Face Mask Challenge:

Tyler's No sew, Soft cloth t-shirt, comfortable tie around your head, there is an opening for a filter.

Advantages: Free, recycled, repurposed, easily slides on and off your head.

Disadvantages: N/A

Ethan's Ear Saver Mask

Instead of the string around your ears you wear an elastic headband around your head. Multiple buttons sewed on the sides of the mask can hook around the buttons and NOT your ears.

To make this you need an elastic headband, thread, a needle and 4 or 2 buttons. Take the band and place it on your head, using a marker mark the locations where the buttons will be sewn close to the ear location. Use the needle and thread to sew at least 2 buttons on one side of the band then do the same on the opposite side of the band then put it around the top of your head then attach the side strings of the mask to one of the buttons on each side if you used for buttons then you can adjust your mask to be tighter. (i used 4 buttons)

Advantages: Reusable / Multiple connections for adjustment / helps keep sweat from brow / comfortable

Disadvantages: The headband is cloth and needs to be cleaned very often. It can be washed in the washing machine.

3 Options

Theresa's 3 Options

ribbon - melt the ends and put on the snaps.

Advantages - easy to put on comfortable, washable, adjustable

Disadvantages - not everyone has snaps and ribbons.

Velcro on ribbon (or cable tie) I cut ribbon, - put self sticking velcro

Advantages - easy to put on, washable, comfortable, easy to make, visually appealing, cable ties are available in stores, adjustable

pipe cleaner - cut in half and folded ends

Advantages - easy to put on, cheap, simple, available ,adjustable ,comfy can make into heart shape

Liam's Facemask Ear Saver

Spencer' Rubber Band and Pencil Solution

TWO rubber bands, ONE pencil and ONE mask. Put rubber band half way through the hole in between the elastic and loop or fold it against the elastic strips. Do that on both sides. Next, slide your pencil through the folded rubber bands on both sides. Finally, put it on your head. Slide your head through the opening between the pencil and the mask.

Advantages: it does not hurt your ears and is VERY easy to make and use. Very cheap if not, free.

Disadvantages: Not adjustable. You have to be delicate and careful making this mask.

John's Solution- popsicle stick. Draw a centerline on popsicle stick. Mark and carve out triangle notches. Cut triangles out carefully and do not cross center line. Color and design. Make a loop in your ear elastic and latch onto notches on stick behind head.

Advantages- Simple to construct, Inexpensive, Easy to modify with notches for size, Easy to modify for looks, Multiple notches to adjust - a child can use an adult mask to fit, Very comfortable, Light, Anytime you need another, you get to eat a popsicle (kidding!), Barely feel it

Disadvantages -

  • Not flexible or form fitting

What I did was I put a clip in the back of the cord and attached it to the back of my shirt

Julian's mask solution

Pros, is easy to make, only takes one person to make, is good at stopping germs

Cons make it hard to breathe, can be annoying

Anne Knudson - All you need is a button, felt or other fabric, needle, thread, and face mask. Gather all my materials. Cut a small strip of felt. Looped it through one of the elastics. Next, I sewed the two ends of felt together. Last, I attached the button by sewing it on.

Advantages: Easy to make, cheap, fashionable, washable

Disadvantages: No way to adjust, you need to know how to sew with a needle

Anna's Facemask Ear Saver

I sewed the two elastic straps together.

Advantages: comfortable, easy, fast, very little materials

Disadvantages: non-adjustable

Calvin's Mask

Jake's Ear Saver Solution

Cameron's Ear Saver

Kory's shoelace solution

Rosemary's simple mask

Ally took some old fabric and cut it up using the measurements 15 by 15. I also used stretchy loops that are more comfortable than elastic and folded it. Then I sewed it to stay together.

Advantages: Easy to make, isn’t time consuming, you don’t have to sew

Disadvantages: Won’t work unless you use 15 by 15 otherwise it won’t cover your nose.

Sean used a piece of elastic, larger than the one used on the actual mask, (recommended ¼ inch to 1 inch), and sew ends to the actual mask’s elastic.

Advantages: a piece of cloth works too, relatively quick to make, easy to make, washable

Disadvantages: requires access to a sewing machine or sewing know-how, cannot be adjusted once sewed, so you really have to know your head size.

Georgia's mask uses velcro to keep it closed. A jump ring or a safety pin is what the piece of fabric goes through, and the fabric is attached to the other end of the original elastic. The velcro is then sewed on and the fabric strip can fold onto itself. The elastic doesn’t touch the back of your ears, providing long term comfort. To make the mask adjustable, there are four velcro dots instead of one.

Advantages: Comfortable in the long term, easily adjustable, washable, inexpensive, easy to make.

Disadvantages: Velcro is a little hard to sew on, can get stuck in hair, velcro is needed.

Teo'smask is very easy to make.My mask is a piece of fabric folded in a simple way. I then add elastic headbands and cut them in half. The Headbands are clipped onto the to and bottom of the mask, which goes around your head.

Advantages: Easy to make, costs practically no money, does not need sewing.

Disadvantages: Difficult to take off

Logan's Mask: Bandana and Hairties

Pros:

  • Easy to make

  • cheap

  • ADJUSTABLE

  • Fashionable

  • no pinching or tangles

  • Straps can be easily trasferred to new mask

  • easy to clean

  • durable

Cons:

  • Elastic stretches over time

  • May slip

Quincy : tissue paper on the end of the string.

Advantages : comfortable, cheap and easy to make.

Disadvantages : not adjustable and not that good looking.

Addison. soft T-shirt cut it into 2 rectangles pieces. I then wrapped it around the band and stuffed pillow filling into it to make it fluffy.

Advantages: cheap, it is really comfortable

Disadvantages: Takes a long time, not as pretty as others

Katelyn's mask

Fold a bandana into an strip, and then fold the two sides in, hot glue the edges together, poke four holes in the four different corners, make sure that they don’t go through the whole bandana just the part that is folded in, find two pieces of fabric cut them into two long strips, slide them into the two holes on the top and bottom, make sure that they are equally measured out of the holes, do that on both sides, then hot glue the sides of the bandana together, then tie it around your head.

Advantages: Comfortable to wear, reduces the tension behind your ears, easy to make, adjustable, inexpensive.

I sewed buttons on a baseball cap. I think that it is comfortable and it looks good. You hook the face mask straps on the buttons and not your ears.

Advantages If a doctor's hair is messy it will cover it up, You can wear the hat backwards and forwards

Disadvantages: If you have to take off the hat the mask has to come off the hat and on your ears .

Ann cut a piece of felt into a strip. Then, cut velcro and attached to the straps for adjustability and I sewed on snap buttons. Then sewed a fabric pad onto the back for comfort

Advantages: It’s easy to make, and adjustable, easy to take on and off.

Disadvantages: It may not fit you because it's not elastic. materials are costly

Pros: Comfortable, Easy to make

Cons: Need Glue gun to make, Difficult to put on & take off

Maddie's Mask: Popsicle Stick and Sturdy Paper

Elle McManus - Face Mask Ear Saver Challenge

Vale's Mask: Buttons and Elastic

Beckett - fold fabric a couple times, put a in a shoelace, staple it.

Advantages - the fabric/shoelace is very pleasant/comfortable, it's easy to make, and affordable.

Disadvantages - ties around the bottom of your head It doesn't cover chin.

Clips to the strings to adjust the size.

Pro: tin foil/ aluminum foil is strong and the clips make it even stronger by holding the mask for extra support.

Con: the tin foil/ aluminum foil can feel weird, but you can always fix that.

Lillian's Foil and Clips

Teddy's Materials - pipe cleaner, face mask

Pros - comfortable, can't fall off, can be adjusted

Cons - sharp edge,

Ellie - three rubber bands knotted together attached it to my mask by knotting them together.

Advantages: easy to make, easy to get, comfortable.

Disadvantages: you need a lot of rubber bands

I folded up a piece of fabric, put a shoelace inside so that there were two loops at the end, then I folded the fabric back over the shoelace so that it wouldn't show. Then I stapled the fabric together, as well as to the shoelace so that it wouldn't go out too far. If you need to shorten the summary of the way I made it, you can.

Advantages - it is inexpensive, the shoelace and fabric is comfortable, and it is easy to make.

Disadvantages - you can not adjust it, and if one side comes bigger/looser, then you can not fix it very easily.

Julia's Narwhal mask

I turned my mask inside out because there is a bendy metal bar on the outside and if you put it on the inside it looks better, and you can wrap it around your nose. Then I sewed a picture of a chubby cute narwhal on the new outside and then put it on.

Advantages: Easy to put on and take off, adjustable around nose and mouth

Disadvantages: Not adjustable on ears, you need to be able to sew, might not like the feeling of cold metal (personally I do like it).

Chloe's choices, hard to pick just one.

Phoebe cut 4 holes in each corner of the mask and then tied one line of string across the side knotting it through the hole and another line of string across the other side then tie a slip knot on each side .

Advantages: Easy to adjust, Inexpensive, easy to make, Comfortable

Disadvantages: Your hair can get caught when adjusting the size, Need to know how to tie a slip knot

Grace's Ear Saver Mask

Thomas's Solution

Meena cut a strip of cloth, sewed buttons on it, and sewed that to the mask.

Advantages: comfortable, adjustable, cheap

Disadvantages: needs cloth and buttons, needs someone who can sew, takes time to make

Laila's Hair tie & Buttons

Abby's Mask

2 buttons on the edge of a hair tie that hook onto a mask. Then when you need a mask take the mask and the hair tie (The hair ties would come with the masks) and connect the two mask elastics to each button.

Advantages: Adjustable, cheap, easy to put on in a hurry.

Disadvantages: Hair ties can lose their stretch, masks will run out sooner then hair ties.
