NJSLS - Math

These are the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Mathematics, for all grades. Feel free to look through them. Below you will also find my interpretations of the standards for 3rd through 6th grade, in easy to understand statement form. I wrote them as an easy way to prepare for the NJSLA tests that take place at the end of the academic school year.

What you see above is the two accepted hierarchies for quadrilaterals. As you can see, in the first definition, the chart on the left, Parallelograms ARE NOT considered Trapezoids. In the second definition, the chart on the right, Parallelograms ARE considered Trapezoids. Why is this? There is an ongoing debate in the math community as to whether parallelograms are or are not trapezoids and it all hinges on a few words. The definition of a Trapezoid is either 1 - a quadrilateral with one pair of parallel sides OR 2 - a quadrilateral with at least 1 pair of parallel sides. Notice the subtle difference? See? Words matter, even in math! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
