I believe:

As a teacher, I believe it is important to share my passion of graphic design with my students. Students tend to respond in a positive way when they have a teacher who loves the subject they teach. The enthusiasm can be contagious. Sharing my passion can help ignite their passion and love for graphic design. When students join my class, they do not need to have any formal art training (although it helps), but I want every student to know that everyone has a creative side, sometimes we just need to dig for it.

The technology we use as graphic designers changes rapidly and on a regular basis. It is important for students to learn how to teach themselves when these changes occur. Some of the best lessons that have come out of my classroom have been by students who have taught themselves something and that have taught me something new. In my class they will learn how to find resources to help them teach themselves. This is something that will stick with them when they are long gone from my class.

The history of graphic design is just as important as what is going on in today's rapidly changing world. If we don’t know the where, how, when and why something began, it’s difficult to develop it into something new. I don’t want my students to get stuck in a place where they only thing they know is the present. I want them to understand where their influence came from.

Building relationships in this class is something I look forward to every year. By understanding each student’s needs I am able to teach them in the way that they can understand. Every student learns differently and at a different pace, I understand this. It helps me to modify assignments to help fit how they learn and how they see the world. Encourage your student to reach out for help if they are struggling.

Students need good communication and interpersonal skills. As a graphic designer they must know how to communicate clearly and effectively in all forms. In this class we learn how to collaborate, how to interview for a job, and how to communicate via email, phone and face to face. We learn soft skills as well as hard skills that are needed for everyday life and job skills.
