Grade 5: Science, Social Studies, and English
Driving Question: How do landforms impact society and the ways that we use resources?
The Project:
Students extended their knowledge of natural landforms by creating randomly generate continents/regions. With a never-before-seen land mass to explore, the students unpacked their new continent/region. What lives there? What resources are there? How do people live, work, and play in this new land? How does the geography impact their daily lives, economy, and other areas of life?
Grade 5 tried something new! Our students learned basic paper mechanics, and were asked to use them in creative ways to design a pop-up book that we can share with CET, our library, our classmates, and with real authors!
While the process was different for each group, students were encouraged to lead the way and take charge of their learning. Teachers supported their needs and guided them along their own path to create this amazing new project.
Below is a sample that begins with planning, moves through the design process, and ends in a stunning final product. Note: The final whale was designed and 3D printed. Student fixed the 3D printed whale to the cover for texture.

Then the classes used, or made their own dice, and rolled to determine what types of landforms would make up their continent. This critical step defined their designs and influenced all other aspects of the project.
Students worked, "all hands on deck" taking on jobs or roles to manage the various parts of this project. Some students acted as project coordinators, others were artists, writers, and paper engineers. Working together and bringing individuality to the whole allowed our children to create meaningful expressions of their learning.
Finally, students recorded their books so that we could best share them with readers no matter the location. We also aimed to get meaningful feedback from both peers and experts in the field.
