we will have a chance to make a Math Toolkit for each child to take home to support Homework. Please keep an eye out for these in your child’s communication bag and set aside.
Homework (Monday to Thursday night)
For math I would like your child to spend 5-10 minutes each night on Xtramath. The link can be found on our class blog under Student Web Links or by searching Xtramath in a search engine.
I would like to have your child read for 20 minutes each night. They may read a book they have at home or use Epic books. I hope the sheet I sent home on Friday to log onto Epic books after 4:00pm was helpful. I apologize for any confusion, as I thought the code would still work after 4:00pm, but it seems Epic books has made some changes since last year. Please have your child fill out the reading log each night. They have had lots of practice filling one out at school and should be a pro at this!
I sent home a copy of the 103 No Mistake Spelling Words last week. Please practice a few words each night that your child had difficulty with.
I would appreciate if the communication and homework duotang could come to school each day. If any important information is to be sent home I will have your child place it in their communication bag for safe travels.
Information:
Indoors
It is important for students to have a pair of indoor sneakers. It is required for gym class- no sandals, crocs, etc.
School Photos
Picture day for grade 3 is on Tuesday, September 29th.
Terry Fox Run
Students will be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Terry Fox Run through their Phys. Ed. class on Tuesday, September 29th. We are asking students to bring in a loonie or toonie donation to contribute to this worthwhile cause.
Orange Shirt Day
As I mentioned on Friday, Orange Shirt Day is on September 30th but due to some grades having school pictures that day we will be celebrating Orange Shirt Day on Friday, October 2nd.
Hot Lunches
A few students have not enjoyed some of the Healthy Food orders. Please try to send in some extra snacks if your child is trying out the healthy lunch program just in case your child does not care for the meal.

Update!
Hi families,
I wanted to send a quick update.
Orange Shirt Day was noted to take place on Wednesday, September 30th, but due to picture day taking place at our school we will be having Orange Shirt Day on Friday, October 2nd.
I sent home a math package this week. It was put together by the department and they are blackline masters that students would normally have access to in the classroom. The packets have been created by the math team to support face to face, and if need be, remote learning. Please keep them at home for you to use with your child.
I was informed that a few people were finding it challenging to access Epic books. I am sending home in your child's homework duotang a more detailed information sheet on how to access Epic books after 4:00 pm.
Reminder that our picture day is Tuesday, September 29th.
Have a wonderful weekend!

What a wonderful week in 3C!! We have started to get into the swing of things. The class was excited to start our writer’s workshop last week and we will continue working on generating ideas for small moments to write about. We are also working on revising our writing to add more detail for our reader. We have practiced organizing our story by touching and telling what will happen on each page before we begin writing. Students are then asked to sketch a simple reminder of what each page is about before we begin writing. This week we will continue working on this strategy in writer's workshop.
In reader’s workshop, we have been working on what is important during independent reading times and have been putting these into action during workshop time. This week we will be focusing on choosing our “just right” levels of books. As you may have heard, we are also reading “The One and Only Ivan,” as a read aloud. The class seems to be enjoying this story and it is a great book for classroom discussions.
In Math, we have been focusing on representing numbers in many different ways: base ten blocks, base ten name, words, tally, expanded form and standard form. The children have been involved in many learning opportunities to strengthen this skill by playing games, using manipulatives, as well as pencil and paper activities. They have really enjoying playing the game “I have… Who has…” and racing to beat our time each round.
Last week we completed our “No Excuse Spelling Words.” I will be sending home a copy of the words in their homework duotang. Please look over the words and work on the ones they found challenging. We will be focusing on these words over the next couple weeks and I will re-test on the challenging words. We will be getting into word work and spelling, but for now we are focusing on the challenging “No Excuse Spelling words.”
Homework
Homework will be starting this week and will run from Monday-Thursday. It will look different this year due to Covid-19 and limiting the transfer of books to and from school.
Reading-Your child is expected to read for 15 minutes each night. I will be sending home a reading log for you to fill in and monitor your child’s reading. If you do not know the level of the book you do not need to worry about filling in this portion of the reading log. You have the option to read a book you have at home or from our school library. I have also created a “class” on Epic books. I have included the class code in your child’s homework duotang to access our Epic classroom. I have sent home sample questions and prompts to help guide your book talks with your child. It is important to always be thinking as we read and ask questions for understanding and deeper thinking.
Math-In math we will be practicing our fast math facts. This is best done online through Xtramath. I have created a code for each student that will be found in their homework duotang.
To access the sites listed above for homework you can find them under the “Student Links” section on our class blog or you may type them into a search engine, such as google.
Headphones
If at all possible could your child please bring in a pair of cheap headphones to use while on the chromebooks. If you could have them in a plastic bag with your child’s name labelled on the bag that would be wonderful.
School Photos
Our school photos will be taken on Tuesday, September 29th.
School Clothing Sale
West Royalty School clothing will be on sale until September 25th. No late orders will be accepted. Please see the link below to place your orders. This is a wonderful fundraiser for our school!
Covid-19
Parents are responsible to notify the school of the reason for the absences(s) from school. school.
In addition, if you have traveled outside regions as per the current CPHO guidelines, you are asked to declare this to the school, and follow the current CPHO measures in place at the time (e.g. self-isolation).

Good Morning,
Welcome to our first full week of the new school year! Last week we focused on getting to know each other and setting classroom expectations. The class created a chart of what our classroom should look, feel, and sound like. I was so impressed with how well they developed our classroom expectations that foster a safe, welcoming, and ready to learn environment!
This week we will be starting our Reading, Writing and Math workshop model in a more structured way.
In Reader’s Workshop, students will be learning how to choose books within our classroom. Students will learn ways to choose books, how to know if a book is too easy/challenging/or just right, and how reading is thinking.
For Writer’s Workshop I am sending home an All About Me Bag that students are asked to fill with 4 items they want to share about themselves with the class. In class the students will use one of these items as an idea to write a small moment piece. Please have the bag returned by Tuesday.
In math, we will be working on place value and how to represent a number in many different ways: base ten blocks, base ten name, words, expanded form, standard form, and 10 more/less.
Last week the students received their username and passwords for the Chrome books. It would be greatly appreciated if you could send in a pair of inexpensive headphones for your child to use during technology. Please place them in a plastic bag with your child’s name on it.
I hope everyone has had no problem finding the online blog for 3C on the West Royalty School website. This will be the last week I will be sending home a paper copy of our weekly update. Please check the website daily. If any important information comes up during the week, I will post it there.
Have a wonderful week and please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns!

Welcome parents, guardians and students to a new school year! It was wonderful welcoming everyone back to school yesterday. I was amazed at how well everyone did with adapting to our "new normal."
This site is where I will be posting our weekly updates to let you know what is going on in 3C and any important dates or information that you may need to know. You will also notice on the site there is a section for student learning. If and when we go to online learning this is where you will access this information.
Our goal this week in 3C is to get to know each other and our daily routine. We are building relationships with each other and making connections to build a classroom community.
A few important things to mention, please call the office if your child will be absent for the day. Also, yesterday I sent home forms that are to be filled out. Please return them as soon as possible.
Lastly, please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns. I do check my email every morning, but if there is an important matter, such an after school pickup change, please call the office.
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns!
Thanks,
Shanda
