PE in KS1

PE in Key stage 1 is delivered through the Enfield PE schemes of work. These plans align with the national curriculum expectations. Pupils develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident in accessing a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination- individually and with others.

They engage in competitive and co-operative physical activities in a range of increasingly challenging situations. Pupils are taught to master basic movements including: running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing their balance, agility and co-ordination. They begin to apply these skills in a range of activities and team games. They have opportunities to develop their understanding of tactics for attacking and defending and have opportunities to perform dances using simple movement patterns.

The NHS recommends that children need 60 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity a day . Moderate intensity activities will raise your heart rate, and make you breathe faster and feel warmer. One way to tell if you're working at a moderate intensity level is if you can still talk, but not sing.

Examples of moderate intensity activities:

  • walking to school

  • playground activities

  • riding a scooter

  • skateboarding

  • rollerblading

  • walking the dog

  • cycling on level ground or ground with few hills
