March 9th-13th
Hello everyone,
This week the class will explore eight new glued sounds in Fundations and continue to practice the trick words introduced in Unit 7. You can find these under the Fundations Practice tab. Glued sounds are the green cards. In math, we will practice more story problems, and I will add some to the site after the March break for you to practice at home. In writing, we will finish up our nonfiction writing this week so we can move onto persuasive after the break. Friday your child is invited to come to school dressed comfy and ready for a relaxing, fun day! They can bring in a game to share with friends or a favorite toy. A reminder to return all permission forms for the skate Tuesday and all unsold fundraising tickets. Have a great week!

February 23rd-27th
Hello everyone,
Today we took part in Winter wellness day by doing yoga in the snow and sculpting volcanoes. It was a fun way to enjoy this beautiful winter day! It’s Book Fair time again! 1D’s viewing day to create a wish list will be February 24th at 10:45 with our purchasing day as March 2nd and March 5th during PTs. Next week we will finish up all assessments. The class has been working very hard on preparing their portfolio for you to see while at the parent teacher interview. Once assessments are done, we will jump back into Unit 6 Fundations, addition/subtraction in math and continue with nonfiction writing.
Happy 100th day!
We will soon be celebrating your child’s 100th day in Grade One.We have been counting and keeping track of the days each morning. On our 100th day, we will be doing special activities all daylong! At Sherwood we will be celebrating this special day on Thursday, February 26th.
To help your child better understand the concept of one hundred we would like each child to prepare a small poster-type project representing the number 100, or bring in 100 objects in a Ziploc-type bag.
They may use anything from home that is light weight and easy to count and glue on paper such as pasta shapes, buttons, foam shapes, pompoms, cheerios etc. They could make a necklace, a Lego creation with 100 blocks (in a bag), or prepare a bag with 100 objects, for example. We will be displaying our creations on a bulletin board outside the classroom.
Please send this project to school anytime between February 17th-25th before our celebration.
Let your imaginations run wild, be creative and have fun counting to one hundred!

Cash Draw
This week was also the kick off to our Cash Draw and students have been busy selling tickets already! A great big Thank You to our friends at DALMAC - as they graciously sponsored the printing of all our tickets!
We already have over 150 sold tickets returned to the school and we know many students have plans to sell this weekend. Given the demand for tickets we have a few important notes we would love to share with you!
If you are unable to sell your tickets please return them ASAP so we can give them to a family interested in more! We don’t want any families to feel pressured to sell their tickets, lots of families have the capacity to sell extra!
If you have only sold a portion of your tickets but are unable to sell the remaining please return the cash and unsold tickets ASAP.
If you have sold your tickets and would like more please return the envelope with the cash and a note you would like additional tickets. No additional tickets will be sent home until Wednesday February 18.
Some students were delayed in receiving their tickets and with the even longer weekend for students we have made the decision to extend the Ticket Return Date to MONDAY MARCH 2!
The draw will still take place on Wednesday March 11, 2026!
Thank you so much for your support - let's finish this playground together!
I hope you all have a great weekend!

Hello everyone,
February is moving quickly! This week we will focus on check-ins as we get ready to share all our growth and goals with you during parent teacher interviews. Our PAWS calm down and movement areas are beginning to see some action. These are important areas in our space that allow children to quiet big emotions in positive ways using strategies they can take with them out into their daily lives.

February 9th-12th
Hello everyone,
We are now beginning assessments in preparation for report cards/parent teacher interviews. Our schedule will be impacted a little, and the class will have more independent time while I work in small groups or individually with students. They will be reviewing skills they will be assessed on by participating in a combination of learning centers, games or worksheets. We will continue to learn about owls, complete Fundations Unit 6 and explore subtraction/addition story problems and number sentences. Something new I added to the classroom to help support our PAWS Matrix learning is a calm down area and a movement area. These areas are a choice for all students but there may be times when I give a break card to specific students whose bodies are extra wiggly and are unable to focus. These students may need to leave during group a lesson, and the other children know that it’s not an escape, nor is it unfair that they’re “playing” and others are not. We are learning that everyone has different levels of energy in their body/brain and may need more movement than other people to be successful in their learning. Please assure your little person that all lessons will be completed by all children, but that the journey may look different for some students. 1D has been focusing on being a good citizen since September, and this is one more way that we can help support members in our community by ensuring everyone gets what they need to be successful learners. Your child’s voice is heard, and we work hard to ensure that needs are met each day while we learn to distinguish needs from wants. If you have any questions, please let me know.
A few dates to note:
Skate Day is March 10th at 1:35-2:05 for Gr. K & 1
Feb.12th Valentines Day celebration (no party but we’ll have fun!) Please no food treats. Wear red, pink or hearts.
Feb.13th PD Day No school for the students

February 2nd-6th
Hello everyone,
I apologize for not updating you last week. It completely slipped my mind. The concert practice took up most of our time and I am so happy with the effort your child put into the performance. They did an amazing job and the new sound system really helped get their voices out to the audience! Next week we will continue to work on Unit 6 in Fundations. You can help by practicing the trick words at home. We have learned that when there is more than one object, we write the base word and add a suffix, s. One ship is written as ship but two are written as ships. We will continue to write in our gratitude journal and on our new nonfiction topic, owls. Reading groups are going great! I am very impressed with their progress with decodable text. This group loves to read! On Friday I ask that your child bring in an object that they know a lot of information about and that they can teach us 3 things. For example, I may bring in a muffin and the recipe to teach them how to bake. Or I may bring in my yoga mat and teach them 3 new poses. Be creative!

January 19th-23rd
Hello everyone,
This week the class had an extra focus on social emotional/social studies learning. There were some big feelings in the 1D and we spoke about and practiced ways to calm our bodies when big feelings take over. A few examples of big feeling are excitement, silly, sadness or frustration. These are all normal feelings all people have, but we need to understand that how we react when feeling this way can impact ourselves and people around us. Your little people made great suggestions! A few examples were that we can practice breathing techniques, counting, walking in nature, positive self-talk, movement break/yoga and voicing that we need a break is a great first step in calming ourselves.
Next week in Fundations we will start Unit 6. The focus is on base word and adding suffix s. For example, shops/bugs. We will learn that suffix s can sound like /s/ or /z/. There are 8 new trick words to learn. Please look for them under the Fundations tab. In math we will continue to practice addition and begin subtraction. In writing we will continue with nonfiction and gratitude journals. Learning about Koalas is a big hit! If you would like to practice reading at home, please email me to request books be sent home. There were several books lost before Christmas so I will only send them home if it is requested. Our concert date is moving ever closer and the excitement is growing! Practice will take place in the classroom and music room next week. Our schedule may be impacted by the excitement and time it takes to practice. There will be extra movement and calming breaks to help everyone develop skills needed to regulate emotions before they become too big. I hope you all have a great weekend!

January 12th-16th
Hello everyone,
Our first week back has been full of adventure, learning and love. The class demonstrated compassion and concern for their peer who was injured by creating cards, pictures and crafting gifts. Hugs and cuddles will follow! This is a very caring group of little people and that is because you, their family, have taught them about caring for others around them. Next week in writing/reading we will begin to explore nonfiction texts and write about what we learn. In math we will be introduced to addition with numbers up to 12 and continue with numbers to 100, counting by groups 2, 5, 10. In social studies we will begin to discuss the environment; how we interact with it, what we can do to care for it and how it can change (weather event, people impact, etc.) In the morning when they arrive, they will do either a busy bin activity or their gratitude journal until we stand for O’Canada. On a final note, on Friday please bring in an artifact of your child interacting with the environment, a story about how your family helps the environment or pictures just enjoying our beautiful Island. Have a great week!

January 5th-9th
Welcome to 2026! Today we had a relaxed start and enjoyed catching up with each other. This week 1D will focus on routines, listening to peers, and gratitude. We have started Unit 4 in Fundations and will focus on glued sounds (am, an, ing, all), bonus letters (f, l, s) and retelling a story. In math we will continue with numbers 50-100. Reading groups will begin tomorrow but we will not be taking books home this week. There were several books lost before the break and I’m trying to solve this problem. On a final note, please ensure that your child is dressed for outdoor play each school day. It is COLD! Have a great week everyone!

December 8th-12th
Hello everyone,
This week the class will begin Unit 4 in Fundations. The focus will be on the bonus letter spelling rule (ff, ll, ss). At the end of a one-syllable word, if the word has one vowel and immediately followed by an f, l, or s at the end, double that consonant. In reading we will continue to read decodable books and phrases in small groups. We will also take home a book each week to share with you, our family. Please return the books each Friday and a new one will go home. These are not decodable books but are good practice for beginners. There is LOTS of school news this month, please read the school newsletter carefully. Below are a few items that will impact our classroom activities. If your child needs skate/helmet for the skating day, please let Ms.Swan or I know no later than Wednesday, December 9th.
Skate Day Schedule
The Skating Schedule for December 12 is as follows:
9:00-9:55 Kindergarten and Grade 1
This year 5A will be once again selling Candy Grams in support of Christmas families. This has become an annual fundraiser for our school. Starting Monday, December 8th, teachers will be selling Candy Grams for $1/each. We will be collecting money all week and delivering Candy Grams on Thursday, December 18th to coincide with our day of Thankful Thursday during Spirit Week.
On a final note. I have been working on the class website to make it more user friendly. There are LOTS of ideas for how you can participate in your child’s learning. I encourage you to have a look and if you have any questions, please let me know. I welcome your feedback.

December 1st-5th
I can’t believe it’s December! We are on our 55th day of school and the class has made great progress! Our Share circles have been a huge hit each morning and we are learning so much about each other. For the month of December, I ask that each Friday your child bring in an object that represents activities that you like to do together as a family. This could be something that represents your culture, a family tradition or something that brings you joy (ex. walking in the woods, riding a bike, playing an instrument). In Foundations next week we will be finishing Unit 3. I encourage you to look at the new Fundations tab for activities that you can do to practice the trick word, glued sounds, cvc words and number words. In math we have started using tally marks to count by 5s and will begin even and odd numbers. Representing numbers 0-20 will remain in our practice and we will begin counting forward/backward with numbers 50-100. Daily reading practice will be done three ways: independently daily, small group and large group practice every other day. In writing, we will continue to practice dictated sentence writing and journal writing. Our journal writing in December will focus on gratitude and people we admire. I hope you all have a great weekend!

November 24th - 28th
Hello everyone,
As most are aware by now, I have been out sick for the last week. I plan to return on Monday, November 24th. I’ve experienced a double ear infection, and my hearing has been impacted. If things are a little rocky on Monday, I will need to be absent a little longer. I’ll keep you updated if this needs to happen. Rescheduling the interviews will happen at some point this week. I’ll email when I have options sorted out for you. Thank you for your understanding and patience, it is greatly appreciated.
Report cards will be sent home on December 4th. Sherwood is moving to reuseable report card envelopes to be environmentally friendly! Please return the envelopes once you have read the report card. The school has also sent out a PBIS survey to your email. The PBIS matrix is a fundamental tool in the classroom that has helped 1D shape and build a community of caring, responsible, and safe learners. We put our best PAWS forward throughout our day with lessons and activities developed using the matrix outcomes. I’ll add an overview for September to December and an example lesson to the site for you to look at. It can be found under the heading, Parnet Information and then Curriculum Overview. If you have any questions, I’m happy to answer them.
Since I am at home writing this update, I don’t have the week’s upcoming lesson goals to share with you. One change I will note in routine is that our Choice time will be moved to the end of the day. As each child enters the room, they will now be responsible for unpacking their communication bag and water bottle, and complete 1-2 play-based sign in activities that will have a focus on reading, writing, math and social studies (or social emotional learning/SEL). There will be a choice of 4-5 activities per day, and they will remain the choice for the week. Have a great week everyone!

November 17th-21st
Hello everyone,
The class has started their preparation for their winter concert! It will be held in January, and I believe the date is on the school calendar. I’ll let you know closer to the date the arrival time and start time. I will send home lines for you to practice sometime in the next week or two once we have a few more things sorted out in class. With all the rain and mud there has been an increasingly large need for extra clothing needed. Unfortunately, our school closet will no longer be available for children who get muddy or wet outside. This clothing is meant for ONLY those who are in need due to a bathroom accident. Please have extra clothing in your child’s bag each day to avoid the discomfort of having to sit in wet/muddy clothing. Our school policy is that we go out rain or shine unless it is pouring down. Wet weather gear is needed at this time of year. It’s also a good idea to have hats and mittens in their bag. Cold weather season has arrived, and we have no extra available at the school.
A note from Mr. Duncan our librarian. It is suggested to use the CTRL + F key on computers to bring up the search bar to look for certain items or series of books on the pdf file that is linked below. Mobile devices have different ways to search depending on the operating system. Not all items that are on the list are at the fair, but if they are on the list, I can order them.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ama18x6Vc8FWi3q6zTzuM0vTiODBf9Zq/view?usp=sharing
Please note, invisible ink pens will not be sold this year and I will not be ordering any. This list will also be available on my library website, https://sherwoodschoollib.blogspot.com/2025/11/below-is-link-to-all-items-available-at.html
1D book fair purchase time is on Monday. You can also view it online and at your interview time.
FYI to all families. The dental clinic is not getting many consent forms filled out online so they are asking that each teacher send the link to parents in an email as a reminder. Here is the link.

1D has officially finished assessments! Next week we will be back to our normal schedule. In math we will begin counting forward/backwards from 50, skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s, and continue with representing numbers in a variety of ways. In Fundations we are learning about glued sounds (am, an, ing) and digraphs (wh, th, sh, ch, ck) and writing dictated sentences and cvc (consonant, vowel, consonant) words. On Friday I ask that the Show ‘n’ Share represent a way that your child/family has contributed to your community in a positive way. An example might be that you planted flowers or a tree, volunteered at an event or participated in a local event for charity. A picture is always welcome if you don’t have an artifact. Even something as small as picking up garbage, or better yet, putting garbage in a bin at a local park instead of on the ground. Do you walk in the woods? Being respectful in nature is a great way to serve your community. Be creative! We are learning so much about each other and the world during our morning Share Circle that I’d like our topics to start carrying over into our Friday Fun Day! Have a great week! I look forward to seeing you all during interviews!

Hello everyone,
The class had a fantastic FUN Wednesday! They all did very well at the Remembrance assembly and created a fantastic drawing of a peacekeeper/solider wearing a poppy during our art time. This drawing and other art projects are added to their art scrapbook. Some go on the wall for display and others are taken home as they are made. We will be finishing up any missed assessments next week. The class and I are looking forward to getting back to our normal routine after this reporting period is over! Please remember to check the online booking for Parent Teacher Conferences as spaces fill up fast. I look forward to meeting with everyone and sharing all the great progress your little person has made so far this year. On Nov.13 the class will view the book fair to create a wish list. On Nov.17th they will have the chance to buy. If you are sending in money please ensure that you write a note on the book(s) you want to purchase. I will not be going with them and there have been times that little people got excited and purchase the wrong item. Enjoy the rest of your week!

November 3rd-5th
Hello everyone,
Next week a green sheet will go home on Monday with important information on how to book your online Parent Teacher interview. If these times don’t work I will do my best to accommodate your needs, but it will be a time after school between 3pm and 4pm. Please let me know as soon as possible. If you need an interpreter for your interview those interviews will be booked at another time, and more information will go home when we know the date. Please do not book online for the 21st or 22nd. A gentle reminder to check the school news for important dates and information. There will be no classes on November 6th,7th,10th,11th and 21st. Next week we will focus on assessments so, if your little says all they did is play please know that this is true, but it is mostly structured play with a learning goal while I work individually. As a reward for playing using cooperation, kindness and being quiet they will have the chance to earn extra choice play as well. They are working hard to show their best work and they know they are working to show you, their family, all they have learned so far in Grade 1. Halloween was an exciting time for 1D!!! I hope you all enjoy the weekend!

October 27th-31st
Hello everyone,
My apologies for being so late posting the update. This week we are learning about communication and all the ways we get our thoughts out. We played a game of Telephone today that was VERY funny! And when I spoke about what a landline phone was the children thought I was making up a story!! I have started to do assessments (check-ins) with your littles. This has been going slowly but very well. In Fundations we are reviewing sentence writing before doing another check-in which will hopefully happen on Thursday, if the excitement in the room isn’t too elevated. On Friday we will have a normal Fun Friday but Halloween themed. Your child is invited to dress in costume but please note, we WILL be getting messy. An old costume may be better to avoid any disappointment if their favorite is damaged. We ask that no weapons or masks come to school. If you would like to send treats, they MUST BE items that are not food. Stickers are always exciting to receive. If food treats come to school, I will send them home. If your family doesn’t celebrate Halloween, please let me know so I can have an alternative art project and game prepared for them. On a final note, the weather is getting colder. Please ensure that your child has warm outdoor clothing each day. We go out rain or shine, unless it is a downpour. Enjoy the rest of your week!

October 20th-24th
Hello everyone,
This week we welcomed a new friend in 1D! Ushindi has joined us and his name has been added to the class list on the site. Next Friday I ask that all Show ‘n’ Share objects come in a bag and that you talk with your child about giving three clues. We are working on describing people, places and things. This helps build language and adds descriptive words to stories and writing. In math we will continue to represent numbers and are now counting to 50. I sent home a word list on Wednesday that your child will need to be introduced to by the end of the year. They may or may not be able to remember them all, and that’s okay. The expectation is that they can read and spell each word on the list. The ‘trick words” don’t follow the normal rules we use for tapping out words and this is why we need to have them stuck in our brain (memorized). Each lesson introduces one to three words a day, but you can do them at home in any order you wish.
The class has been enjoying making art from recycled items. So much that I can’t keep up with demand. If you can help, we would appreciate it! Items you can send in are small boxes, bottle caps, toilet paper tubes, small dishes, string, yarn, and anything else you can think of. On a final note, the class will begin assessments during the coming weeks to prepare for the first reporting period of the year. It may seem early but there are several days in November that we will be away from school. I hope you all have a great weekend!

October 14th-17th
Hello everyone,
Next week we will be discussing gratitude and community. So far we have learned there are many types of communities, such as our school community and where we live. To connect the concept of togetherness and cooperation within community, we will read Stone Soup and make our own soup from a stone. I will send home one ingredient that your child will bring to add to the soup. I ask that each item is cut up in small pieces and placed in a dish or a bag. If you are using canned items, please open it at home and put it in a dish/bag. The soup will not be ready until around 1:30-2 and it will be their choice if they want to sample it. In math we will continue to work on numbers to 40 but represent numbers to 20. We are also beginning to learn about place value, hundreds, tens and ones but mostly focused on tens and ones. In writing we have begun to use the word wall. I will send home a list of words that will need to be memorized. We practice this as part of Fundations but it takes time to read and then spell words from memory. There are many fun games that you can play at home to help. Reading groups have started and are going well. Each group time we rhyme, review trick words and practice a decodable book. The class is VERY excited to read! A gentle reminder that our pumpkin trip will be on Wednesday, October 15th. I hope you all have a great weekend!

October 6th-10th
Next week the class will be discussing community/country. We’ll learn about community helpers, different kinds of community (groups) and a little about PEI/Canada. We will also decorate flags from the country we were born in. If your child was born outside of Canada or you yourself were, please let me know so I can get a flag ready for them. These flags will be added to our All About Me display wall. In Fundations we will start Unit 2 and really focus in on tapping out the sounds. I sent home an information sheet on our math activities (representing number to 20). It also gives you great ideas to practice at home. A gentle reminder that Friday is a PD day. Show ‘n’ Share on Thursday will be a teddy bear and pajamas. The class asked for a teddy bear clinic and that’s what we’ll do. It will be up to them to organize and I’m sure there will be amazing stories created! I ask that your child is dressed in boots/clothing appropriate for the weather for the farm visit on Wednesday. Form and payment must come in on Monday. On a final note, library books are not coming back when they should. Day 3 is book return and Day 4 is Library visit. If your child has several books home, they will not be able to take more home. Monday is Day 4. Have a wonderful weekend!
Almost forgot, if you have not sent in a photo no larger than 4x6 of a group/family that your child belongs to please do so on Monday. It will be added to the All About Me display.
Food drive items can come in anytime. Even 1 can of soup can help.

September 29th-October 3rd
Hello everyone,
Due to illness, I was away from the classroom last week. The class had a fun few days! This week we have picked new table partners to work alongside, discussed Truth and Reconciliation/Orange Shirt Day and ended the review portion in Fundations. In writing we will write about belonging to groups (community, culture, sport, family, etc.). I ask that you bring in a small photo no larger than 4x6 of your child of one of their groups. It can be printed in black and white on paper and does not have to be on photo paper. This photo will remain at school and be stapled to a display in our classroom. If you need help printing a photo, send me one and I’ll print it for you. This should be in by Thursday, October 2nd. In math we will begin working on numbers 11-20 representing numbers, and counting 0-30. Reading groups are slowly rolling out! We have started to set the routine, and I will be able to read with most groups each day. The children are excited! We love to read in 1D!
A few dates:
November 30th No school
October 1st-8th Food Drive (1 can of beans makes a big difference)
October 8th Field Trip (MacKenzie Farm-permission form and money due Oct.6th) Forms will go home soon.
Have a great week!

September 22nd-26th
Hello everyone,
Another fantastic week in 1D! Next week we will begin talking about Terry Fox in Phys.Ed and in the classroom. The school wide walk will take place Thursday. In math we will begin counting 1-25 forward and backwards, continue representing numbers in a variety of ways, subitizing and printing numbers/words. In writing we will begin to review printing a sentence and adding details to our pictures. In Fundations we are still reviewing the letters, tapping out words, story comprehension and rhyming. On Fun Friday I ask that you put your child’s choice for sharing in a bag. We will describe it to our peers and they will have to guess what is in the bag. This is a great activity to use descriptive words to build our language skills.
A special thank you to all families who came to visit me on Meet the Teacher night! It was lovely to meet you all. A gentle reminder to check the school news for upcoming events. I believe there is a BBQ happening soon!
Have a great weekend!

Hello everyone,
Week two was fantastic! 1D is following routines and learning how to be great friends. Next week we will continue with a review of letter names/sounds, tapping out words and story comprehension. In math we will now practice counting forward/backward 0-20 and continue to review subitizing, representing numbers to 20 and begin learning number words. In writing we will begin writing short sentences to add to our drawings. An example might be the following, I like pizza. Although homework is not expected at this time, I do encourage you to work on reading, writing, math and spelling words at home. The joy of having a little is that homework can be a game or art. Card making is a great way to spread kindness and practice printing/spelling skills. A memory game or matching game for learning to read trick words is also fun to play. They LOVE to play teacher and by them teaching you they are using different areas of their brain to recall and then explain the task. This helps them learn and is also fun!
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. I’m here to help and I can’t do that if I’m not aware. Emails are great, but I do ask that you write in the communication book so that if there is a substitute, they will be able to know how to help your little. I will not check emails when I am not at school. A gentle reminder that you need to check the school news for upcoming events that are school wide. Weekly updates from me will only include items that involve curriculum or special classroom events. This will be the last email update. Next week I will only post on the classroom site.
Have a great weekend!

Welcome Families,
Welcome to 1D! This year we are reducing the amount of paper going home by having an individual blog for each classroom. Please visit the school website, sherwood.edu.pe.ca/, and under the Learning Resources heading you will find Teacher Blogs, simply click on Ms.Macintyre and it will take you right to my blog. Each Friday I will post a brief update on curriculum goals for the following week and other communications you will need to support your little person. The site is user friendly on smartphones, laptops and tablets!
A few things to ensure you do during these first few days of school:
Return all forms signed by Monday, September 8th (read carefully, write your child's name one each and sign your name in all places)
Check the school website sherwood.edu.pe.ca/
Check our class blog, 1D Ms.MacIntyre
Please keep the communication scribbler/notebook in the homework bag. When you write a note, please date it at the top of the page and keep the book open to that page. I will not look at any closed books. Also, it’s very important that your little person knows they have the responsibility to give me notes each morning. As time goes on I will not check each bag and it will be up to them to give me notes.
Please have a filled water bottle each day and heat lunches at home. We do not have access to a microwave.
