6th grade is a wonderful year for string students. They are able to spend significantly more time playing their instruments during the school day than in elementary school. We have large group practices twice a week during the study period (not before or after school). Small group lessons take place once a week for an entire period.
During this year the students increase their knowledge of notes and learn different ways to use the bow. They are able to achieve a wider range of expression, play more complex music and develop the teamwork and listening skills needed to be part of a large group.
Performance opportunities include the Holiday and Spring concerts at CCMS and the All-City Concert in March at Clifton High School.
I have taught 6th grade strings for nearly 10 years in Clifton and it remains exciting for me to witness how much progress they make.
About Our Director
Effie Yuen is the 6th grade strings teacher at both CCMS & WWMS. She first started to play the violin when she was in 4th grade in public school in Maryland. Since that time she studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music and Manhattan School of Music, performed with many orchestras and chamber music groups, and has taught countless students. She has been happily sharing her love of music with the students of Clifton since 2006.
