We did it! Our first week back in school! It was so nice to get to meet all your children. I must tell you, I truly look forward to working with each and every one of them. They all help to make a truly lovely group to work with.
We are learning a little more about each other every day and I would like to enlist your help with this. We have read ‘Chrysanthemum’ by Kevin Henkes. In case you are not familiar with it, it is about a little mouse who loves her name….until she starts school. Her feelings change throughout the story, and it ends with her loving her special name again. We have used this story as a launch for a couple writing activities, and now here is one for you, the parents!
Please write a letter to your child’s class (2B) to tell us how and why you chose the name you did for your child. Tell us a little bit about your child as well! Perhaps something funny they did as a younger child…things you and your family enjoy doing together… favorite things…etc. I would love it if you could send me a baby picture of your child to my email address ktmcaleer@edu.pe.ca (or hard copy) so that the children may attempt guessing who it is! A family picture is also requested. You can start sending these at any time now. Thank you for your help!
NEWS / REMINDERS
· Lunch Programs – Provincial and school lunch programs began today! A mass email was sent to all families to review this process.
· Class Photos – Picture day to be announced at a later date.
· Water Bottles – Please send your child to school with water bottle already filled. They are able to be refilled as needed, but having them already filled on arrival will help tremendously.
· New Drop-in COVID Screening – Health PEI has expanded access to testing with new drop-in, no-appointment screening clinics established across the province. Testing is offered on a first-come, first serve basis. The drop-in option for Charlottetown is as follows:
Eastlink Centre Parking Lot
Monday – Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday – 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
· A link to our class Google site will be added to the school website soon to give you easier access. Please call the main office in these instances. Parents are not to enter the building. Administration will help transport your child to you.
· Home Reading – We are not permitted at this time to send reading books home with the children. We will be providing you with a RAZ Kids account to support reading at home. Students are still permitted to take home library books. (When the library books are returned they are quarantined for 72 hours before becoming available to another student.)
· Children who are reading a favorite series or chapter book at home are welcome to bring it to school for reading during class reading time. They will keep it in their own desk and it will not be shared with others.
· Homework will begin next week. It will consist of spelling and reading. Daily home reading will be recorded and initialed each evening by an adult. The children receive 2 tickets for every book read. Reading is not expected on weekends, but they have the option of reading on weekends. (Weekend reading is worth 3 tickets!) This is a class reward/incentive system where once a child has collected 50 tickets, they can trade the tickets in for a small prize. They have other ways of earning tickets as well in class.
PLEASE SEND ME YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS TO ktmcaleer@edu.pe.ca so that I know I have a current address. Thank you.
Have a lovely week, everyone! Do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions.
