Lesson Objectives...
Integrate scientific information about the inputs and outputs of decomposers.
Communicate information to demonstrate how matter and energy is transferred between producers, consumers, and decomposers.
Watch the time-lapse videos to figure out what happens when things that do not get eaten. Record your observations in your notice / wonder chart.
Analyze the images of the bread. What did you notice? What are you wondering about? Record your observations and analysis in your science notebook.
Read the article Organisms that Use Food That Doesn't Get Eaten. How does that help use figure out what happens to food that isn't eaten?
The decomposers we investigated take in oxygen and food molecules and give off carbon dioxide and water (cellular respiration).
Decomposers recycle dead plant and animal matter and transfer some energy back into the system.
Decomposers use matter for food that humans (and many animals) cannot use for energy and matter.
