SAT & ACT and Fee Waivers
SAT and ACT
In February 2024, the UNC Board of Governors recently adopted a time-limited policy provision (through Fall 2025) that outlines the minimum eligibility requirements for admissions consideration:
To be eligible for review by any of the 16 UNC System universities, a student must:
earn at least a 2.5 weighted high school GPA
OR
score a minimum SAT of 1010 or ACT composite of 19
Writing Scores are not required for NC colleges and universities.
Most NC independent colleges and universities will follow the same plan regarding admission criteria through Fall 2025.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
NC Community colleges, such as Cleveland Community College, never require SAT or ACT scores for admission.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
ACT and SAT will only give account information directly to the student.
SAT: www.collegeboard.org
ACT: www.act.org/student
Students who do NOT have an account will need to create one. Students will log in and create a profile, then select which test date/location they need. Those dates and locations are on the SAT/ACT website.
A note about creating your MyACT account:
All juniors take the ACT at school in the Spring. If students wish to retake it, they will need the ACT ID number off the top of their score report. These reports were mailed to the address students provided and come directly from ACT. If students are unable to find their score report, email or come see Mrs. Murray.
Steps:
Go to www.act.org
Click Register for the ACT Test: U.S.
Click Create US Account
Answer the following questions:
Have you registered for the ACT before: NO
Have you taken the ACT before: YES (if you took it here with us at school)
You will be prompted to enter your ACT ID number which is at the top of the score report you received in your email.
If you have already created a MyACT account and your previous account information does not appear after login, it is possible a new account was created in error or there was an error in migration. If you do experience this issue, contact ACT for agent assistance in merging accounts.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Many college application deadlines will be no later than December/January, so any senior needing SAT or ACT scores need to plan accordingly.
SAT and ACT Fee Waivers
Fee waivers are available for 11th and 12th grade students
Eligible students may receive up to two fee waivers for the SAT (just one code is needed) and four for the ACT.
Students may request an SAT fee waiver directly from College Board.
To obtain an SAT and/or ACT fee waiver from SHS, students must complete the Lunch Application and qualify or be a TRiO member. Because a student’s lunch status is confidential, a signed Share Form (printed form available in Student Services) giving permission to verify your eligibility is required. Once eligibility is determined, students will be given a fee waiver.
ACT
The ACT measures skills in English, math, reading, and science reasoning. You'll receive a score on each section and a composite score between 1 and 36. The ACT is offered during the school day for free to juniors at NC public high schools. Otherwise, the ACT costs $68 (without writing).
