First Grade Language Arts Standards


Literacy: We will use the benchmark curriculum to explicitly teach students the foundational skills
that are neccessary for proficient readers.   

Unit 1

  • Match spoken word to written word

  • Punctuation: periods, exclamation marks, question marks

  • Text features

  • Recognize and produce rhyme

  • Phoneme categorization, blending, segmentation, and manipulation

  • Short a, short i, and short o (sounds in words), digraph ck,
    and double final consonants

  • Common and proper nouns, plural nouns

  • Fluency: phrasing, intonation, and expression

  • Asking questions

  • Reread to clarify or confirm understanding

  • Identify the main topic and retell key details

  • Describe the connection between 2 individuals, events, ideas, or
