Week 24 - March 2nd - 5th 2026
In Fundations this week we learned 3 new trick words!! "are, to, and" We also worked on alphabetical order, beginning and end sounds, tapping for reading and writing, sentence structure and manipulating sounds within words. These concepts are then supported through different ways of play.π
This week we learned literacy, math, social studies and science outcomes through bear stories, manipulatives, songs, rhymes, imaginative play and games. Week 23 - Feb 23rd - 27th 2026
It was an exciting week in Fundations this week as we started to learn "trick words". These are words we can't read using our tapping strategy but we use often so we learn to recognize them as a whole word. This week we learned "the" and "a". We also continued to practice our tapping strategy for reading and writing, sentence development and recognizing long and short vowel sounds.
This week we also celebrated Pink shirt day, lead a school wide assembly on Fairness and celebrated 100 days in kindergarten. It was a busy fun filled week in KA.πBelow are examples of our play and learning! Have a wonderful weekend. Anitaπ

Grade 1 and kindergarten classes lead a school assembly on Fairness. We sang songs, watched different situations to determine if they were fair or unfair and created a fairness promise. Each home room received a poster for their class.π

Week 22 - Feb 17th - 20th 2026
This week we continued with Unit 3 in the Fundations literacy program. We worked on the tapping strategy for reading and writing including tapping nonsense words, alphabetical order, long and short vowel sounds, story comprehension and identifying initial and end consonant sounds in words.

Week 21 - Feb 9th - 13th 2026
This week we started unit 3 in the Fundations literacy program. During this unit we will be building on what we already know about letters and sounds and practicing the tapping and blending strategy. We will learn to manipulate letters to create new words by changing the beginning, middle and end sounds as well as learning to distinguish between short and long vowel sounds.

We created our own valentine caterpillar. Each segment was a letter in our name. We had to determine how many segments we needed then add one more for the head.
We cut out the hearts, glued them on the paper to create the caterpillar then added details.π

Week 20 - Feb 2nd - 6th 2026
This week we finished Unit 2 in the Fundations literacy program by learning the upper case letters, V, W, X. Y and Z as well as continuing tapping for reading and alphabetical order.
This week we learned that the Groundhog did not see his shadow and so the story goes... that means Spring will be coming soon.π In the meantime we will continue to celebrate Winter and all the fun we can have outside!βοΈβοΈ We also got to go bowling with our friends this week which was lots of fun!! Every Monday we choose 4 books from the class library to borrow for the week. We write the titles in our journal.

We put baby oil, blue water and an alkaseltzer tablet in a jar to see what would happen. When we added the water to the oil they seperated and the oil did not turn blue!
When we used 1 alkaseltzer tablet we observed a few bubbles.
When we added 2 alkaseltzer tablets we saw a blizzard!!!!
We discussed then drew a picture to show the answer to the morning question then we wrote it as a math sentence.
We had an amazing time glow bowling!!

Week 19 - Jan 26th - 30th 2026
This week during our Fundations literacy time we learned to match and print the upper and lower case letters, Q,R,S,T,U,V,W,X,Y,Z as well as putting letters in alphabetical order and tapping CVC words for reading and writing. We also incorporate a lot of hands on games to reinforce Fundations concepts. We created success criteria for writing (a check list) so we can check our work like good writers do!

During oral discussion we told everyone our favourite character from the book we read last week. We wrote the answers on the board using the sight word "the" and hearing the initial consonant in the word.
When we write our morning message we can use sight words and resources around the classroom to help us and we can tap out sounds in the words we don't know!

We choose to build together! This is our monster!
We can match letters with the initial sounds in the pictures we see.
We developed a list of success criteria for writing. This list will help guide us when we are writing!
Our sign in question asked us to predict how many snowflakes were in the jar. We wrote down our guesses then used a number line to record our answers. We discussed the reason that no one guessed the lower numbers!
We can see numbers in different arrays. We matched the cards that had the same amount.π

We are working together to write a sentence to tell about winter activities.

We pretended a piece of paper was our feelings. Mrs. LeClair used examples of unkind words. Every time she did we crinkled our paper to show how our feelings would be crinkled when people say unkind things.
Mrs. LeClair used examples of kind words. Everytime she did we started to flatten our piece of paper. We noticed that even when it was flat again it still had wrinkles! This is what happens when we say unkind things, the wrinkles stay in your heart. Our plan is to only use kind words in KA!π
We played a game of musical count!
When the music stopped we used the objects at the tables to create a group of a given number.
Each table had a different number. This helped us move our bodies and count!
We solved these math sentences using the count on from the biggest number strategy. We each had a turn to write an answer.π
Week 18 - Jan 19th - 24th 2026
This week during our Fundations literacy time we learned to match and print the upper and lower case letters, I,J,K,L,M,N,O,P as well as putting letters in alphabetical order and tapping CVC words for reading and writing. We also incorporate a lot of hands on games to reinforce Fundations concepts.

We used a block graph to record the answers to our morning sign in question. We discussed the results and sounded out the words more or less using phonetic spelling. (writing the sounds we hear)

They use finger spaces, uppercase letters at the beginning of a sentence, a period at the end of a sentence and they read the sentence to make sure it looks and sounds right.π

We took a vote on which we would rather wear. We wrote our name under the word. We looked at the graph and predicted which had more and less then we counted the names and recorded the answers using numerals and the number word. More people would rather wear mittens!

Out door painting was fun so we asked to experiment again! This time we made a birthday cake! Look at all the beautiful coloured icing.π
For the morning question we predicted how many blocks would fit in the mitten.
We read our answers then put the blocks in the mitten to check our answers. We managed to fit 17 blocks in the mitten!!
We listened to the story "The Mitten" by Jan Brett. We talked about the pictures and predicted what we think would happen next. We determined it was a fiction book! After reading the book we re told the story using the questions, Who?, Where?, What?.
We sorted characters based on if they were in the book or not.
Mrs. LeClair wrote 7 lower case letters on the flip chart. We had 1 min to look at them then she covered them up. We had to remember the letters she had written. We remembered them all!π
Mrs. LeClair tapped out 3 sounds then we had to blend them and say the word. We got 8 correct! She thinks we will get 10 next time we play the game.π
We did mitten math! We are learning that a pair of mittens need to look the same.
We added dots using bingo dabbers and wrote the math sentence to match!
We are working on counting, writing a number as 2 parts and printing numerals.
We played counting the dots on the domino's and matching them to the correct numeral on the mitten. We took turns!
We got to play Tommy's game on Fair Share Friday. It was fun taking turns and trying to balance the blocks with our friends! Thanks for sharing Tommy!π
Week 17 - Jan 11th - 15th 2026
This week during our Fundations literacy time we learned to match and print the upper and lower case letters, A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H as well as putting letters in alphabetical order and tapping CVC words for reading and writing.

We played the game "boom,clap". When Mrs. LeClair says boom, slap your knees, when she says clap, clap your hands, when she says a sound identify the letter that corresponds to it. This was lots of fun!!
We are practicing cutting and glueing chains to create hanging snowmen.

During child centred free play we created slushies using sensory items and went round the class selling them!
We played a game of hide the snowman under the cup.
Someone hid it while the rest closed their eyes then we had to guess by saying the numeral on the cup it was under. We took turns to hide the snowman.
We are creating imaginative play and dialogue at the puppet theatre.
We created a ship for our cars together! Lots of talk and collaboration.π

We read the book, "A snowman" with partners then had to retell it in order using the pictures on the board! We have good memories!

We retold a story with 4 pages by putting them back together in story order.

During free choice play students played a game that we did as a whole group yesterday. Repeating activities help solidify concepts.

Week 16 - Jan 5th - 9th 2026
Happy New Year to all my friends and their families in KAπ This week we started Unit 2 in our Fundations literacy program. This unit we will be learning to recognize and print all the uppercase letters of the alphabet and learning the tapping strategy for reading and writing. We use our first 3 fingers to tap each sound in a CVC word then blend the sounds together to read/write the word. Example - c-a-t - cat. CVC words are words that have 2 consonants and a vowel that create a word.

We say "good morning" to each other as we pass the heart around! We chose to continue to use the heart rather than the spoon.

We are building tower of a given number. Pick an uno card and show the number using the cube a links.
We can count how many letters are in our name then build a snowman to represent the number. We wrote a letter on each snowball.
We added details to our snowmen and put them on the door to welcome visitors!
We learned to sing a poem. There are rhyming words in it as well as sight words and punctuation.
We can use our magic fingers to help us read as we point to each word!
We are learning the "tapping" strategy to sound out CVC words.
We learned to make balls with play dough.
We squished the balls as we said each sound in a CVC word like "sat".
We wrote our answers to the morning questions then recorded our answers. More people in KA like snow!
Luke wrote a morning message. We recognized all the things that Luke did that good writers do! He remembered an uppercase letter at the beginning of a sentence, finger spaces between his words, periods at the end of each sentence and that writing tells us somethingπ
We discussed character traits and wrote down an "I am" statement that we thought was our best character trait.
We choose to write words from our environment during play and talk about them with our friends.
We are creative! We build together while learning about balance, problem solving and discussing our ideas.

We read a book about Pete the cat making snow angels. We went out to our out door classroom and made our own snow angels.
We learned that wood can freeze to the ground in the winter! We worked together to try and move it!

Week 4 - Sept 29th - Oct 3rd 2025Β
This week in Fundations we learned 2 vowels! i and u. The key word for i is itch and the key word for u is up. We are working on printing these letters using the fundations verbal path and connecting the sound each letter makes.
We also recognized Truth and Reconciliation day and that Every Child Matters! We took our teddy bears to the teddy bear clinic put on by the nursing students from UPEI and took a trip on the bus to the apple orchard where we saw blue berries, grapes and picked apples as well as taking a walk through the woods. This week in KA, Echo taught us 2 new letters! m and n. They are both plane line letters, which means we start printing them on the plane line! The key word for m is man and the key word for n is nut. We are also learning that we can write what we say using letters and words and that we can form a sentence!

Week 2 - Sept 15th - 19th 2025
This week Echo the owl introduced us to 2 new letters. b and f. They are both sky line letters, which means we print them starting at the skyline! The key word for b is bat and the key word for f is fun. We practised our drill sounds warm up by reviewing the letter t, already taught as well as how we hold a pencil/marker and what writing position at our chairs looks like. We are also learning about words that rhyme including songs and stories with rhyming words in them! We have been drawing in our drawing books and learning letter identification through letter based activities and art. On Friday we had an assembly and got to meet the Earth Rangers, they taught us about all kinds of animals and projects that Earth Rangers do to take care of the earth! Week 1 - Sept 8th - 12th 2025
What a great first week! We got to meet new friends, play with new toys, play outside, go to gym, music and library and establish respectful expectations and routines.π We met Echo the owl and baby Echo. They help us learn our letters and sounds for reading and writing. They are very soft and cuddly and watch us from their nest when they aren't teaching.π¦ This week in Fundations we learned about the lines we write on and how to sit in writing position. We also learned to print the lower case letter t. The keyword to help us remember t is "top".
