Students will learn how the Mongols were a nomadic, tribal people living on the steppe lands northwest of China and horses were an essential part of the Mongol lifestyle. They will understand strong loyalty to kinship groups made it difficult for the Mongols to unify and organize a stable society. Students will understand the Mongol economy depended on herds of animals and on raiding other tribes or neighboring communities for goods. Students will also be able to demonstrate learning through written responses to the framing question, text-based questions, and a scenario at the end of the lesson.
Students will know the meaning of legacy and what actions were taken by the Mongol leaders, they will understand different factors contribute to the evaluation of the Mongols, and they will be able to complete a mind map and write a final response explaining what legacy the Mongols left.
