With a little practice and application, you could easily make paintings like these ones. There is nothing here that could not have been made without the techniques we have learned in class this year.
The only advantages these artists have on you is boldness, confidence and practice. You can get all three attributes yourself by just having a go and sticking with it.
By Colin Davidson (b.1968) Oil on linen, 2016
Born in Yorkshire and raised in Suffolk, Sheeran is one of the most successful musicians in contemporary British popular culture. His musical style is an eclectic blend of acoustic, pop, folk and hip-hop, drawing on diverse influences from Bob Dylan to Eminem. His 2011 debut album, + ('Plus'), and 2014 album x ('Multiply') received international acclaim, with the latter achieving number one in the UK and US charts on release.
He has won Ivor Novello, Brit and Grammy awards. Sheeran began a world tour of his third album, + ('Divide'), in April 2017, which has made history as the fastest-selling album by a male artist.
Davidson is a leading portrait artist based in his native city of Belfast. He has participated in the National Portrait Gallery's BP Portrait Award three times, winning the Visitor's Choice Award in 2012. This is the first painted portrait of Sheeran, representing the musician in a moment of quiet introspection.
Davidson commented that 'there is a youthful aspect to it but also something experienced beyond his years'. The portrait is based on a sitting during which Davidson made around twenty drawings from life and took reference photographs.
DR TIM MORETON LUCY STOPFORD (b. 1907) Oil on canvas
Lucy Stopford undertook foundation studies before gaining a BA in fine art and English at Leeds University, College of Ripon and York St John. Her. work has been seen in group exhibitions in Oxford including the St Hugh's College Festival of Anniversaries.
The portrait is of the artist's friend, Dr Tim Moreton who for many years worked as Registrar at the National Portrait Gallery. Stopford met Moreton when he arranged for her to see a portrait that was not on display, he has gone on to sit for Stopford on several occasions and for the portrait classes that she teaches.
THE MAYOR OF WOOLLAHRA SINEAD DAVIES Oil on canvas
Sinead Davies studied at Byam Shaw School of Art. Davies's work has been seen in numerous exhibitions in the UK and Australia, including at the ICA in London and Parliament House, Sydney. Her work is held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra.
The portrait is of Toni Zeltzer, the Mayor of Woollahra, Sydney NSW. The first sitting took place in the Mayor's office with the following in Davies' studio. The women found they had several things in common. For example, as an art student, Davies had worked on the island of Lesbos, where Zeltzer was born. The palette was chosen to recall the Greek landscape.
SELF-PORTRAIT ROWANNE COWLEY (b,1972) Oil on canvas
Rowanne Cowley undertook a BA (Joint Hons) in visual art and Spanish at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and has also undertaken short courses at Hereford College of Arts. Her work has been seen in several open exhibitions in Shrewsbury and Ludlow and a solo exhibition at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre.
This self-portrait was made as part of a personal project to complete a portrait of each member of Cowley's family in one year. Cowley works as a full-time gardener and so family sittings and painting sessions have to be organised in the evenings or during bad weather around her work schedule.
JOHN JOHN
INIGO SESMA (b.1987] Oil on wooden panel
Inigo Sesma undertook a BFA at the University of Barcelona and an MFA in painting at the University of the Basque Country (EHU), Bilbao with a year's study at the National Academy of Arts of New York. His work has been seen in numerous group exhibitions in Spain and the United States.
The portrait is of the artist's friend, Jon, with whom he has been friends for nine years, and flatmates for two. Sesma wanted to make a portrait of a figure at one with an interior space, in a situation found in daily life. Choosing the kitchen, where they interact the most, enabled the composition to be true to life.
PORTRAIT OF BEYZA MUSTAFA OZEL (b,1961)

Mustafa Ozel graduated from the Department : of Fine Arts at Marmara University, Turkey. His work has been seen in group exhibitions in Turkey, Switzerland, Greece and the UK and in : solo exhibitions in Istanbul, Ankara and Montreal.
The portrait is of Beyza, an artist's model. The artist says: 'I look for certain characteristics in those of whom I make portraits. Having rich colours in the face is of great significance for me as is the effect of catching a fleeting emotion. I decided to make this portrait, as Beyza has these features.'
FRANCESCO ANASTASIA KURAKINA (b. ] 987) OU on canvas
Anastasia Kurakina studied at the Moscow State Academy Art Lyceum and gained an MA in fine art from the Academy of Fine Arts, Rome.
Her work has been seen in group and solo exhibitions in Italy, the UK and Mexico.
The portrait is of Francesco, a friend of the artist, whom she met when they shared student accommodation. Kurakina asked him to pose for her and says: 'He seemed to be the image of a kind of "literature hero". Suffering, pensive, young, eager for knowledge, passionate, creative, talented, promising and shy.'
A RUSSIAN ARTIST IN CHINA BAO HAN (b,1986) Oil on canvas
Bao Han studied at the Ilya Repin State Academy Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, St Petersburg. Her work has been seen in group exhibitions in St Petersburg, Moscow and Beijing.
The portrait is of Ivan, a Russian artist from St. Petersburg. The two artists studied together in Russia, and were close friends and lovers.
However, when Bao Han returned to her native China, the language barrier and cultural differences meant that Ivan could not stay with her and this portrait was painted as a memorial of their time together.
ALEJANDRO ANCA-LUIZA SIRBU (b, 1984) Acrylic on linen
Anca-Luiza Sirbu gained a BFA from the University of Granada where she is currently undertaking a PhD in the same subject. Her • work is held in the collection of the University of Granada and she has participated in several group exhibitions in Spain in venues in Granada, Almeida, Cordoba and Malaga.
The portrait is of the artist's 6-year-old son, Alejandro who had come indoors to the warm after playing outside during the winter. Sirbu says: 'I wanted to express the unique moments of childhood, and in particular of the childhood of my son. Even at a very young age, one is capable of introspective thought.'
EMMA
ANTONY WILLIAMS (b,1964) Egg tempera on board
Antony Williams studied at Farnham College and Portsmouth University. His work has been seen in solo exhibitions in London and Madrid and has been included in the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition on eleven occasions.
Williams was previously selected for the BP Portrait Award in 1995, 1998, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2014, 2015 and his portrait of Amartya Kumar Sen was commissioned for the National Portrait Gallery Collection in 2003.
The portrait is of Emma, a friend of the artist and a professional model. The sittings took place in Williams's studio where, for the last eleven years, Emma has modelled for various paintings and drawings. This was to be the last painting of her to be produced in that studio.
JACK CASPER WHITE (b, 1981 ) Oil on zinc
Casper White gained a BA (Hons) in fine art at Cardiff School of Art and Design followed by an MA in contemporary dialogues, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Lampeter, His work has been seen in group exhibitions in London, Cardiff and Manchester,
The portrait is of the artist's nephew, and is one in a series that White has made, Jack usually adopts a persona when sitting, but on this occasion White wanted the boy to 'be himself', By painting on zinc, the artist hoped that the light would reflect through the transparent paint to give the effect of capturing something fleeting,
CARMEL ANNE BEN-OR (b. 1965) Oil on linen
Anne Ben-Or studied painting and sculpture at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem and at the Jerusalem Studio School founded by Israel Hershberg. Her work has been seen in group and solo exhibitions In Israel, the Netherlands and Germany.
The portrait Is of the artist's daughter, Carrie.
Ben-Or says: 'Carrie is starting her life as a young Independent woman. One can see the positive force I~ her. From a very young age, Carrie knew how to look straight forward, without fear. I was always impressed by this quality. It Is o challenge, as well as of great joy, to trace what radiates from her In pictorial language.'
CARMEN SILVESTRE GOIKOETXEA (b, 1963)

Silvestre Goikoetxea studied at the University of Navarra (figurative masters) and attended the Catedra Francisco de Goya to study with Antonio Lopez. His work has been seen in exhibitions in Barcelona, Madrid and Pamplona.
The portrait is of the artist's mother who visited the artist in his studio on the way to market wearing her usual coat, beret and black gloves, which reminded him of the elegant dress-sense of the past. Goikoetxea asked if she would pose for him, and the work was developed over a series of short sittings.
ANIA ANIA HOBSON (b.1990)

Ania Hobson undertook a degree in fine art at the University of Suffolk followed by short courses at the Prince's Drawing School and. Florence
Academy of Art. Her work has been seen in group exhibitions in the UK and the annual exhibitions of the Society of Women Artists (2015) and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (2016).
This self-portrait was created during a brief period of painters' block. Hobson says: '1 wanted to record the frustration that I felt.
This painting eventually proved to be a way of pulling myself out of this impasse, with the unrealistic angles and perspectives mirroring the feelings ! had at the time.'
