MATH
We continue to practice counting in different ways and represent numbers to 100 in different ways. We also continue to work on mental math strategies. You will find information regarding this concept in the blue handout that is in your child's homework book. The two main strategies we are working on right now are Neighbors and Almost Neighbors. For these strategies to be quick and successful, you must know your doubles!
Neighbors (Doubles plus 1) - Any two numbers that live beside each other on the number line are 'neighbors'. Example: 7+8 is the same as 7+(7+1), so this is the same as doubles (7+7) plus 1 more! Strategy: double the smallest number and then add one more!
Almost Neighbors (Double plus 2 ) - These two numbers are almost neighbors on the number line, there is just one number coming between them. Example: 7+9. Take one from 9 and put it with the 7....now you have 8 on each side, and you can easily use your doubles to get your answer. Strategy: Double the number that is missing in the middle!
Using doubles addition strategy for subtraction!
Adding and subtracting double digit numbers with the use of manipulatives (rods and units)
READING
Continue to read from book bag, books at home, or Razkids. Continue to return book bags on last school day of each week.
WRITING
We will be moving into Narrative writing formally after Christmas. Until then we will have interesting writing prompts, focusing on making 'super sentences' (interesting sentences that provide interesting and/or important detail), penmanship, spacing, beginning our sentences with an uppercase letter and ending our sentences with punctuation.
COVID Update from the PSB
Parents are responsible to notify the school of the reason for the absence(s) from school.
Families play an important role in slowing the spread of COVID-19 and ensuring that students can access educational services. It will be important for you to monitor your child’s health each day before sending them to school and to keep them home when they feel ill. If your child exhibits any of the symptoms listed below and they are unusual for your child or are not related to an existing condition (e.g. seasonal allergies), parents/guardians are asked to visit a drive-through testing site, call 811 or your health care provider and report any symptoms of COVID-19 to the school.
Whether it is cold, flu, pink eye, coronavirus or other illness, students should stay home if they are ill so that illness is not spread through schools.
A negative COVID test does not mean an individual is ready to go back to school or work. If a student has tested negative for COVID-19 but still displays mild symptoms, please consider the following.
Students and staff should not return to school or work:
· if they have on-going fever or chills
· if symptoms are not improving or there are new symptoms
Students and staff could return to school or work:
if they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication, e.g. Tylenol
if they have a runny nose, congestion, or other mild symptoms they can return to school provided they are well enough to engage in learning or their job
if mild symptoms are improving and there are no new symptoms
if they continue to practice good hand hygiene and cough/sneeze etiquette (e.g. cough or sneeze into your arm or a tissue)
In addition, if you have traveled outside regions as per the current CPHO guidelines, you are asked to declare this to the school, and follow the current CPHO measures in place at the time (e.g. self-isolation).
Symptoms of COVID-19 include:
new or worsening cough
shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
fever
chills
sore throat
runny nose, sneezing, congestion
headache
muscle aches
unusual fatigue
acute loss of sense of smell or taste
Good Evening,
The letter and package mentioned in the last post will be sent home at a later date.
Here is some fun news from our music teachers!
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Our students have been learning fun Christmas dances and poems during music class this month to share with you at home. If you would like to access the Christmas videos please visit our Music Google Site that is shared below. We are missing the concert buzz this year but feel free to make this special at home by getting dressed up and creating a mini concert at home :).
Happy Holidays,
Mrs. MacDonald and Mrs. MacLean
