Dear 3B Parents,
Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope you were all able to have a restful and enjoyable time with your children.
As the weather is slowly warming up, our school's field has become very muddy and slushy. Students are encouraged to bring splash pants or sweatpants to wear over their uniform pants and a light jacket or hoodie to wear over their shirts when playing outside, as well as appropriate footwear. Furthermore, students who are prone to getting muddy should always have an extra change of clothes. Thank you for sending your children to school prepared for the muck and the mire!

English Language Arts
This week, we are starting of our final novel study of the year on Prince Caspian by C. S. Lewis. Students will explore the themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the power of trust throughout the book while following the adventures of the four Pevensie siblings.
We are nearly done practicing all the uppercase letters in cursive, and students will soon be given the opportunity to practice their cursive writing through various passages of poetry and prose. We are also beginning our final unit of grammar on verbs and adverbs. Finally, students have finished learning the poems "Bee, I'm Expecting You!" and "A Spring Morning" by Meng Haoran. Our next poem will be "The Tyger" by William Blake.
Math
We have just concluded Ch. 9, and will be moving on to explore fractions more in-depth in Ch. 10. Students have learned how to compare fractions with either the same numerator or denominator, as well as how to write fractions on a number line. Many students should continue to practice these skills as we move to Ch. 10, which will focus on finding equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions.
Students should continue memorizing and working towards mastery of all multiplication tables from 1-10.
Here is a link to Singapore Math's Letter Home for parents for Chapter 9 and Chapter 10. These letters include notes on the main concepts students are learning and ideas for activities to extend skill practice at home.
We also now have access to the Gr. 3 Singapore Math videos. The *new* login information is as follows:

Students have finished learning about the Medieval Period (476-1453 A.D.) and will now be moving on to study the Renaissance and Age of Exploration.
Before Spring Break, students learned about the turmoil in Europe, and particularly in England and France, throughout the Hundred Years' War, the Black Death, and the Crusades. We also read about the Fall of Constantinople, marking what is usually seen as the end of the Medieval period and the influence of the Roman Empire.
We will now turn to study the art, architecture, and innovation of the European Renaissance, the House of Tudor in England, and the early exploration of North America over the coming weeks.
Science
Students have continued studying the Earth Systems strand of Gr. 3 Science.
Students learned about various types of natural events that can change Earth's surface, both those that occur over a short period of time, as well as those that take much longer. Students also explored various natural events that have taken place in Alberta, including the Frank Slide.
For the remainder of the unit, students are studying the layers of the Earth, various types of dinosaurs that have been found in Alberta, and layers found within the soil. To start them off, students were able to explore a variety of real and replica fossils from the Royal Alberta Museum's collection in our own classroom!
