Day 1 of any design challenges during 5th grade class is about experimenting to learn about innovation and design
Day 2 of the challenge incorporates what was learned from the previous class and direct instruction on engineering and science principles.
The 6th grade study of waves produced models and slides for a presentation. Above is an example of a microwave and 2 of the slides used for the 3 minute presentation. Students often just cut and paste full paragraphs into slideshows. Sometimes they don't even read them. Visual presentation and pride are of paramount importance in the Innovation and design Lab.

Below you will see a seismograph with real seismograph paper that was donated several years ago, held onto because, hey, you never know.
New this year is the fixit station. People donate stuff including electronics, small appliances, telescopes, furniture and anything else that is broken. Those who are interested come in during their recess to take things apart and try to fix them. Laptops and computer parts are a favorite.

Once the hole was found, a borrowed air pump restored this bouncy chair. Once the first one was repaired, more suddenly appeared for fixing.
