Our research – 2025
Civance Research Associates did great work in 2025, building knowledge and practical tools for the sector.
Tania L. Hernández presented her work on cross-border philanthropy between the U.S. and Mexico at the Workshop on Global Philanthropy, held at the University of Basel, Switzerland, in September. This is a collaborative project with Prof. Susan Appe. She was also part of a team of scholars who studied the accessibility of nonprofit data in Latin American countries. Their work was published in the Journal of Nonprofit Innovation (see English version here, Spanish version here).
Mark A. Hager participated in the West Coast Nonprofit Data Conference, where he presented two projects on nonprofit theory and data, conducted with Tania Hernandez and colleagues from University of Maryland. He also took part in a number of academic events in China, sharing his experience and views on the publication process, and presenting preliminary work on the use of technology in the voluntary sector. Mark authored a book chapter on founder syndrome in arts nonprofits, for the edited volume Case Studies on Nonprofit Resilience Management, led by E.A.M. Searing and D.R. Young.
Lina Ochoa participated in the Workshop on Global Philanthropy, at the University of Basel, Switzerland, in September. Her work offers some ideas to rethink Social Impact Bonds, and is inspired in her learnings about the experience of a Colombian organization with impact investment in philanthropy. She also took part in the 12th Conference of the European Research Network on Philanthropy – ERNOP, at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, where she presented a paper on the links between philanthropy, democracy, and funders’ strategies in times of crisis.
Patsy Kraeger signed a book contract as Lead Editor with Routledge on Community Philanthropy. The book includes articles from philanthropic foundation practitioners and academics. She also signed a contract for the completed chapter on Community Benefit Organizations with Kristina Patterson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Georgia Southern University, in the third edition of Introduction to Community Development. Both are forthcoming in 2026.
