Colonel Gray Pre-IB

Grade 9 students who know that they would like to take the IB in Y11 and Y12 might consider pre-IB classes in grade 10. While not required, CG pre-IB classes provide students with provincial curriculum at an accelerated pace and with an aim to prepare students for the increased rigor in IB. They travel in a common cohort for three of their eight classes in grade 10 (English, Science and Mathematics). Their other four classes are with other provincial students (CEO, French, and 2 electives).

Students will be required to submit an application for a placement in CG IB prep courses and respond to a written prompt. Please note that applying for pre-IB is not the same as registering for classes at Colonel Gray. You will still need to register to attend our school. Pre-IB is a year-long commitment and adjustments are not made to a student's schedule between semesters.

Colonel Gray Pre-IB Facts

  • The Colonel Gray pre-IB cohort is limited to two group of 30 students each.

  • CG Pre-IB is not a prerequisite for IB.

  • Quite a few students have taken regular provincial curriculum in Y10 and went on to be very successful in IB programming.

  • Enrollment in the CG Pre-IB programme does not guarantee a placement in Y11 IB.

Colonel Gray Pre-IB and EAL

Most students who have just finished EAL D courses most often benefit more from provincial courses rather than pre-IB courses because the pace and content can be overwhelming and detrimental to assessment results – particularly at the beginning of grade 10. Though finished with EAL programming, most students benefit from the develop language skills in regular programming. They can be provided with support to help them prepare for the expectations of the IB DP without risking academic performance in pre-IB classes.

Physics: We currently do not offer physics IB classes. If you are a student who is considering IB and also need physics, you should register for provincial physics (Physics 521) in grade ten. Physics 521 will be scheduled in the second semester of grade ten and students will take pre-IB math in first semester as preparation. If you need physics beyond a grade 11 credit and choose IB, see the coordinator for several options of ways to get grade 12 physics while in IB (we do not offer IB physics). The course page on this website outlines the options.
