Why Are We Here?
Shelby High School Theatre Department is dedicated to producing high quality plays, musicals, and other performances that challenge, entertain, and enrich. We also strive to produce highly-trained graduates who will be leaders in the college theatre and community theatre world.
Shelby High Theatre believes quality theatre and the training to achieve it are possible for anyone in any community and are vital part of any complete education.
What Do We Do?
General - Shelby High School Theatre Department makes its home in Malcolm Brown Auditorium on the campus of Shelby High School in Shelby, North Carolina. It runs a 4-5 show season that includes one spring musical and several one-acts and a straight show. The Shelby High School Theatre Department employs a theatre teacher and an auditorium manager who teaches a few acting classes. The department is a past winner of the State High School Play Festival in 1997, 2006, and 1009 and regular participant in the regional Blumey Awards. The season break-down for the department is listed below.
NCTC Play Festival Participation - The department produces two one-act shows that are performed at the annual North Carolina Theater Conference High School Play Festival. SHS Theatre has advanced to the State Play Festival numerous times and has won it three times since 1998.
NCTC Play Festival Hosting - In 1997, the SHS Theatre Depatrment became one of the first high schools to host the High School Play Festival in and was a regular host each year before taking a break in 2008.
Musical - Every year there are school-wide open auditions for an inter-departmental musical.
Spring Play - Each spring, there is one open-audition non-musical play or two student-directed one-acts.
International Thespian Society - We are home to ITS Troupe #1727, originally chartered on January 1, 1991. The troupe as reactivated in 2018 and recently hosted representatives from all four Cleveland County high school theatre departments in a Fun Day to decompress during exams.
