This course closely follows the Common Core curriculum, including an emphasis on formal two-column geometry proofs. In addition to two-column proofs, topics covered include: family of quadrilaterals, properties of geometric figures, geometric constructions, and transformations. A graphing calculator is strongly recommended. This course culminates with the CC Geometry Regents Exam in June.
Geometry is unique in the high school mathematics sequence as its the only course grounded in logic and proof. Students, being new to mathematics presented in an proof-based format, will be challenged daily and mistakes will be frequent. Some students who may have rarely struggled with mathematics may "hit a wall," here. It is in these mistakes, and occasional frustration, where great mathematical progress will be made. I will Shepard our students through these feelings and push them to new mathematical capabilities. Mistakes will be celebrated as a measure of progress, not as an admonishment of not being successful. In this course, written assessments will be frequent and appropriately challenging.
