"SNL" Sketch
Anonymous
Synopsis: On the outside, the audience of popular television show “Joy of Painting” believes that its celebrity, Bob Ross, is a painting prodigy. However, on the other side of the camera, producers must keep it a secret that his paintings aren’t quite as reputable.
{Opens in the painting and filming studio of Bob Ross}
Bob Ross:
Hello everyone, and welcome to another wonderful night of “The Joys of Painting.” Tonight, how about we start off with a little school quad, some happy little trees, and then create some happy mountains in the back for them?
{Cuts to Bob Ross filling up the painters tray with paint. He holds the tray at an angle, and the colors start to run together. He doesn’t notice.}
Bob:
Alright, first, let’s make some pretty blue sky for this background. Let’s use this color here (gestures to the swirl of colors filling up the palette), “Sap Green”
{Behind the camera, the producers flail a cue card that reads “Blue,” but it goes unnoticed”}
Bob:
Now, I like to just…feel out the painting. A few trees here, some grass there, maybe a bird or rabbit here and there…
{Bob trails off, completely oblivious to the fact that his painting is that of a toddler’s style. The cast and crew are rolling their eyes and trying to redirect him, but this is nothing new to the set.}
Bob:
This next part is my favorite. I kind of like to just..blend..a little bit…here…and here too…
{Bob begins to run his brush through the sky, and for a moment it almost looks passable as a legitimate painting. Then, to the horror of the cast, he sets down his brush and begins to spread the colors with his fingers like a preschooler.}
Bob:
Sometimes, I like to just go with the flow. Art is all about doing what comes naturally.
Producer #1:
He’d better pull out that “happy accident” line, and soon.
Producer #2:
{Weary} Couldn’t agree more
{Pan back to Bob Ross and his abomination of “art,” paint all over his fingers and beginning to trail down his sleeve}
Bob:
Thank you so much for watching, kind folks at home. I hope you enjoyed this lovely time I got to spend with you all. Have a wonderful evening, and thank you for your time.
{Producers groan and grumble about another horrible episode to cut and edit.}
Producer #1
{Exasperated} That’s a wrap.
