Three sections of the gradebook: Rehearsal Skills/Practice, Daily Assignments, Playing Check/Concert
**All grades will be input on synergy. Though we will post some assignments in google classroom, there are many times when synergy doesn't accurately connect. For the most accurate portrayal of your overall grade and missing assignments, GO TO SYNERGY. :)
Participation is an inherent part of achieving goals in orchestra. Even if you are having a bad day, you are expected to play your instrument and give your best effort to learn the objective of the day. If you come in to class, have your materials, and put in effort every day, these are essentially free points. :)
You receive 10 points per week for rehearsal technique. (5 for your small group lesson and 5 for after school orchestra) You lose points for the following:
Tardiness- In your seat, with your instrument/materials by lesson start time. If I have to call your room for you, you lose 2 points. Mr. Hegert calls at 8:19 for 1st period and 12:33 for 5th period. :) Lose 1 point.
Behavior- Mr. Hegert will give you a small redirect as a warning. Each following reminder for the same/similar action will result in loss of point.
An out of class movement means you have missed the lesson for a given day, and will result in all 5 points lost.
Refusal to participate in a daily assignment completed during class (turning in an incomplete assignment still demonstrates that you put in effort) will result in a loss of all 5 points.
Forgetting your instrument result in a loss of 2 points, as long as you participate as instructed without the instrument.
Working on non-orchestra classwork during orchestra class time (unless you specifically get permission) results in a loss of all 5 points.
All excused absences will not count against your grade, they will be marked excused in synergy and not affect your grade either way.
Students in orchestra are expected to practice their instrument outside of school time each week. Typically, students will practice multiple times each week in chunks of 20-40 minutes to reach the required minutes. If students are unable to accomplish this task, you may discuss alternatives with Mr. Hegert directly.
See the practice page for this website to learn more.
Daily assignments will be separated into 2 sub-categories.
Written Assignments: These assignments will be given during class time. You will be given enough time to complete the assignment during class time in most instances. If asked to complete as homework, Mr. Hegert will allow you to count your time in your practice minutes. Most of these assignments will be worth 5 points, depending on the effort required.
Cross-curriculum assignments- math, science, english, social studies driven assignments to help us build connections between our music and the world around us.
Music Theory Assignments- Assignments demonstrating knowledge of terms, symbols, or the music we are learning.
Checkpoints: These mini-playing checks will happen during class time, in person in a variety of formats. These checks will be worth 5 points. You will complete a checkpoints every 3-4 weeks during your small group lesson.
Song from book
Scale Checks
Rhythm Checks
Small excerpt checks (play measures 3 and 4 of __________ tomorrow)
Posture Checks
Shifting Checks
All unit assessments will be worth 25 points. This is because they require more effort from you, and will take place outside of school.
Playing Checks: Once each semester, you will be assigned a series of excerpts (small chunks of your music) and a technical example (a scale, rhythm, or exercise) to play for Mr. Hegert.
You will practice your spots ahead of time so you are ready to go.
You will record yourself playing the excerpts and technical example using your chromebook. You will upload those recordings to google classroom.
Your grade will be based on the effort you put into the details of your music, and your overall improvement since the last playing check.
You will receive a 5 point deduction in the grade book for each of the following.
Use of class time to complete recording (unless given permission BEFORE the due date).
Camera angle does not demonstrate your posture (correct angle will be shown in class)
Concerts: All concerts will be worth 25 points in the grade book. Please see the "concerts" tab on this website for a list of concert dates and times.
Points- Concert grades will be based on the completion of a concert reflection in class the days after the concert. You may lose points by:
Unacceptable behavior at concert. On stage, or in audience. Penalty-5 points
Incomplete answers on reflection assignment. Penalty-5 points per question
Excused Absence. Penalty-25 points. May be made up through alternate assignment #1
Unexcused Absence. Penalty- 25 points. May be made up through alternate assignment #2.
