Week 38 - June 23rd - 26th
Congratulations KA, we have now completed Unit 5 in the Fundations literacy program! We have also come to the end of our kindergarten journey together! I hope everyone has an amazing summer๐๐ Below are some activities we did to finish off our year! Anita๐

We played the game - Swat the trick word! We can write amazing morning messages that tell us lots of information.
We remeasured our height. We found that from September to June that everyone in KA grew taller!
We were busy creating a retirement card for Mrs. Cameron, our VP.
We all signed the card.
We presented it to Mrs. Cameron at the end of year assembly.๐
We made streamers to wave as we cheered in a parade down the hallway for Mrs. Cameron.๐
We like to ask our friends questions and record them.
We can use objects to help us add two numbers together.

By measuring ourselves we were able to determine that we all grew during the kindergarten year. We can write our answer to the sign in question in different ways.

Week 37 - June 16th - 20th
This week we completed Unit 5 in our Fundations literacy program! Well done KA! You haveย worked really hard and learned some good reading and writing strategies.

On the weekend Mrs. LeClair mowed the grass at our outdoor classroom. She got more wood as some got broken over night. We started from scratch to make a new one! We challenged ourselves to create an inclusive classroom where no one has their back to anyone else.ย

We talked about the different provinces and territories in Canada. We noticed that the word Canada is a pattern!

We are working diligently on learning our trick words in a snap rather than trying to tap out! This is somewhat challenging for us as we have practiced our decoding, tapping strategy for everything else we sometimes do it automatically.ย
Today we had to create an oral sentence with a trick word in it. The cute kids made more sentences than lovely LeClair.๐คฃ We also read in our heads then out loud the sentence ... Tom had a quiz. Well done KA.๐

In Fundations this week we continued to review trick words, scoop phrases for reading fluency and develop fluency in creating sentences.

We read the story of Jack and the bean stalk and each planted a bean seed. We predicted how long it would take for the beans to grow. Less than or more than 10 days?

We continue to learn through the author study of Joy Cowley and her main character, Mrs. Wishy Washy! Below are some examples of our learning.
We have nearly completed Unit 4 in the Fundations literacy program and are becoming more fluent in tapping for reading and writing. We are seeing digraphs everywhere and are enthusiastic to share our observations! We are also starting to recognize the trick words taught and understanding why they are considered trick words! We celebrated Earth Day this week! Recognizing how important the Earth and everything on it is to us.๐ We made a pledge to do better!
We learned about a new author. Her name is Joy Cowley. She writes about the character Mrs. Wishy Washy who lives on a farm. We had lots of discussion about what we know about farms. This week we completed Unit 3 in our Fundations literacy program. We showed what we learned and started Unit 4. During Unit 4 we will continue to work on fluency of reading, reading and writing CVC words, and learning trick words. We will also start to learn about digraphs. Digraphs are 2 letters put together to make 1 sound. (th,wh,ck,sh,ch)

This was an exciting week for KA as we hosted our families for a Spring Tea, shared our learning through our portfolio's with them and presented an Art Exhibit to them. We collected donations and decided to give the money to buy food gift cards for the homeless. We also had a Neon Dance to raise money for Easter Seals. Due to a school cancellations on Valentine's Day we celebrated love, kindness and friendship this Wednesday instead. As this is KA's classroom culture anyway it wasn't too hard to convince anyone that we should celebrate!๐ We also planned and prepared to celebrate 100 days in kindergarten. This week we started Unit 3 in the Fundations literacy program. This Unit 3 builds on the foundational skills of reading and writing that we have already learned in Unit 1 and 2 through letter, sound association and the tapping strategy. We will also learn more about characters, settings and story telling.

This week we continued to practice our tapping and decoding strategy for reading and writing. We also learned to recognize and use the verbal path for printing, I,J,K,l,M,N,O,P and worked on alphabetical order.

We matched snowflakes that are the same! We predicted how many snowflakes were in the jar for our sugn in activity.
We had a snowball fight with big cotton balls with sight words on them. When we heard the word stop we had to stop throwing snow balls and read the sight word on the ball we had. It was a lot of fun!!!!

This week we started Unit 2 in the Fundations literacy program. In unit 2 we are learning to tap individual sounds and blend them together as well as learning the uppercase letters of the alphabet and alphabetical order.

We are working on recognizing the difference between a lowercase b and d. " before we make a d we have to make a c." If we see a c first the letter must be d, if we see a line first the letter must be a b.

This week we celebrated the last school week of 2024 and finished unit 1 in the Fundations literacy program. We worked on the letters q and z. We learned that q doesn't go anywhere without the best friend u! The keyword for qu is queen and the key word for z is zebra. qu is a plane line round letter and z is a plane line slide letter.

This week was a short in school learning week but I'm sure there was lots of learning going on at home too while teachers were at their annual teachers convention! This week we started learning about the lower case letters e and r. e is a plane line round special letter and r is a plane line letter. The key word for e is Ed and the key word for r is rat. We also worked with our magnetic letter boards to segment and blend letters to read CVC words like bat. These words were created using letters we have already learned! Way to go KA readers!
We also recognized Remembrance Day by creating a wreath and poppy fields as well as participating in a Remembrance Day assembly. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and a peaceful Remembrance Day.๐ Anita

Week 6 - Oct 14th - 18th
This week Echo taught us the letters a and g. They are both plane line round letters just like c and o. We discovered that if we can make c and o then we can make a and g! a is a vowel and g is a consonant. The key word for a is apple and the key word for g is game.
We also explored everything pumpkin! Reading, writing,, weighing, measuring, dissecting, creating, counting, sorting, patterning! We can integrate learning into our interests and play! Below are examples of things that we did. ๐๐๐ Have a super weekend! Anita

Week 5 - Oct 7th - 11th

We are also working on the sight words, I, like, the. Sight words are words we often see in books and use in our writing. They become familiar words.๐

We played a rhyming generation game! Pull the card out of the sparkle bag and try to think of a word that rhymes with the picture card.
We have a question of the day at circle time to help us with our phonological awareness and oral language skills.

We created fiction turkeys to represent Thanksgiving. We read stories about Thanksgiving and watched a factual video about turkeys!
We know that turkeys can fly but as they get older they tend to walk or hop more than fly. Our turkeys are flying around our classroom!
We know the words , yes, no. We can use them to determine what we would like. We voted for an audio book. We discussed which had more votes and less and counted to check our answer.
During play we are transferring our learning. A friend made a resource for O using the key word Octopus!

Week 4 - Oct 1st - 4th
This week Echo taught us the letters i and u. They are both vowels and lane line letters! The key word for i is itch and the key word for u is umbrella. Every week we review the letters taught using the large letter cards, the standard cards, printing the letters using the verbalizations and using our magnetic letter boards. We also model sentence structure, punctuation and idea's as well as comprehension, retelling a story and creating pictures to match stories.

This week Echo taught us the letters m and n. They are both plane line letters! The key word for m is man and the key word for n is nut. We also worked on reading sentences, focusing on upper case letters at the beginning and punctuation at the end as well as acting out and re telling a story about Echo being hungry.

Echo taught us the letters b and f. b and f are skyline letters. The key word for b is bat and the key word for f is fun. We practiced sky writing the letters then printing them in our notebooks. We discussed other words that start with the letter b and f and the sound they make.

Week 1 - What a great start to the school year! We have made new friends and have transitioned well into our new learning space.๐
This week we met Momma Echo the Owl๐ฆ and Baby Echo Owl. They are going to help us learn our letters, key words and sounds for reading and writing. We learned how to hold our pencil and how to sit in writing position.โ We learned the names of the lines we use when printing. Sky line, plane line, grass line and worm line. We also learned the letter t. The key word that helps us remember the letter t is top. We also learned how to print a lower case t. t is a sky line letter, it starts at the sky line, down to the grass line and cross it on the plane line.ย
