Below are some of the activities we have done this week in KA. Enjoy your weekend! Anita
Mrs. LeClair wrote her morning message but she didn't use all the writing strategies we know! We helped her edit her work so it looked and sounded right! We know that we need an upper case letter at the beginning of a sentence, punctuation at the end and we have to use the right words so the sentence makes sense! "It in Thursday" did not make sense! so we changed it to "It is Thursday". We are also working on writing math sentences to match our objects!
We made a class book for our math centre.
We had 10 decorations. We placed some on the tree and some off the tree.
We wrote a math sentence to match our picture. There are lots of ways to show 10 as 2 parts!
We have been choosing to colour with our friends during centre time! We have been writing labels to go with our pictures using our temporary spelling strategy and writing our names to show the author and illustrator:) We decided we would like to display them in our classroom so we created a mural:) We hope you like it!

We discussed how we can choose to be responsible:)
We used magnifying glasses to see our finger prints then created finger print graphs using ink. We learned that every persons finger print is different!
We used our nose to smell vinegar and grapefruit body cream. Some of us liked the smell of vinegar and some liked the smell of the body cream. It is okay to like different smells:) We wrote about what we like to smell. Some of us used our word resources and some used our temporary spelling strategy!
We are learning to draw things using step by step instructions. We learned to draw a tree!
We learned how to draw a house! We can label our drawings by giving them a title;)
We learned to draw Santa! We love Santa!
We created Reindeer:) We traced our hands to make the antlers! How many Reindeer do you see?
We created holiday trees using rectangles and dots. We noticed that the rectangles got smaller, the dots were less at the top than the bottom and that it is a pattern! This was tricky because we had to think about the position of objects in space!
Happy Holidays from KA!
We followed visual directions to create these tree decorations for our door to welcome friends to KA:)
Week 12 - Nov 22nd - 25th 2021
We continued to explore our 5 senses this week and are developing an awareness of how our senses work, when we use each one and how they inform our decisions by sending messages to our brain! We have been drawing and writing about our senses:)
During Fundations we started learning about the consonant Gg and the vowel Aa. The key word for g is game and the key word for a is apple. We learned that both these letters are plane line round letters as they start on the plane line just like o and c:) We also talked about how we write an a (a) and g (g) and how we see it in print (these look different but are the same letter). We have been learning to extend the vowel sound until the end of our breath:)
We played I spy words and coloured and read a new mini book for our book box:) We are working on identifying and noticing initial consonants in words. Find the word fish, it begins with what letter?
We like Echo and Baby Echo. They help us learn our letters and sounds!
We followed step by step instructions to draw Echo!
Echo is an owl:)
We have been learning about how pictures tell a story. Then we can add words. We told the story "Echo finds dinner" using pictures and words:)
We read the story together and circled some words from the text:)
We enjoy using the white boards and displaying them as resources for our friends. We are learning to title and label our work!
We discuss and recognize how to be kind, thoughtful and caring. What does it look like in our classroom?
In Fundations we are working on the letters Aa and Gg.
We read the big book "911 Quack" together then we used the little books to re read the story in pairs:)
We did a taste test! Before we tasted we used our other senses to see if we could determine what it was. We looked, we smelled, we listened and we touched. We had to taste to tell which one was salt and which was sugar. We used our 5 senses!
We wrote about what we like to taste!
We can read books about our senses!
We touched and created using play clay!
We wrote about what we like to touch:)
We read big books about our 5 senses:)
We talked about how a story has to make sense so the pictures have to go in the right order to tell the story. We worked in groups with story cards to tell stories in the correct sequence. We collaborated!
We worked on the number 6 and showed it in different ways!
Week 11 - Nov 16th - 19th 2021
We have been exploring our 5 senses this week and connecting them to the world around us:) We are very enthusiastic to share our learnings and observations! We read lots of books to help us understand and learn about our senses. Below are some examples of our experiences this week:)
During Fundations we started learning about the consonant Cc and the vowel Oo. The key word for c is cat and the key word for o is octopus. We learned that both these letters are plane line round letters as they start on the plane line:) We have been learning to extend the vowel sound until the end of our breath:)
We created binoculars and telescopes so we could spy things in the classroom using our sense of sight. We can see with our eyes!
We worked together on a "We see cars" poster. We used markers to create colourful designs and scissors to cut them out. We had rich discussions and conversations about what we were doing and our goals for the activity. In KA we enjoy playing with cars!
We are exploring our senses! We see and we hear!
We wrote a sentence in our Fundations journal to show something we see!
We are working on the letters Cc and Oo.
This is our Fundations resource wall:)
This is Echo the owl. She helps us learn our letters and sounds and she watches us from her perch on the calendar:)
This is Echo and Baby Echo!
We created books for our book boxes. We are focusing on the words "I,see,a" as well as noticing periods at the end of sentences! We played I spy words in our books and read them independently! We are super readers!
We used our sense of hearing by playing sound bingo! We played on teams and collaborated:) We had to identify sounds we might hear in our environment and connect them to the pictures on our bingo cards. We used 3 senses! We hear, we see and we touch!
We recorded what we can hear. We are starting to sound out unknown words. We stretch out the sounds and write the letter sounds we hear. This is temporary spelling and encourages risk taking with support:) We illustrated what we can hear to match our words:)
We worked on the number 5. We can show 5 in different ways! The word five, the numeral 5, 5 tally marks, 5 on a ten frame, 5 objects and 5 fingers. We can draw 5 cars! We also used cube a links to play a game of 123 snap. We broke a tower of 5 into two parts. 2 and 3 or 0 and 5 or 4 and 1.
Week 10 - Nov 8th - 12th 2021
It was a short 3 day week. We continued to have discussions about the weather as well as participating in games, songs, art, writing and drawing. Below are photos of some of the activities we completed:)
During Fundations we started learning about 2 vowels, Ii and Uu. The key word for i is itch and the key word for u is up. We learned that both these letters are plane line letters as they start on the plane line:) We will need lots of practice as these vowel sounds are very similar. We have been learning to extend the vowel sound until the end of our breath:)
Mrs LeClair is at the teachers convention on Friday and Monday so have a great long weekend and I will see KA again on Tuesday! Anita
We followed a color by number guide to complete this activity. We read the color words and recognized numbers 1-4. We are doing a great job developing our fine motor control by staying inside the lines and cutting out a shape:)
We used dot stickers to create groups of "more than" a given number.
So important for us to remember:)
We Will Remember Them.
Our 2 new large letter cards. They are vowels!
We discussed what the bear should wear for the different kinds of weather while we played this game!
We discussed our favourite kinds of weather and then wrote about them. We remembered that a picture tells a story and that our writing and picture have to match:)
We used the guided writing strategy. Mrs. LeClair modelled the writing and then we wrote it. We used our "Super Spacer" who help us remember to put finger spaces in between our words. We also remembered that Fundations has taught us to put an uppercase letter at the beginning of a sentence and a period at the end:) We are doing wonderful work!!
We created rainy day pictures. We tore up white tissue to make the clouds and used silver and blue jewels to represent the rain drops. We then recorded how many blue and how many silver rain drops and how many altogether:)
We cut up the title of our work into 3 words. "Rain drop math" and then put it back together on the top of our page. We looked at the initial consonants to figure out which word was which. R for rain, d for drop, m for math. Well done KA!
Week 9 - Nov 1st - 5th 2021
This week we focused our learning through hands on learning activities, creative expression and group discussions around showing and recording numbers in different ways and the weather. Below are some examples of our learning.
During our Fundations time with Echo and Baby Echo we learned the letters Nn and Mm (and reviewed Tt, Bb, Ff). They are plane line letters as they start at the plane line. We practiced writing these letters, read stories and discussed words that begin with these letters, used our magnetic letter boards to find the letters and learned the key words. The key word for n is nut and the key word for m is man. We also talked about how words form sentences and that we need an upper case letter at the beginning of a sentence and a period at the end. Baby Echo helped us read sentences! Echo told us the same story as last week about her day in the forest but then she acted it out while we re told the story! We had to think carefully about the story Echo told us and the details to make sure the story made sense. We did a great job!
During social studies and character building we have been discussing solving problems. Mrs. LeClair often asks us " How can you solve that problem?" " What can you do to solve the problem?" It is amazing what KA can do individually and collaboratively to solve a problem. It gives us the opportunity to become more independent, resilient and confident and therefore more willing to take risks:) Well done KA!!!
Have a great weekend, Anita
We read every day:)
We use our 5 senses to explore the world around us!
These are the large letter cards we review each day with Echo!
We are learning how to zip our jackets so we can become more independent:) It is important to zip your jacket to keep warm:)
We are working on the beginning sounds in words and attaching letters to pictures to show our learning!
We created monsters!!! Monster starts with M!
We read the words of each body part and used a numeral to show how many:)
We are developing creative expression and showing an audience! Are you scared?
We used bingo dabbers to create groups LESS than the given number shown:)
We glued on fall leaves to create groups the SAME as the given number shown:)
We have been discussing expected behaviour and unexpected behaviour in our class and with our friends. We also talked about how some choices are safe and some are unsafe. We played thumbs up and thumbs down when we discussed each set of pictures:)
We used a number cube to play this game! First we did it together and Mrs. LeClair modelled it then we did it independently. We are showing numbers in different ways!
We talk about the weather each day and how it affects the decisions we make. The Ambassador does the weather report at circle time:) This week we read a big book titled "Who cares about the weather?" We noticed it has a question mark in the title! We each created a weather wheel to use at home to show the weather each day!
We can use tally marks to record our answers. Mrs. LeClair asked "Which one would you like me to read first?" We each told her our choice and she recorded our answers using tally marks. We had to solve the problem when two books had the same amount! One student volunteered to change their answer! What a bucket filler!!
We recorded our own answers using tally marks! We are learning to use what we learn:)
Week 8 - Oct 25th - 29th 2021
This week we focused our learning through hands on learning activities, creative expression and group discussions around Halloween. Below are some examples of our learning.
During our Fundations time with Echo and Baby Echo we learned the letters Bb and Ff (and reviewed Tt). They are also sky line letters as they start on the sky line. We practiced writing these letters, read stories and discussed words that begin with these letters, used our magnetic letter boards to find the letters and learned the key words. The key word for b is bat and the key word for f is fun. We also talked about how words form sentences and that we need an upper case letter at the beginning of a sentence and a period at the end. Baby Echo helped us read sentences! Echo told us a story about a day in the forest. We listened very carefully and answered questions about the story afterwards to check our comprehension:) We are good listeners!
Have a Happy Halloween weekend! Anita
We worked on our fine motor control, creative expression and developing our concentration span and stamina.
We created a bat number line measuring tape. We had to cut it out and put it together in numerical order.
We used our bat measuring tape to measure objects in KA and record our findings on a data collection sheet. We also worked on printing our numbers:)
We have been learning about tally marks. We can use tally marks to show a number in a different way. We can match tally marks to numbers!
We can match numbers to objects that show the same amount.
We can collaborate in KA. We worked together to complete this tricky pumpkin puzzle!
We can read "I like" sentences and use pictures and initial consonants to figure out the words we don't know. We can use these words as resources in reading and writing!
We can play games at centre time:)
We can read messages and circle the words we know!
We painted our feet white then turned our foot print into a ghost!!! We read the rhyme together and then used what we know about words to sound out and spell what we like to eat as a treat! This is temporary spelling and encourages risk taking independently:)
More ghosts!! Don't be scared! LOL
Of course we talked a lot about Halloween and our costumes this week! We drew pictures of our costumes and completed a stem sentence to tell about it. We are learning that the picture tells the story and that the pictures and words need to match:)
We worked with a partner to colour a Halloween picture on the wall. We talked together about the colours we wanted to use, who was going to colour what and what the picture was about. Mrs. LeClair heard lots of rich conversations!
By standing to colour we worked on core strength and spatial awareness as we had to stand beside each other to colour:)
We created monsters!!! We named our monsters!! Some chose to name their monster after a friend and found the name through a resource in the classroom and some used temporary spelling to sound out the name!
We are working on 2 and 3 element patterns. We all got a bag with bats and spiders in it. We had to create a pattern using the materials in the bag! We are showing what we know about patterns!
We asked the question "Are you afraid of spiders?" to the whole class. We used our tally mark strategy to record the answers. We found that more of us were not afraid of spiders and less were afraid of spiders! We then wrote the data findings using numerals and drew a picture of a scary spider:)
We each had a bag of Halloween jelly beans! We had to match the colour word to the jelly beans and count how many. We looked at the first letter to help figure it out! We then recorded how many using numerals! Can you guess what we did with the jelly beans next ?!
Week 7 - Oct 18th - 22nd 2021
This week we focused our learning through gourds, pumpkins, Jack o lanterns, Halloween and Fall. Below are some of the many activities we did!
We started our Fundations program with our orientation week. We met Echo the owl and baby Echo who are helping us learn our letters and sounds. We learned how to sit and hold our marker ready to write. We learned the four lines in writing - sky line, plane line, grass line and worm line. We can point to them and name them! We learned the letter Tt. It is a skyline letter as we start by pointing to the sky line when writing the letter t. The key word for the letter t is "top".
Have a super weekend everyone! Anita
We explored gourds using our 5 senses. We wrote down our findings using describing words.
We created "My Pumpkin Seed, a Counting Story" We put it in our book box as a reading source.
We used a ten frame to show the number of seeds in the pumpkin.
We printed the numeral to match and learned the trick words " I, see"
We played the game, roll and draw a pumpkin. Each time you roll a number on the cube you draw a different part. Ex. roll a 1 - draw a nose
We discussed different emotions and expressions. We painted Jack O Lantern faces on paper pumpkins and completed the stem sentence- "My Jack O Lantern is...." with the word to match the face. We used tempory spelling and word approximations by writing the sounds we hear. Ex. Hape (happy)
We drew faces on our pumpkins:) We are very expressive!
We see lots of emotions in KA!
We created a pumpkin number line and practiced counting from a given number using the number line as a resource. Ex. Start at 4 and count to 10.
We sorted and compared our pumpkins and recorded the data we collected. We determined that we have more orange pumpkins and less white pumpkins.
We sorted picture cards based on the initial letter sound. We are letter detectives!
We created witches using our hand prints! We used a visual resource to put our picture together and added our own details:)
The KA classroom is ready for some spooky Halloween fun next week!!
Week 6 - Oct 11th - Oct 15th 2021
This week we focused our learning through Fall activities. This is done by forming literacy, numeracy, science, art and social studies connections to the world around us. Below are samples of activities and learnings in KA this week:) You will notice a reference to "tricky" words. This language is used in the new Fundations program to describe what used to be sight words or snap words. Have an amazing weekend! Anita
This is our "Fundations" corner! We are all ready to begin on Monday!
Echo the owl and Baby Echo can't wait to get started!!!
We used shiny leaves to create fall patterns:)
We put together the parts of an apple then used the seeds to represent the numeral on the apple.
We have been working on "filling each others buckets" with kindness and what it looks like and feels like when we are kind and unkind. We read the story "How full is your bucket".
We used a ten frame to represent the given number on the apple. Before completing this activity we played games, counted apples and did a large group matching apples and numbers activity.
We discussed the things we like to do in the fall and read a story about jumping in the leaves. We did a guided writing activity together and discussed sound/letter connections to sound out words and used "Super Spacer" to help remind us to place spaces between our words. We also talked about how the picture tells the story and that the reader needs to use the picture to help with the words. "In the fall I like to jump in the leaves" the picture has to be a person jumping in the leaves:)
We read a poem about Fall leaves. We focused on the tricky words, I, like, love, as well as the color words. We were word detectives and had to solve the mystery when Mrs. LeClair mixed up the sentences!
We counted objects and matched the numeral. We found a problem and collaborated together to solve it!! There were 7 pumpkins and no numeral 7 so we had to write it ourselves! Nice problem solving KA!
In the science centre we enjoyed searching for letters in the leaves in our sensory bin!
In the math centre we used acorns to fill our ten frames to match the number on the number cube:)
We have been creating little readers that focus on color words, counting and tricky words (I, like, see, is, it,) for our book boxes at school. We are starting to read these books independently and are empowered by our ability to produce and read books! KA's Rockstar Readers!
Week 5 - Oct 4th - 8th 2021
We spent this week working on letters and sounds, patterns and book making for our reading book boxes to foster independent reading. We also worked on needs and wants and had enthusiastic discussions! Below are pictures of some of our activities and learning this week:)
Have a Happy Thanksgiving:) Anita
We are learning about syllables in words and creating patterns.
How many syllables are in your name?
We coloured wooden pumpkins using two colours and creating patterns!
We used our playdough to make apples to correspond to the numeral on the apple basket:)
Creating sets of a given number.
We are developing our fine motor development by rolling and shaping playdough.
We tasted 3 kinds of apples and described how they looked and tasted and documented our findings. The yellow apple was the favourite!
We painted apple trees and numbered the apples. There are 10 apples hanging on the tree!
Happy Thanksgiving! Gobble Gobble!
We created "My fall tree". We cut up the sentence and put it back together!
We used our hands to make the tree trunk and our fingers to paint the fall leaves, Beautiful fall colours!

We cut out our favourite food!
We discussed our favourite colour:)
We used a numeral to show how old we are:)
We circled the snap words we know and sounded out the word "play" together!
We displayed our books in the hallway for everyone to see!
We used an "I like" sentence to tell our favourite colour and super spacer helped us with the spaces between our words. We drew a picture of something that is our favourite colour!
We drew Rhyming Monsters. We used rhyming clues to tell us which body part on our monster we needed to draw next! We love our monsters!
Week 3 - Sept 20th - 24th 2021
It was an exciting week in KA as we welcomed back some of our friends and enjoyed seeing smiling faces again! This week the majority of our activities connected to the letters of the alphabet and getting to know each other through play and learning together. Have a lovely weekend and we will see everyone back on Marvelous Monday! Anita
We sorted our names by first letters! Letter A has the most friends!
We read the story "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" and created our own name trees!
We sorted our names by how many letters are in our name! We noticed we have 2 friends with 7 letters and 1 with 3 letters. We also noticed that 6 letters had the most names!
We read the story "Alphabet Mystery". We discovered that little X was missing! We did a retell of the story the next day for a friend who was absent and we created our own flying alphabet pencils!
We drew our families in our blue journals:)
We made a chart to show who in KA has pets and who does not. We noticed that most children in KA have a pet:)
We talked about our families!! We discussed how they are different and the same, how many people are in our family and what we like to do together. We created a heart chart of all our family members and painted pictures of our families:)
We wrote a sentence to match our picture! "I like my pet."
