Industrial zoning with lax planning rules over the past 50 years, along with rapid increased urbanisation have led to the untenable situation where environmental and human health is put at risk. This is primarily due to huge amounts of industrial contaminants discharging by air right next to our schools, sports-fields and residential areas.

It is in Mount Maunganui's best interest for specific heavy industry to relocate to a fit-for-purpose zone away from residential areas, or ensure state of the air equipment is used to mitigate pollution. The significant effect air pollution has on our health is extremely detrimental - united as a community we can demand better.

For generations, Mana Whenua at Whareroa Marae has been systematically ring-fenced by heavy industry, exposing them to high levels of harmful chemicals on an on-going bases. As an integral part of the fabric of the Mount Community, we stand united with them in their plight for clean air, water and soil.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS OF MOUNT INDUSTRIAL AREA AS IT IS CURRENTLY ZONED
Industry and Councils talk about the financial benefits to our area but few talk about all of the costs that are borne by residents. The cost of pollution, congestion, monitoring and enforcement of these industries. The costs on our health and well-being. In addition, the huge opportunity cost of having 270 Hectares of land in the centre Tauranga taken up by endless amounts of logs, containers and heavy industry better suited for fit for purpose sites away from communities. Recognising the contribution of these industries whilst questioning whether this is still the best use of all that land is a worthwhile exercise.
