Dr. Henry Louis Gates visited TCL

Dr. Henry Louis Gates hosted a sold-out screening of the new PBS series, "Reconstruction: America After the Civil War" at the Technical College of the Low Country. Part of the series was filmed in Beaufort which played a critical role in Reconstruction (1865-1877) and which is home to the new Reconstruction Era National Historic Park.

During the discussion, Dr. Gates shared that he was motivated to do the series by the tragedy at Mother Emanuel AME in Charleston. Specifically, he saw clear parallels between the rationales given by Dylan Roof for the killing of Rep. Clementa Pinckney and his fellow church members with the justifications and strategies deployed by some Southern Whites to undermine the achievements of African-Americans during Reconstruction -- including the use of terrorism and lethal violence.
